Here is a little bit of information about Colchester:-

Cunobelin (Shakespeare's Cymbeline), leader of the British Trinovantes tribe, establishes himself at Camulodunum (which means ‘Fortress of the war god Camulos'), expanding both his kingdom and trade with the Roman world.
43 AD
The Roman invasion of Britain. The Emperor Claudius leads the capture of Camulodunum and takes the submission of 11 British kings at Gosbecks (just south west of the present day town centre).
54 AD
Construction of the Temple of Claudius begins (where the Castle now stands).
60 AD
The revolt by Boudica (Boadicea) sees the Temple and the colonia destroyed.
65 - 80 AD
The town walls are built incorporating Britain's largest Roman gateway, Balkerne gate, a magnificent triumphal arch. Some two thirds of this wall still stands, the oldest town wall in Britain.

Pliny the Elder mentions Camulodunum in his ‘Natural History'. This is the earliest historical reference to a British town.
1076
The Normans commence construction of Colchester Castle. It is built over the remains of the Roman Temple of Claudius.

The first Flemish refugees arrive, fleeing from religious persecution. They bring new prosperity to the town from their weaving industry. The area where they lived can still be seen just off the High Street and is known as the Dutch Quarter.
1648
The Siege of Colchester. The town was besieged by the Parliamentarian army during the Civil War for 11 weeks. During this time the townspeople suffered dreadfully and the Roman walls were breached.
1883
The 40.8m (134ft) high water tower, dominates Colchester's skyline then as now. It was soon known as Jumbo after the famous elephant in London Zoo, which had then just been sold amid national protests, to the American circus showman, P. T. Barnum.

The Colchester earthquake causes great damage to a number of buildings in the area.
1892
Castle Park, a classic Victorian park situated just two minutes from the High Street, is opened by the Lord Mayor of London.

HNLMS Groningen (P843) arrives to ABP Ipswich as part of an Ambassadorial visit. 25th January 2019
In recent years the HNLMS Groningen has been part of a NATO campaign to combat drug smuggling in the Caribbean and an anti piracy campaign off the coast of Somalia.
During her Ambassadorial visit to the UK, the HNLMS Groningen sails up the River Orwell to ABP's Port of Ipswich. One of Harwich Haven's experienced pilots board the Groningen at the Cork Station for the inward journey. Just in front of them, the dredger Charlemagne was also boarding a pilot for Ipswich. Charlemagne was vessel number one and the HNLMS Groningen was vessel number two. Both with pilots onboard, they pick up some knots into the harbour before reducing for harbour and river speed limits.
Before she arrived in British waters, two Gray tugs were ordered for her arrival but that was reduced to just one soon after the pilot boarded. The pilot said that the Gray Salvor can meet them somewhere up the River near Woolverstone.
Appearing through the haze, the Chalemagne came in to sight with the Groningen about 5-10 minutes later. Gray Salvor heads down the river to meet the multi-million Euro patrol vessel. The pilot radios the Salvor to confirm he just want them on standby just incase something didn't look right.
With the Charlemagne swinging up by Ro-Ro1, the pilot onboard the Groningen said he will swing off Ro-Ro2 to keep clear of each other.
Proceeding under the Orwell Bridge with the Gray Salvor following near the port quarter, the Armamenton the front section became more visible. The 76 mm Oto Melara Super Rapid sitting proud on bow with a 30 mm Oto Melara Marlin WS sitting just a bit further back.
Just out of sight further up the harbour, the Groningen executes a port swing before heading down to the old Power Station Berth where mooring gang were waiting to make her fast alongside.
