Inside Djumaya Mosque from Plovdiv, Bulgaria (14th century)
Djumaya Mosque, is considered the oldest European mosque outside Moorish Spain.
Djumaya Mosque, known also as Ulu Mosque, is a precious architectural monument in the center of Plovdiv that gives an idea of the old settlement of Filibe. It is one of the biggest and the oldest mosques in Bulgaria. It is called Djumaya (from Turkish -- Friday), because the service was held in Friday.
It is believed to be built as an imperial mosque by Shihabedin pasha, son of the patron of Plovdiv and beilerbei of Roumelia, during the reign of Murad II (1359 -- 85). The building has been restored twice: in 1785 and again in 1818 after being damaged in an earthquake.
The Djumaya Mosque is an extremely solid building with thick stone walls and is covered by solid-coated domes. The architecture of the interior seems monumental. There are four square pillars which support nine huge interior vaults. The walls and the vaults are vividly painted with coloured ornaments and quotations from the Koran. Its 23 meter high minaret decorated with zigzag lines rises from the Northeastern corner of the mosque, while diagonally, in the southeastern corner, there is an ancient sun-dial. The mosque is decorated with murals by Nakshi Mustafa Zelebi, dating from the 19 th century.
The interior is marked by a mahfil (pedestal for the singer), a sultan's box and a mimber (pedestal for the imam). It is said to be one of the three examples of the oldest type of the Ottoman worship buildings still preserved on the entire Balkan Peninsula.
It is open most days, and visitors are welcome to inspect the pale blue interior, with its fountain and floral-pattened walls.
The price for the entrance it's just 1 Leva (0.50 Euro).
реновираната Джумая джамия / Cuma Camii / the mosque of Plovdiv
The 'Friday Mosque' (i.e. main mosque) of Plovdiv, Bulgaria is one of the oldest on the Balkans (about 600 years). The early Ottoman architectural style is perfect mix between Byzantian and islamic style. This is the interior after an extensive restoration in 2008. The frescoes however are rather late - from 19th century with alot of European baroque influence at the time.

Walking in PLOVDIV / Bulgaria ????????- 4K 60fps (UHD)
Plovdiv (Bulgarian: Пловдив) is one of the oldest cities in Europe and the second-largest city in Bulgaria. Located in Southern Bulgaria it is one European Capital of Culture in 2019.
We start our walk in the newer part of Plovdiv at the Maritsa River in the North of the inner city. From there we head to the Nebet Tepe hill - one of the 7 hills of the city. Old Plovdiv up there ( 9:00 ) is a tourist attraction with old houses along cobble stoned streets. The archaeological area also provides a nice view over the area.
The main attraction is the Roman-era Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis which hosts concert events. The sun comes out now and we head down to the city centre which has seen renovations over the last couple of years. The shoppingstreet Otets Paisiy is built around the Ancient Stadium of Philipopolis and Dzhumaya Mosque.
There is more to see here yet some sights seem under constructions. We end the walking tour after one hour at Garden of Tsar Simeon.

Top best places to visit in Plovdiv, Bulgaria
Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria and one of the oldest cities in the world.
Plovdiv has evidence of habitation since the 6th millennium BC. It has historically developed on seven hills and that’s why it is often referred to as the City of the Seven Hills.
The main city plaza is the Central Square. It used to be a Forum Romanum, the center of ancient public life.
Adjacent to the square is the Garden of Tsar Simeon, a beautiful park with gorgeous singing fountains.
The square is connected to the main walking street, known as Glavnata. The pedestrian zone full of shops, galleries, and cafes.
Along this street is the starting point of many guided tours, located just in front of the Municipality Building.
The street leads to two interesting districts. A bohemian quarter full of artists and pubs, the Kapana.
And to the very enjoyable Old Town, which is free of cars in this area with many cobblestone streets and historic houses turned into museums.
Almost every house in the Old Town has its characteristic exterior and interior decoration.
Plovdiv was selected as the European Capital of Culture thanks to its numerous museums, galleries and cultural events.
Plovdiv has been a gathering center for the Orthodox Christians for centuries, so there are several churches worth a visit, such as:
The Virgin Mary Church,
The very impressive St Marina Church with a unique pillar arcade.
And the Church of St Constantine and Helena which is considered to be among the oldest churches in Bulgaria.
Two mosques have remained in the city since the Ottoman era.
The Imarethane Mosque with different, interesting minaret.
And, in the center, the Dzhumaya Mosque.
Next to it, at the end of Glavnata, is the Ancient Stadium from the Roman times.
Plovdiv was known for most of its history by the name Philippopolis. There are many remains from those times, like:
The Roman Odeon.
The Roman Amphitheater, probably the most famous tourist attraction in the city.
The Small Basilica, the ruins of the early Christian church in recently restored building.
The Eastern Gate, one of the three entrances of the ancient city.
The Roman Fortress, with parts of defensive walls, towers and ancient buildings.
From the fort there is a great view of Plovdiv.

Plovdiv Old Town in Plovdiv, Bulgaria
Ancient Plovdiv Architectural Reserve is a well-preserved complex where on a relatively small area visitors can take walks through different historical ages, see ancient buildings adapted to the modern way of life and feel the spirit of the town from the Bulgarian Revival Period.
The Old Town, as the complex is known, lies on a natural elevation – the three hills (the closely situated Dzhambaz Hill, Nebet Hill, and Taksim Hill). Many peoples have inhabited this place through the centuries. And all of them have left traces of their cultures and also the different names they gave to the town. Plovdiv is one of the oldest towns in Europe – it dates back to 4000 years BC. During Antiquity the Thracians came to the hill and set up a fortified settlement that was conquered by Philip of Macedon in the 2nd century BC. He gave one of the many names of the town - Philipopolis, and surrounded it with thick fortification walls. Later the Thracians regained control over the town, but after a series of battles they lost it to the Romans in the 1st century. A fortress from Thracian times is preserved on the very summit of Nebet Hill.
During the reign of the Roman Empire Plovdiv (then called Trimontium) was an important district centre. The town flourished and there was a construction boom of buildings, equipment and roads.
Many well-preserved remains have survived from the prospering town, such as paved streets, fortification walls, buildings, water-supply system and sewerage. Trimontium expanded so much that it grew out of its walls and this called for the construction of new ones. Many parts of the town were located at the foot of the hill rather than on it.
Some of the more interesting sites from the Roman Period are the Roman Theatre, the Roman Stadium, the Ancient Forum, and Irene Residential House.
The Roman Theatre (the Amphitheatre) lies in a natural depression between Taksim and Dzhambaz Hills. It was constructed during the rule of Emperor Trajan (beginning of the 2nd century). It is extremely well-preserved. It used to have rich decoration and could seat up to seven thousand spectators. After it has been thoroughly restored, today performances can once again be staged at the ancient theatre.
The Roman Stadium is located beneath Dzhumayata Square where only part of it is visible. It was built in the 2nd century and was designed after the Stadium at Delphi – there are only 12 such stadiums in the world.
The Ancient Forum lies near Tsentralen Square, in close proximity to the Central Post Office. It was built in the 1st century during the reign of Emperor Vespasian. It is a complex comprising buildings, a library, a mint, an odeon, etc.
Irene Residential House can be seen in the Archaeological Underpass on Tsar Boris III Blvd. It has very rich mosaic decoration which includes a portrait of a woman signed with the name Irene and dates back to the 3rd – 4th centuries.
This was followed by the Byzantine period of the town – end of the 4th century. Not long after that the Slavs also came to this place – they named the town Paldin.
When the First Bulgarian Empire was established (7th century) Paldin was left outside of its borders. Khan Krum (who reigned in the period 803 – 814) was the first to conquer the town in 812, and it became official part of the state under Khan Malamir (who ruled in the period 831 – 836). The Byzantines managed to conquer it back, but with a varying success. In the course of time the control over the town switched many times, and there was even a brief period when it was governed by the knights of the Fourth Crusade. In 1344 the Bulgarians eventually gained control over the town.
The popular eastern fortress gate Hisar Kapia (Fortress Gate) is a remnant from the Middle Ages.
The Ottoman army conquered Plovdiv in 1364 and gave new direction to the development of the town. The Byzantine architecture was succeeded by a completely new construction style with typical Oriental features. The new name of the town was Filibe. Dzhumaya Mosque (located in the centre of the town, next to the Ancient Stadium), Chifte Bath (built in 1582 and transformed into a centre for modern arts), and the 16th century Clock Tower on the summit of Sahat Hill are all surviving examples from this period.

Ancient Roman Stadium Plovdiv
The Roman Stadium in Plovdiv is among the largest Roman structures in the Balkans. The massive edifice is 180 long and had a capacity for over 30,000 people. It is believed to have been built during the reign of Septimus Severus. Today, the stadium is located in the centre of the city, under the main trade centre. Only the northern end of the edifice can be observed from Dzhumayata Square. The larger portion still lies underground, running south from the visible portion, beneath the main street of the town. Further excavation would be very difficult and costly. The Dzhumaya Mosque is one of the Balkans' oldest, dating from the mid-15th century. This enormous structure with a 23m minaret was the largest of Plovdiv's more than 50 Ottoman-era mosques.Dzhumaya mosque is one of the oldest Ottoman religious buildings in the Balkans, and among the biggest in Bulgaria.A remarkable solar clock, a donation from a Russian officer, is placed on the south-western corner of the building.
