Dutch Period Museum Colombo Sri Lanka
In 1971 NAAL was established at the initiative of NUFFIC (Netherlands Universities Foundation For International Co-operation). NAAL proved to be interested in cultural projects including the DPM restauration. The restauration committee in Colombo aqpproached the pioneer of Netherlands Alumni Associations, Evert Jongens at NUFFIC in The Hague for financial support. The official opening of the Dutch Period Museum took place on 10 July 1982. At the initiative of Evert Jongens in 1976 the Netherlands-Sri Lanka Foundation was established in order to raise funds for the restauration project. It was not an easy task. Thirty years ago interest in the VOC in The Netherlands was very small indeed. Many Dutchmen did not wish to be reminded of their colonial past. How different was the situation in 2002! On the 20th of March, exactly the day on which 400 years ago the VOC was founded, a solemn session was held in the Ridderzaal (Hall of Knights) at The Hague. The ceremony, attended by members of the Royal Family, the Presidents of the House of Representatives and Senate, the Prime Minister, several other Ministers and Members of Parliament, was telecast live.
It is a pity that so few tourists during their stay in Colombo make an effort to visit the interesting Dutch Period Museum. From the Fort Railway Station it is less than 10 minutes walking to the busy Princestreet, where at number 96 the DPM is open for visitors, daily, except on Fridays.

Colombo | Sri Lanka | Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct
The Old Colombo Dutch Hospital (known as The Dutch Hospital) is considered to be the oldest building in the Colombo Fort area dating back to the Dutch colonial era in Sri Lanka. It is now a heritage building and a shopping and dining precinct.
The building reflects seventeenth-century Dutch colonial architecture.[2]
The building has five wings forming two courtyards. It is designed to keep out the heat and humidity and provide a comfortable environment within. Like many Colombo Dutch buildings of the era, the walls are 50 cm thick. The structure features massive teak beams. The upper floor is located in the front wing and can be reached with a wooded staircase. This upper storey has a wooden floor. A long open veranda runs along the length of each wing of the building.

Dutch Hospital locality in Pettah, Colombo, Sri Lanka
This video is a tiny slice of a Friday afternoon in Pettah. At midday at this time of year the sun is almost overhead. These people are the hard-working poor of a third world city. They lack contacts, backing and influence. Possibly they lack the intelligence and resourcefulness to improve their lot in life. One feature of all parts of the third world is that the rich and powerful do not care for the poor - not really. What you are seeing is the breeding ground of criminality and then the law enforcement moves in with a heavy hand. At the top of the ant heap are the mega-thieves but law enforcement does not touch them, only their victims. There is little chance of real improvement in the near-future.

St. Anthony's Shrine Kochchikade - Colombo | A Museum for St.Anthony, Colombo, Sri Lanka |Miracles |

In Sri Lanka St. Anthony has many devotees and several Churches have been erected in his honor. Perhaps the most popular one that daily attracts people of every cast, creed or race is the one at Kochchikade, in the heart of the city of Colombo.
One has only to visit this church on any Tuesday of the year, to see the thousands from North, South, East & West who come to pray to St. Anthony, to ask his help for some need, to fulfill promisses made, to thank him for answering their prayers and show their love and respect.
The history of this church at Kochchikade as handed down by tradition and gleaned from the documents preserved in the Archdiocesan Archives in Colombo is as follows;
In the 18th Century, Catholicism was still a proscribed religion in Sri Lanka and priests could not exercise their ministry in public. The Dutch were persecuting the Catholics but who preferred to be degraded, impoverished and ridiculed rather than give up their Faith; Shrines such as Madhu, Talawila and Kochchikade are souvenirs of those dark days of the persecution. (S.G. Per era, S J Historical Sketches page 14) A few Orations from Goa, visited the faithful in Ceylon at the risk at their lives. Fr. Jacome Gonsalves the Superior of Orations who is affectionately remembered in Ceylon as the ‘father of Sinhala Catholic Literature, lamented the fact the Catholics of Colombo had no resident priest. However a zealous priest, Fr. Antonio, disguised as a merchant took up his abode in a house in Maliban Street, Colombo, close to St. Philip Neris Church. (The old Church faced the road) The Dutch discovered his hiding place, but Fr. Antonio, disguised, fled towards Mutwal. He met some fishermen who knew him and his reputation for Sanctity, and volunteered to protect him from the Dutch, provided he obtained from God the favor they wanted, namely the stoppage of Sea erosion. When the pursuers arrived, the fishermen refused to hand over Fr. Antonio until he had granted them the favor they were asking for. Fr. Antonio then returned to his home at Maliban Street, and came to the shoe, clad in his priestly garments and with a large wooden Cross in his hand. Planting the Cross at the spot most threatened by the advancing Sea, he prayed to God to manifest His Glory, by working this miracle. On the third day the waves receded and an extensive sand bank was exposed to the view of all.
The Dutch Government appreciated this favor and offered a reward to the people’s benefactor. The humble priest asked only the permission to live and die near the Cross he had planted. This was granted and the priest built a Chapel with mud in honor of his patron, St. Anthony of Padua. When he died after many years, he was buried there.
The little Chapel which was made of mud was enlarged in 1806. And in 1822 one of the members of the Congregation went to Goa and brought a Statue of St. Anthony and it was solemnly placed on the altar of the small Church. This is the very image that is to day held great veneration at St. Anthony’s Church, Kochchikade,and the side altar on which it rests, is the altar of the ancient Church and stands on the very spot Sanctified by miraculous event to which the origin of the same Sanctuary is due.

This is the Dutch Hospital in Fort, Sri Lanka. It is a shopping arcade and there is precious little in it that is either Dutch or resembling a hospital.
