A Door County Minute: Eagle Trail in Peninsula State Park
The most recent episode in a series of new videos from the publisher of the Door County Go! Guide, A Door County Minute unveils experiences and events you won't want to miss during your visit to the Door Peninsula.
In this new edition, we visit Eagle Trail, the beautiful hiking path in Fish Creek's Peninsula State Park, i.e. the crown jewel of the State of Wisconsin parks system. A two-mile hiking loop that drops more than 200 feet from atop the bluff to the bottom, the Trail features jaw-dropping views of the shoreline and the surrounding waters of Green Bay, and is literally just beneath the Niagara Escarpment. Eagle Trail is also the park’s most difficult hike and definitely requires appropriate footwear (no sandals!).

Long-time residents of Fish Creek, Wisconsin, Itsie and Janet Krause were interviewed in October 2016 for a new video about the famed Eagle Tower in Peninsula State Park. Itsie's father was the Park's carpenter, and in that role both father and son worked on the new Eagle Tower structure, built in 1932. Itsie's pay? A bright red Schwinn bicycle. Eagle Tower in Peninsula Park: Will it be torn down?
Eagle Tower, first built in 1912, has been closed since May 2014. The DNR claims it has deteriorated to an unsafe condition, and they want to tear it down, with no plans to replace it.
State Senator Frank Lasee organized a meeting at the old Gibraltar Town Hall for citizens to express their concerns. It was SRO and everyone who testified wanted the tower to be either preserved or replaced ASAP. The DNR says -- not so fast --- and for now, wants to take a few more years to study the situation.
Advocate reporter Pete Devlin introduces our show and does a quick wrapup at the end.
Peninsula State Park is between Fish Creek and Ephraim, Wisconsin.

Eagle Tower is a 75 foot observation tower in Door County that sits atop a 180-ft. limestone bluff, part of the massive Niagara Escarpment. From the top of the tower (101 steps) you can see Peninsula State Park, the surrounding islands and the Upper Michigan shoreline.
The current tower was built in 1932, replacing the original tower that was built on Eagle Bluff in 1914.
Until September 2016, iconic Eagle Tower stood in one of the most unique state parks in Wisconsin, Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek. The tower was enjoyed by more than a million people every year, and its beautiful, sweeping views of the blue waters of Green Bay were incredible.
