Skybok: Eagles' Nest Wine Estate (Cape Town, South Africa)
Constantia Main Road, Cape Town.
Constantia - Eagles Nest - Hidden Gems
Eagles’ Nest is situated on the slopes of the Constantia mountain range, which forms part of the world-famous Table Mountain. The valley and its superior class wines meant that they decided to plant the farm with varieties that best suited this unique farm. Maintenance is done throughout the year on the vineyards by hand. They believe that wine making starts in the vineyard with good root stock and clone selection, thereafter with individual block and vine management and finally with regulated disease control.
Shiraz, Merlot and Viognier are the predominant varietals planted at Eagles Nest to ensure that this was the best grape varieties to plant for these soil types and climatic conditions. The vineyards are situated on steep slopes to capture the correct sunlight conditions throughout the very dry summer seasons. They water the vines by drip-feeding during the hot summer months to reduce stress on the vines. The vines grow exceptionally well here because of the above average rainfall in the area and they can produce as much as 140 tonnes per season. This is also partly due to the fact that they are able to plant vines at a much higher density per hectare that normal. Eagles Nest is one of South Africa’s steepest wine farms that is commercially farmed. It is absolutely a little piece paradise.
Eagles Nest was used from 1836 as a refreshment station between Wynberg in the east, and Hout Bay harbor in the west. The farm was originally planted as a vegetable producer for the local markets and at some stage they also farmed export quality fruit. Constantia Nek was the mountain pass that was used to cross over the mountain between these two towns. The Mylrea family purchased the farm in 1984. Most of the farm was destroyed by fire during 2000 except for some outbuildings.
Eagles Nest serve the most scrumptious platters with a variety of cheeses and cured meats – and to top it of the most delicious home baked breads.
Eagles Nest - An introduction
Vol. I - BEAU CONSTANTIA
Cape Secrets.
Beau Constantia is one of the most beautiful wine farms in Constantia by far (in my opinion). Situated at the top of the Constantia Nek, this boutique wine farm offers a spectacular setting, beautiful modern architecture and breathtaking views, unrivalled by any other Constantia farm. The wines are exquisite and Beau have recently added Gin & (gold leaf) Vodka to their tasty list.
As if that wasn’t enough, there is a new addition to Beau that has got Cape Town buzzing; Liam Tomlin’s - Chefs Warehouse. The Beau Constantia Chefs Warehouse is headed by chef Ivor Jones who with his team serve an ever changing Tapas menu – 8 dishes of mouth-watering flavors and combinations, perfect after an afternoon wine tasting.

Ok, ok ok. Amazing red blends and one hell of a Viognier. Yes, I am biased but this Viognier will convert a beer drinker into a white wine lover.
Thanks to Johan, we never missed the uniqueness of the red blend and were educated quite extensively about all their wines. We heard that Johan came from an theatrical background and was converted with Viognier to a Winie (Wine lover - Sommelier)
This place not only has fantastic wines but a SPECTACULAR view and one of the top restaurants in South Africa (the Chef’s Warehouse)

We are on a roll, visiting yet another boutique wine farm in Constantia. This place is known for their ultra premium cool climate wines, and their VIEW!!!
We were given a quick sneak peak of their brand new Chenin Blanc and white blend which I would highly recommend you go there and taste!
My Gem for the day was their Number 5. Its a 5 bordeaux blend and has the complexity and length of a national highway blended together with buckets of red fruit and hints of fynbos. Yes, I actually smelt the fynbos.
Let me brag for them a little about this one. Check out this bottles awards:

WOW Capetown Expert Travel and Tourism Guide South Africa
You can visit Cape Town pretty much any time of year. Summer is the most popular, with peak season falling between mid-December and early January.
Another surge of visitors descends during the hot months of February and March. In April, the temperatures are balmy, the light is softer, the Cape Doctor (the South-easterly wind that howls through the city) is dormant and the sunsets are spectacular.
The temperate winter sometimes starts in May, more often June/July. Sunny days alternate with downpours that bring verdant relief, the mountain streams gushing into rocky gullies and watering the winter-flowering fynbos, including proteas, lilies and aloes. This is the most exhilarating time of year to explore the slopes of Table Mountain on foot.
July to November is the time when the southern right whales migrate to calve and nurse, providing the best land-based whale-watching in the world – but be warned, July and August can be wet. October to November is when the Cape floral kingdom again wows with a new cycle of flowering species, while the beaches, still relatively empty, sparkle in the temperate sun. This is when some of the best deals of the summer season are to be had – especially if you book early.
Where to go.
No visit to Cape Town is complete without circumnavigating the peninsula, travelling south from the city, Waterfront or Camps Bay (the most popular areas where visitors choose to base themselves) along the M3, stopping at Kirstenbosch (these gardens are essential viewing) and visiting a few Constantia wineries en route (Klein Constantia and Eagles Nest make a good contrast). I’d recommend you stop for lunch in the charming seaside village of Kalk Bay, and set aside an hour or so to browse the quaint shops and art galleries there (or revisit them at a later time), before tackling Cape Point and Chapman’s Peak Drive. Llundudno, Clifton and Boulders are the city’s prettiest beaches. And do set aside a day to tour the Winelands options, ringed with mountains – Stellenbosch terroir produces the best red wines and has a lovely historic town centre.
