Durrës, home to the biggest seaport in the country, is located 34 km away from Tirana. It is the most ancient city in Albania, with almost 3,000 years of history. Its foundation dates back to 627 B.C. when the Corinthians and settlers from Corcyra invaded the Illyrian territory of the Taulants. The city is home to many ancient archaeological sites and finds. The most notable tourist attraction in Durrës is the amphitheater of the Roman Emperor Hadrian with 15,000 seats, the second biggest amphitheater in the Balkans .
During the 9th century, a small church with mosaic-covered walls was built nearby. You can also see the bathhouses of the 2nd century A.D. and the nearby Byzantine forum of the 5th-6th century with marble columns. One-third of the original wall of the city castle is still standing, and you can even walk along the same road that Caesar himself once strolled. The Archeological Museum is located in a new building on Taulantia road , one of the most important of its kind and of great interest to visitors. The most renowned archaeological structure found in Durrës is “Bukuroshja e Durrësit,” a mosaic from the 4th century B.C. Today, it is exhibited in the National Historic Museum in Tirana.
The Ethnographic Museum is the house of the historic famous actor Alexander Moissi born near Durres .
The Art Gallery of the city is placed at the main square Iliria .
In addition to its historical value, Durrës is also a beautiful place to take a break, due to its sandy beaches, hotels and urban feel. You will find excellent restaurants and accommodations all along the sea’s edge.

Top things to do in Durres, Albania!
Top things to do in Durres, Albania
For anyone trying to incorporate all three into a short trip, here are my recommendations for all of the best things to do in Durres in just two days…
DAY 1
Start with a coffee at one of the many cafes
The first things you’ll probably notice when visiting any Albanian city is that there’s a thriving cafe culture. No matter what time of day it is, cafe terraces in Durres are always filled with groups of friends, families and individuals enjoying coffee and local pastries.
Get up early, grab a coffee (or maybe a juice if you’re like me and don’t drink coffee) and sit back in the morning sun for a spot of people watching to start your day like a true Albanian.
Mon Cheri is a cute coffee shop in the city centre, or try Mulliri Vjeter for a cosy spot close to the amphitheatre.
Then head to Byrek corner for breakfast
Byrek is a traditional Albanian dish which consists of layers of flakey pastry filled with meat, cheese or spinach. The simple yet tasty dish can be eaten with any meal or simply as a mid-afternoon snack.
I personally found Byrek to be a delicious and filling way to start the day. Plus if you get down early enough you can get the best Byrek in Durres from Byrektore ‘
Check out some other traditional Albanian dishes here.
Wander through the city centre
Explore the main city streets of Durres for a mix of historic buildings and modern shopping areas. Make sure to head to Bulevardi Dyrrah where you can see the old Byzantine Market, the forum and Roman baths, the Town Hall and the impressive Xhamia E Madhe Mosque.
Explore the Amphitheatre of Durres
The Amphitheatre of Durres is located in the centre of the city and dates all the way back to the 2nd century AD. It is the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Balkans, with an original capacity of 20,000 people. The amphitheatre was excavated in 1966 and has since become an iconic part of the city and one of the most popular things to do in Durres for Albanians and foreign tourists alike.
There is a small charge of just €2 to enter.
Sneak a peek at The Albanian College
The Albanian College Durres is one of those colleges which actually makes you want to go back to school! The impressive building looks more like a museum or theatre than a place of education. If the doors are open make sure to sneak a quick peek inside too to see the equally impressive interior.
Stroll past the walls of Durres Castle and spot the Venetian Tower
As you make your way down from the Amphitheatre of Durres to the seafront, make sure to admire the old city walls which make up Durres Castle. The walls were built in the late 5th century and after several repairs throughout history still stand today, making them the city’s most prominent Roman remains.
The main part of Durres Castle is a structure called the Venetian Tower which now homes a trendy bar with seating on the roof giving great views over the city and water.
Stop for a crepe or two at Kreperia Hen 1-Volga
Close to the water’s edge, you’ll find the colourful Kreperia Hen 1-Volga, which serves a wide selection of sweet and savoury crepes. The large outdoor terrace is filled with colourful pastel furniture and overlooks the ocean, making it the perfect spot for a midday break.
Choose from savoury crepes such as ham and cheese, or sweet crepes including Nutella, biscuits, strawberries and banana. All of the crepes are huge, delicious and range in price from around 50p-£2 maximum.
Visit the Durres Archaeological Museum
Durres Archaeological Museum is the largest archaeological museum in Albania and features a collection of artefacts from the Ancient Greek, Hellenistic and Roman periods. Most notably is the collection of miniature busts of Venus, Durres’s most worshipped goddess in ancient times.
Wandering around the museum and learning about the city is definitely one of the most interesting things to do in Durres for those interested in history and culture.
Walk down the promenade to Ventus Harbor
Venture out into the Adriatic sea (well just a little bit) by walking down the seafront’s pier-like structure which leads to the uniquely located Ventus Harbour hotel and its public restaurant and bar. From the end, there is a great view looking back across the city from a very different angle than you would find elsewhere.
Portiku Wine Bar and Bistro
End your day with dinner and drinks at Poriku Wine Bar and Bistro close to Durres seafront. Portiku is a stylish and modern restaurant built within the old city walls of Durres. The old walls are openly accessible to guests within the restaurant, including a glass floor where you can see the ancient ruins below.
The restaurant serves a top-class menu of international dishes with an extensive wine menu of Albanian and international wines.
Relax on Durres beach The Adriatik Hotel (below) was Durres’s original tourist hotel and is a great spot to set up camp for the day, or even to stay at if you’d rather be located in this part of town.

Albania - a Visit to the Museum
Before leaving Tirana, we visited the National museum, leaving our bags at reception so we could take the local bus to the bus for Shkroda as soon as we came out. Quite an interesting way to spend a couple of hours.

Apollonia Archaeological Park
???? #Apolloni , Fier Albania ????????
Apollonia (Albanian: Apolonia; Greek: Ἀπολλωνία κατ᾿ Ἐπίδαμνον or Ἀπολλωνία πρὸς Ἐπίδαμνον, Apollonia kat' Epidamnon or Apollonia pros Epidamnon) was an ancient Greek city. located on the right bank of the Aous river (modern-day Vjosë). Its ruins are situated in the Fier region, near the village of Pojani (Polina), in modern-day Albania. Apollonia was founded in 588 BCE by Greek colonists from Corfu and Corinth, on a site where native Illyrian tribes lived, and was perhaps the most important of the several classical towns known as Apollonia. Apollonia flourished in the Roman period and was home to a renowned school of philosophy, but began to decline in the 3rd century AD when its harbor started silting up as a result of an earthquake. It was abandoned by the end of Late Antiquity.

Durrës Albania Travel
Durrës Albania Travel - Durrës was once – albeit briefly – Albania's capital. It's now virtually an extension of Tirana, joined to the capital by a ceaseless urban corridor full of hypermarkets and car dealerships. Blessed with a decent 10km stretch of beach, Durrës is sadly a lesson in unplanned development; hundreds of hotels stand side by side, and it's terribly crowded in the summer months. Despite this, there's an interesting amphitheatre to see, although the famous archaeological museum on the seafront has been demolished and a new one is currently being built on the same site.
