Wanganui NZ Durie Hill Elevator 100Years Going Strong
August 2 1919 August 2 2019 100 Years of Serving the community of Wanganui New Zealand.
Recorded August 3 2019 Zena Mabbott was the driver of my ride up and down. It was an exciting ride full of action.
It would have been nice to view the rectifier and the view out of there smoko room window, but it was a great experience.
Thank you all.
ELEVATOR INSIDE A HILL!!! 1919 Elevator, Durie Hill, Whanganui - W/ PIT VIEW!!!
This ELEVATOR is INSIDE OF A HILL!!! This unique Elevator, which happens to be inside of a hill is very unique and quirky. The Elevator was built between 1916 & 1919 and is still going today! This elevator is fitted with a Mercury Arc Rectifier located in the Machine Room which is used to convert the power from AC to DC. Everything on the most part is original apart from the COP (Car Operating Panel) and the hoisting cables (replaced due to wear and tear and old age). This lift shakes quite a bit which makes it very interesting. When first running, the lift ran on the DC tram network, however when the trams stopped running in 1952 they had to fit a MERCURY ARC RECTIFIER which converts AC power to DC power for the lift. You can see it here:
This is the only lift inside a hill in the Southern Hemisphere!
I called this video Durie Hill elevator as that is it's proper name, not Durie Hill lift.
KEEP AN EYE OUT AT THE END OF THE VIDEO - The safety had been bypassed so they could work in the lift pit. We get to see a brief view of the pit and shaft at the end of the video! Thanks for watching!

Please Enter Destination Floor! OTIS Compass Traction Lifts/Elevators @ Aon Centre, Wellington, NZ
Please Enter Destination Floor! These are 4 of the 12 OTIS Compass Traction Lifts/Elevators at Aon Centre in Wellington, New Zealand. These lifts are open to the public for disabled access from ground down into Taste on Willis food court. These are the low rise bank but there is also 2 more banks which I didn't film as there is security. I think the LOP was being glitchy as when I was trying to type in a 2 digit floor is would register as 2 different calls unless I did it really quickly. Took me a while to figure out that the floor I started on was B1 and not just B (This building has more than one basement). This building was formerly the BNZ Centre but is now the Aon Centre.

fire organ June 2002 Durie Hill Tunnel Whanganui, New Zealand
I assembled this simple 8 note fire organ during a residency at the Sarjeant Gallery.I took some high school students into the Durie Hill Tunnel to play it much to the annoyance of the lift operator at the other end.
War Memorial Tower Whanganui New Zealand
Unveiled in 1925, the Durie Hill War Memorial Tower stands adjacent to the smaller Durie Hill Elevator Tower, and for those willing to climb the spiral of another 176 steps, even more impressive views can be seen from the top! The decision to build a war memorial to the fallen was made in 1919 but the location was fiercely debated by the townspeople of the time. This is the tower and memorial built from the first proposal. The alternative was to build a war memorial more central to the town and in the end both projects went ahead. The second memorial is the Cenotaph located in Queen’s Park. Interesting Door Trick! OTIS Traction Lift/Elevator (Mod.) @ Victoria University, Wellington, NZ
Interesting Door Trick! This is the OTIS Traction Lift/Elevator (Mod. Schindler) @ Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand. This lift has a problem with the doors - When you press door open the doors stop and don't re-open - They then close after a few seconds. I think this is a problem with the door open relay - This lift still has it's original OTIS logic. I'd say this was installed in the 70's. With Alex Ellis.
