NAGALAND - DZULEKE & KHONOMA | Travelling in North-East India | Indian Travel vlogs
Welcome To Nagaland! (2/3) DZULEKE & KHONOMA - The villages in Nagaland.
I visited Nagaland in the month of April and had the opportunity to open my mind to endless experiences! For the longest time, Nagaland and the whole of North East has been so neglected: tourism wise and also culturally :(. So I took the plunge to discover the beautiful state myself, with two other creators- Tanya Khanijow & Namrata Menon. These girls have been the most lovely to travel with :)
This is Part 2 of the Nagaland series #TakeMeToNagaland! there are 3 in total! please watch part 1 because it's super fun and features the cities - Dimapur & Kohima ( the capital of Nagaland)
????????Things to remember when you plan your travel:????????
????Dzuleke has a total of ONLY 5 homestays. You have to book your stay in advance because you do not want to be stranded in the village with no roof. Try the homestay I stayed in, or Anisie Homestay on Airbnb.
????There is absolutely no internet or phone signal in Dzuleke. LOVELY!
????You need an ILP-(Inner Line Permit) to enter the state of Nagaland. You can apply here—
????Commute in the city is pretty straightforward. You can use the local rickshaws, or hire a car to go around. The roads are super bumpy especially in Dimapur & Kohima, so be prepared :D
????The food scene is very much different than mainland. Vegetarians options are available, but make sure you mention you’re vegetarian since they also tend to cook their veggies in pork fat. Nagaland thrives on pork and beef, and a lot of things you don’t see in the rest of the country. I suggest that you visit with an open mind, else it will be super difficult to survive. I personally loved the food. :D
????Make sure you have enough cash on you. It’s advisable to carry cash from home since it was even hard to find ATMs.
????Homestays are the best way to experience the local living. Since the people are super friendly, the hosts are lovely to interact with and know so many things about the Naga culture.
????Do a lot of research before you visit. The state has 16 different tribes and they speak different dialects. Read about their lifestyle and food.
????Carry your rainwear and warm clothes since the weather is pretty unpredictable. The best time to travel according to me is December (for Hornbill festival ) and also April.
????Nagaland is a dry state! :P
????Nagaland is a state full of beauty and the nicest people I've ever come across. The misconceptions about this magic land are hilarious! So do not believe anything else you hear about this place. We stayed here for 10 days and had no issues, problems at all! Trust me! Your next travel, must be planned for the north-east especially NAGALANDDD!
????Also, thanks to Tanya and Namrata, for helping me film so many shots!
This video, and the rest of the videos of the Nagaland series are in collaboration with Tanya Khanijow! and also in collaboration with the super talented cinematographer - Namrata Menon :* Love you my mungi :*

Kohima City to Dzuleke 40km. Spent the last day of 2019 at Dzuleke. I just posted like that no decorations no words just moments.
DZULEKE & POILWA
Dzuleke is an idyllic village of the Angami tribe of Nagaland and is located 40km away from capital city Kohima. Travelers visiting Kohima often take a day trip to the nearby villages to explore the beautiful countryside and also to observe the culture and traditional lifestyle of the native Angami people. Khonoma and Dzuleke became well known to the outside world as they were the first villages to ban hunting in order to protect their community forests
BEST PICNIC SPOT EVER. DZULEKE, KOHIMA.
A trip to cherish (Dzuleke trip)
Just a day out with colleagues before my farewell! Farewell isn't a happy moment but these beautiful people made me and my last day really special! I've been blessed with many wonderful people and these three are twice blessings among all! Thank you guys for making the day so special and memorable. It was indeed a tiresome, exciting, wonderful and unforgettable experience!

Solo Girl Travels to Nagaland | Kohima | Khonoma | Hornbill Festival
I dared a SOLO trip in Nagaland. I found it the kindest state of North East India endowed with unconditional love and care for travelers. Well known for its Kohima War Cemetry and 30 tribes spread across the different parts and corners of Nagaland. Nagaland offers great sunsets, cultural diversity, Bhut Jolokia, lush green valleys and non-vegetarian food(sadly I am a vegetarian).
Watch my entire journey of almost half a month from Shillong (Meghalaya) to hitchhiking across Nagaland, to visiting Kohima War Cemetery, to Khonoma Village, to Mokochung, to lesser known village Dzuleke and trek to Puliebadze then watching Hornbill Festival for a few days before I head to Majuli, Assam.
Shot in December 2017.
I hope you all enjoy this video.

Family Trip To Dzuleke Nagaland | POV Style | No Commentary
Filmed on 31st December 2018 during some good ol' family time. This is the last video of our channel to be filmed and produced in the year 2018. Dzuleke is just so beautiful that it's nearly impossible to capture the true beauty of the place on any camera. Still gave it a try though!
P.S - The breath-taking scenery was totally worth the freezing temperature out there!

KHONOMA VILLAGE || ROAD TRIP TO THE FIRST GREEN VILLAGE OF INDIA
Khonoma village is located about 20 km from the state capital, Kohima. The village, referred to as Khwunoria (named after the Angami term for a local plant, Glouthera fragrantisima), is estimated to be around 700 years old and is spread over an area of 123sq.km. The total population of the village is about 3000, settled in 600 households. Khonoma is famous for its forests and a unique form of agriculture, including some of the oldest terraced cultivation in the region. The terrain of the village is hilly, ranging from gentle slopes to steep and rugged hillsides. The hills are covered with lush forestland, rich in various species of flora and fauna. The state bird, Blyth’s tragopan, a pheasant now nationally endangered, is reprtedly found here.
Over a hundred years ago, advancing British troops found themselves facing a determined warrior tribe in the highlands of Nagaland. The Angami men of Khonoma, famed for their martial prowess and strategic skills, fought a resolute battle to safeguard their territory, inflicting heavy casualties on the foreign soldiers. The village is recorded to have resisted British rule in the region from 1830s to 1880. Finally a truce between the two stopped further bloodshed, but meanwhile Khonoma village had etched its name into the history of Indian resistance to the colonial invasion. Christianity was introduced in the village in 1890, and today most of the villagers are of this faith.
Community conservation
Wildlife hunting is a way of life with the Naga tribes, and a large number of birds and animals are killed every year, including the endangered tragopans. In 1993, 300 Tragopans were reported to be killed for their meat in the village. This magnitude of killing concerned the more ecologically sensitive people of the village and they launched a crusade against hunting. These included some villagers and some who belonged to the village but now resided and were employed outside.
In 1998, the Khonoma village council declared its intention to notify about 2000 ha (20 sq km) as the Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary (KNCTS). This was motivated by some of the village elders, notably Tsilie Sakhrie, who had in the 1980s been a contractor dealing with the Forest Department. During this time he had been having discussions with forest officer T. Angami, who motivated him to consider dedicating a part of the village forests to wildlife conservation. In the 1980s, Tsilie proposed that the village do something to this effect, but could not achieve a consensus. In 1995, he became a member of the village council. Concerned by the high number of birds being killed every year, Tsilie again broached the subject. A number of villagers were opposed to the idea, since hunting was so much a part of their culture. However, over the next three years, through extensive discussions in the village, the majority were convinced. The sanctuary’s foundation stone was laid in December 1998; it was also decided to ban hunting in the entire village, not only the sanctuary area.
