Vol. II - GANSBAAI
CAPE SECRETS
Gansbaai is a popular fishing town located in the western cape. It’s about 2 hours from Cape town and is perhaps best known as the Great White Shark Capital of the world, but there is so much more to this small town.
Gansbaai falls under the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, home to thousands of seabirds, including the iconic African penguins, Whales who migrate here from Antarctica, Orcas (though not very often), Dolphins and roughly 60,000 seals. We had the pleasure of touring the area with a company called Marine Dynamics who founded the conservation trust. They run a highly successful and educational shark diving tour, if you’ve seen Great Whites on TV, they have most likely been filmed here, it honestly changed my preconception of great whites. The founder of Marine Dynamics is Wilfred Chivell.
Marine Dynamics actually founded the African penguin and seabird sanctuary whom they work closely with. This might not be a known fact but the African penguins are endangered and scientist believe they may be extinct by 2013 (which breaks my heart). These beautiful little birds face a variety of challenges such as oil spills, fishing line entanglement, seal bites & shark bites.
Aside exploring this incredible eco-system, we had a chance to explore the Gansbaai caves and the HMS Birkenhead memorial site. Apparently, the legendary Birkenhead treasure is still waiting to be found… The Gansbaai area is also known for its rich Fynbos (part of the Cape Floral Kingdom).
Gansbaai really surprised me, I couldn’t recommend it more for those looking for a fun weekend away.

Great white shark cage diving at the Gansbaai Western Cape South Africa
Now this is what i call GoPro action!!!! Amazing experience diving with great white sharks at the Gansbaai Western Cape South Africa. Normally it's not the intention for the shark to grab the tuna head as its purpose is to lure the shark towards the boat. But this time the great white shark got a hold of it and I got to experience what a shark does to its pray….
This video was shot with my GoPro Hero 3+ in september 2016

3.Surprised early sighting of a southern right whale in Kleinbaai
Great White Shark cage divers were treated to a close up sighting of a Southern Right Whale in Kleinbaai yesterday. This permitted whale watching area of Dyer Island Cruises was favoured by the relaxed whale who did some people watching at the Apex and Whale Whisperer boats. The surprise visit sparks an early beginning of the 2012 whale watching season. Southern Right whales migrate annually to the South African coast from June -- December to mate and to calf.
Exploring Whale Coast, South Africa
Music:
We started off in June in Cape Agulhus - the southernmost tip of Africa, then went to Gansbaai for a boat trip to Dyer Island. Unfortunately, we did not see any whales on this trip as it was a little bit too early in the season, but we did see many other animals, both from the boat and land. Our boat with Dyer Island Cruises stopped by a shark diving boat and we got to see two great white sharks. Later on we watched hundreds of seals sleeping on rocks by dyer island and swimming in the surrounding waters.
After the boat trip it was off to Hermanus - one of the prettiest towns around. We got to see it from the top of the cliffs that surround it as well as the Coast Walk. It's wine route can easily rival that of Cape Wineries.
Next we stopped at Betty's Bay to see the African penguins. Amazing little creatures. And finished the drive at Cape Town airport. We only had 4 days to do this trip, and although it's advisable to do it for longer, we got to see the highlights. If only the whales would have made an appearance...
