SENIOR COUNTY FINAL
CLASSY CLARA FALL TO SUPER SHAMROCKS
In any other era Clara would be champions for the second year in a row and would be favourites to complete the coveted three. But a rejuvenated Shamrocks team with an obvious serious intent has halted their run.
For most of this season Shamrocks have displayed a stronger structure in defence and a more lethal mobile front line. Their midfield pairing has varied but has always swept up from defence and given plentiful supply to the scorers in chief.
Many have doubted their ability to win another Senior Championship. I could not see any reason for this doubt judging on what I saw developing. Doubters suggested complacency, fatigue, lack of motivation and a weakness in defence. The Shamrocks are too professional and ambitious to tolerate any of the above. The only obstacle to their progress could be injuries.
They arrived in Nowlan Park with their panel injury free so the eight thousand plus crowd waited to judge the Shamrocks approach.
The doubters had a field day early on when Clara raced away with a deserved lead. The Shamrocks appeared at sea and under pressure, a repeat of the first quarter in the semi final against St. Martins.
But the Shamrock machine didn’t panic and once it gained momentum and slipped in to rhythm the game was over for Clara.
The six Ballyhale forwards scored. This a major feature of their style and all teams with serious ambition should be adopting this method. Joe Holden launched ball after ball from deep defence and Michael Fennelly sprayed ball to the wings to set up critical scores. Conor Walsh’s move to midfield was a success and this gives Shamrocks alternatives as they progress through Leinster. Cha Fitzpatrick has renewed spirit and his scores were typical of old.
Clara are a fine unit and did their utmost in all sectors to stem the Shamrock tide. Chris Bolger was the star up front on the day. Lester Ryan gave a sterling performance and Conor O’Shea again managed to show his attacking flair with two nice points. James Nolan set up important scores thought not scoring himself. David Langton continued his sweeping style and Shane Prendergast obviously has overcome his injury.
Clara have enjoyed a wonderful two years at the very top level and are without a doubt, the second best team in the greatest hurling county.
The seek him here, they seek him there.
And its not Paul Galvin or Tommy Bowe, the dedicated followers of fashion. But the wonderful Henry Shefflin, the greatest exponent of all that is special, about the art of hurling. One of Henrys ploys is to disappear from the chaos and the obvious only to appear when the ball lands in his hand. Too late, the heads turn and the question is always how did he get free and get there.
Typical on Sunday. Michael Fennelly gained possession in defence. He delivered a ball, long and wide to the far country end of the park. There was Henry, all alone, only spotted when the ball was already safely in his hand. He took a few steps, all the time looking for options and set up a precise pass for Mark Aylward who finished to the net. Of course Mark had been doing his own work off the ball, typical Shamrock style, and offered Henry one of his many options.
It wasn’t the only time Henry operated far away from his own spot on the field. On one occasion he was back on his own forty winning ball and delivering safely to the forwards who had stayed “at home”.
There is no doubting Shamrocks enthusiasm at this stage and with their intentions obvious in Sunday’s final they are in with a massive chance of marching through Leinster for starters. Their work rate, their support play and honesty is exemplary. This can be adopted by all teams but their skill level is exceptional and will be the key factor when all else is equal.
