EDF Energy team inspires budding engineers at Royal Bath & West Show
Members of EDF Energy’s Hinkley Point C team help inspire the next generation of engineers at annual Royal Bath & West Show near Shepton Mallet in Somerset.
Joined by industry leaders in the Imagineering Zone, the team encouraged young people aged between 8 and 16 to consider studying science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects.
The marquee was packed with innovative displays and activities, using some of the latest technology to reveal the techniques behind modern manufacturing and energy production. There was also the opportunity to win prizes by snapping selfies at the EDF Energy stand and to learn more about the long-term education and career prospects offered by the company.
The Imagineering area, which is led by independent education charity the Imagineering Foundation, is also supported by Bridgwater College, Yeovil College, AugustaWestland, Thales, GE Aviation, BMT, Doosan Babcock, City of Bristol College and the University of the West of England.
In addition to staff from the Hinkley Point C project, the EDF Energy team included volunteers from its training campus at Cannington Court as well as staff from Hinkley Point Visitor Centre in Bridgwater and the operational Hinkley Point B power station.

MARIE HOWE: We're here today with EDF-Energy supporting the Bath and West Show. We're inside this Imagineering Tent which is all about engaging with and inspiring youngsters to be part of that STEM. So, really we're here to engage, enthuse. Hopefully for them to part of the future of nuclear power. Here we have electrical circuits, wind turbines, and we have a bike that you can actually charge your mobile phones on today, lots of robots and as you can see behind us the mobile visitor centre which is all about that future of Hinkley Point and EDF Energy.
TOM THAYER: So, there's a huge, huge skills shortage in the UK in careers based around science, technology, engineering and maths. So, it's very important for us as a company and other companies to be involved in events like today at the Royal Bath and West Show to promote science, technology, engineering and maths to young people and their families to show them how exciting it is and all of the opportunities that are available for young people as they get older in careers that will sustain them in employment for a long time.
Community Fund Victoria Park Community Centre
EDF Energy has set up a fund to be spent on improvements for communities most affected by the development of Hinkley Point C.
Victoria Park Community Centre in Bridgwater received funding towards a Digital Inclusion and Job Club which provides a safe and friendly environment to access the web for tasks such as job searches, learning computer skills, registering for welfare and benefits and much more. Westfield Church has also received funding to build a permanent Community Street Cafe.
The company has committed £20 million towards the Community Fund which has already granted financial support to a number of exciting projects across Somerset.

- GARETH HUGHES - Victoria Park Community Centre Manager: The Victoria Park Community Centre sits on the outskirts of Bridgwater on the way to Cannington and the Hinkley C site. We are recognised as an area where a number of people are unemployed and we wanted to give access to digital facilities that are on the doorstep in the community with lots of local people being recognised as not having a home computer or internet access. The grant has enabled local people to have good broadband access with facilities to do anything from social media to do the actual applications for jobs or universal credit.

HPC Inspire: Women Into Construction and Engineering
Part of our wider Inspire Education Programme, the Women Into Construction and Engineering Initiative in collaboration with Bridgwater College is helping the young women of Somerset discover the huge array of opportunities available in a career they may have never considered.

Alison Chapman
Our Women Into Construction and Engineering initiative is part of our wider Inspire programme and the whole aim of it is to get young women in the area looking at careers they wouldn't previously have thought of. So giving them experience of actually what construction is like, to give them local role models to actually show them what opportunities there are at Hinkley Point C.
Gemma
It’s a lot different from everyday school work, we are out driving diggers and stuff and I thought - this is really good, I could get a future in this, and thinking I'm a bit further to getting into EDF now.
Chloe
Because it’s not just a men's thing, it’s definitely something that women can do and I think we need to get more women into it, because people think it’s something to do with men but it’s not. It could change what I want to do for my options, so if I want to go down the engineering route then I have to do triple science.
Rebecca Griggs
Science isn't really discussed as a career that much. Students have the understanding that you can be a Doctor, that you can be things like that - they understand that as a science role, but I don't think they have a clear understanding of what engineering could be for them. And obviously having gone to university I know there are loads of different engineering degrees you can do, but if you ask the students the same thing - they wouldn't have that idea. So I think this is something that needs to be discussed more. And obviously events like this help that and so this is brilliant. The EDF Energy Women Into Construction and Engineering Workshop is really good - they won't have had anything like that. Just the big display of the nuclear power station and how it works is fantastic
Bronwen Webb
And what's so good about the HPC project is that it’s not just about bricks and mortar for the girls, there are jobs from catering to logistics, to administration, to finance, to dealing with the public, to dealing with visitors - to doing absolutely anything. The world is your oyster girls so just get out there and come and join us.
Meg Moore
The Inspire Education programme is really important as an investment into the future, not only for EDF Energy but for the British nuclear industry, so engaging with young people who are in schools now, to be the future workforce for the nuclear industry is really great.
Caitlin
It’s been really helpful to find out about them and what they do, I know so much more about nuclear energy now.
Kirsty
I've learnt today in the workshop that there are lots of different jobs. It's not just boys who can do engineering. Because there are loads of different jobs you can do related to engineering. It's not just literally engineering on its own.
Gemma
. . . a sense of fulfillment knowing I have done something that not everyone has done.
Alison Chapman
It isn't just jobs for the boys in the local area. I really want to see the girls getting something out of this project and inspiring the future generations to work on the operational power station as well.
