Kumortuli (also spelt Kumartuli, or the archaic spelling Coomartolly) (Bengali: কুমোরটুলি) is a traditionally potters’ quarter in northern Kolkata (previously known as Calcutta), the capital of the east Indian state of West Bengal. By virtue of their artistic productions these potters have moved from obscurity to prominence. This Kolkata neighbourhood, not only supplies clay idols of Hindu gods and goddesses to barowari pujas in Kolkata and its neighbourhoods, but a number of idols are exported. It is one of the seven wonders in Kolkata.
Kumortuli images are generally ordered well in advance and there a few for off-the-shelf sale. Nowadays, Kumortuli’s clientele has extended to America, Europe and Africa, among the Indian communities living there. In 1989, Durga images made out of shola pith by Amarnath Ghosh were flown to Sweden, Australia, Malaysia and Nigeria. The images weighed only three kilograms each and were ideally suited for air travel. In modern times, Statues and replicas made out of Fiberglass are also being produced and exported to various parts of the country and the world.
In 2006, Kumortuli supplied 12,300 clay deities of goddess Durga. This potter's town supplies images to about 90 countries worldwide with new nations joining the list every year.

Preparation for Durga Puja: Unfinished Durga and Ganesh idol in making
Artistes and idol makers from across the country meticulously prepare Durga idols to keep up with the increasing demand.
Artisans say they bring the earth, the essential element to form the goddess’s image, from the Karnaphuli river. An armature made with timber and straw is then layered with mud to give a rough shape. Then another layer of mud is applied on and the work is finalized with intricate and exquisite details. The idols are then dried in the sun. Finally paint, dress, and ornaments complete the idols.
Generally four of Durga’s offspring surround her. They are Lakshmi, goddess of wealth; Saraswati, goddess of knowledge; Kartik, god of beauty and warfare; and Ganesh, ‘siddhidata’ or the god of auspicious beginning of everything good. However, some Durga idols may have 30 to 35 other associate idols if the devotees so want.
Although the workshops make idols for different pujas all year round, they are the busiest during the Durga puja. The work of making Durga’s idol starts in the Bangla month of Baishakh and ends at Ashwin. Each of them earn between 10 to 40 thousand takas based on their skills.
To see the work in progress and enjoy the beauty of the arrayed half-done idols, hundreds of visitors, specially children, visit the small workshops every day. Devotees would bid a tearful farewell to Durga after the puja festival and immerse the idol in river.

Egyptian inspired pandals made for Durga puja
A thematic pandal gate with a huge statue of an Egyptian pharaoh in a sitting position is a part of Durja Puja celebrations.
Durga Puja is widely celebrated in the Indian states of Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Manipur, Odisha, Tripura and West Bengal, where it is a five-day annual holiday. In West Bengal and Tripura, which has a majority of Bengali Hindus, it is the biggest festival of the year. Not only is it the biggest Hindu festival celebrated throughout the state, it is also the most significant socio-cultural event in Bengali Hindu society.
The prominence of Durga Puja increased gradually during the British Raj in Bengal. After the Hindu reformists identified Durga with India, she became an icon for the Indian independence movement. In the first quarter of the 20th century, the tradition of Baroyari or Community Puja was popularised due to this. After independence, Durga Puja became one of the largest celebrated festivals in the whole world.
Durga Puja also includes the worship of Shiva, who is Durga's consort (Durga is an aspect of Goddess Parvati), in addition to Lakshmi, Saraswati with Ganesha and Kartikeya, who are considered to be Durga's children. Worship of mother nature is done, through nine types of plant (called Kala Bou), including a plantain (banana) tree, which represent nine divine forms of Goddess Durga. Modern traditions have come to include the display of decorated pandals and artistically depicted idols (murti) of Durga, exchange of Vijaya greetings and publication of Puja Annuals.

Puravi: Terracotta Horses of Tamil Nadu
The video takes us on a journey of the earth, as it gets molded into the terracotta horse in the hands of the artisans. The terracotta horses are offered to Ayyanar in the event of substantial rains. Ayyanar apart from being the protective deity in the rural landscape of Tamil Nadu also acts as the god of rain. Terracotta horses and the festivities shrouding it is quintessential to the cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu.

Bishnupur mallaraja's durga puja started today/
