Roy Henry Vickers, CM, OBC (born June, 1946, in Laxgalts'ap (now known as Greenville), British Columbia) is a Canadian First Nations artist. He owns and operates a gallery in Tofino, British Columbia.
is The Artist's Website.........
Vickers was born on the Nass River but raised in Kitkatla, Hazelton, British Columbia, and Victoria, B.C. His father was a fisherman who was matrilineally Tsimshian, also with Haida and Heiltsuk ancestry. His mother was a schoolteacher whose parents had immigrated from England and who was in the 1940s adopted into the Eagle clan at Kitkatla, B.C. (making Roy also Eagle). His grandfather was a Kitkatla canoe-carver. The paintings and works that he has created reflect this mixed heritage as his work has many elements of the traditional art of the First Nations peoples of the Pacific Northwest, but remains quite distinctive.
Vickers became interested in Northwest Coast art partly under the influence of the anthropologist Wilson Duff.
His work has been the official gift of the Province of British Columbia to visiting foreign leaders several times. In 1987 the original of his painting A Meeting of Chiefs was the official gift to Queen Elizabeth II. And in 1993 artist's proofs of his print The Homecoming were the Province's gift to Bill Clinton and Boris Yeltsin.
Vickers has been the artistic advisor to several events in British Columbia. In 1994 he was the artistic advisor to the architects and designers of the 1994 Commonwealth Games. For the Games Vickers also created more than 20 totem poles. Also, from 1987 to 1995 Vickers was the artistic advisor for the Vancouver International Airport's new terminal. Some of his work is prominently displayed there for travellers to admire.
Once a substance abuser, in 1992 he created VisionQuest, a non-profit organization designed to help individuals with addictive personalities.
A Selection Of 40 Years Of RHV Creativity
I am coming up on 40 years since I left Kasan School in Hazelton and struck out on my career as an artist. The Queen's Silver Jubilee, The Order of BC, The Order Of Canada, Queen's Golden Jubillee, Doctor Of Letters From York University, The McLeans Honour Role; so many highlights including the painting of A Meeting Of Chiefs gifted to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth at the Commonwealth Summit in 1987. My Eagle Aerie Gallery going strong in Tofino after 21 years. An adoption into the big Walkus family from Owikeeno and the hereditary Chieftainship Tlakwagila. Over 20 years of healing and sobriety and a happy move back to Hazelton to live with my family, I know it is rare when you get to live out your dreams and work from inspiration.
I wonder what 40 more years can bring, a satisfied mind would be the greatest....

Canadian artist Roy Henry Vickers is best known around the world for his limited edition prints. He is also an accomplished carver, design advisor of prestigious public spaces, a sought-after keynote speaker, and publisher and author of several successful books.
In addition, he is a recognized leader in the First Nations community, and a tireless spokesperson for recovery from addictions and abuse.
Roy has received many awards and honours for his art and community involvement. Among them are a hereditary chieftainship and several hereditary names he has received from Northwest Coast First Nations.
In 1994, Maclean's magazine included Roy as the first artist ever in its Annual Honour Roll of Extraordinary Canadian Achievers. In 1998, the Province of British Columbia appointed Roy to the prestigious Order of B.C. and in 2003, Roy received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal. In 2003, a video featuring Roy was part of the successful Vancouver 2010 Olympic Bid Roy is the author of Solstice:
The Art of Roy Henry Vickers (1988) and Spirit Transformed: A Journey from Tree to Totem (1996), and the illustrator of the best-selling book The Elders Are Watching (1990). In 2003, Roy published his long-awaited second milestone book Copperman - The Art of Roy Henry Vickers, which is a substantial retrospective of his work and images of the past 15 years. In 2013 he released the book Raven Brings the Light, a classic legend of the origin of daylight.
The success of Roy's Eagle Aerie Gallery is a remarkable example of the universal appeal of his art. The Gallery is a traditional northwest coast longhouse Roy built in 1986 in the village of Tofino, on the extreme west coast of Vancouver Island.
An artist-owned gallery was - and still is - a rarity and at best a risky business, let alone one built far away from the media and the art-buying public. Today, Eagle Aerie Gallery welcomes more than 200,000 visitors a year from around the world and it is one of the area's main attractions.
Also in 2004, Roy returned with his family to Hazelton, where he now lives and works by the majestic Skeena River Jennifer Steven.
