Pécs has always been close to my heart. I lived and went to school here when I was a kid, sang and performed at its the National Theater, had lots of fun sledding on the nearby slopes of Mecsek etc. Occasionally I still visit friends there when I get a chance. Last summer, I took my family to Pécs for a couple days and I managed to sneak away Sunday morning for enough time to put this video together for you.
Pécs is an ancient city in southern Hungary, close to the Croatian border. Founded by the Romans, it's known for its architectural landmarks such as the Early Christian Mausoleum, which features frescoed tombs. Vast Pécs Cathedral towers over central Szent István Square. The domed Mosque of Pasha Gazi Kasim was built in the 16th century during the Ottoman occupation of the city and is now a Catholic church.

SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go to the beautiful Greek island of Rhodes and let's visit the historic (plus, abandoned and neglected) Murad Reis Mosque and the adjacent cemetery.
The mosque was built in 1524 just after the Ottoman conquest of Rhodes and is named after Murat Reis (or Murad there’s no definitive spelling) who was an Ottoman naval commander. Born in Rhodes to Albanian parents he is buried in the cemetery. His tomb is still there and for many years Ottoman sailors would visit for good luck on their voyages.
There’s a decayed elegance to the graveyard, next to the mosque, with its unique Turkish gravestones. The ones that have turbans are male and the more pineapple shaped ones are women. They are ornately carved and look long neglected.
If you’ve got an hour to spare and are looking for a place to get away from the tourists, take a wander around under the eucalyptus trees and enjoy this very historical place.
Rhodes, the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands, is known for its beach resorts, ancient ruins and remnants of its occupation by the Knights of St. John during the Crusades. The city of Rhodes has an Old Town featuring the medieval Street of the Knights and the castlelike Palace of the Grand Masters. Captured by the Ottomans and then held by the Italians, the palace is now a history museum.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

Scientists discover Ottoman-era town where heart of Suleiman the Magnificent is thought to be burrie
Hungarian scientists said they are a step closer to finding the heart of Suleiman the Magnificent after discovering the remains of an Ottoman-era town in the area in southern Hungary where the sultan died in 1566.
He died while his troops besieged the fortress of Szigetvar, defended by locals led by Croatian-Hungarian nobleman Miklos Zrinyi.
Their leader's death was kept a secret from his troops for some 48 days.
Historians believe Suleiman's heart and internal organs were buried near Szigetvar, and his body taken back to Constantinople, as Istanbul was then known.
The mayor of Szigetvar, Janos Kolovics, said the find would help expand relations between Hungary and Turkey, which has provided financial support for several projects meant to highlight the Turks' historical presence in the region.
Norbert Pap, a member of the research and excavation team, said the discovery of the Ottoman town should offer clues that will help them narrow down their search for the tomb containing the sultan's heart.
We have discovered a medieval town called Turbek. It was founded by the Ottomans after the death of Sultan Suleiman, he said.
Pap said the settlement was destroyed in the 1680s after the Turks were driven out of Hungary.
Until his death at age 71, Suleiman was the Ottoman Empire's longest-ruling sultan, and the Turks greatly expanded their dominance in the Balkans, the Middle East and northern Africa during his 46-year reign.
Pap said the objects found in the area so far, including luxury goods such as Chinese porcelain, Persian ceramics and glass, indicate that the town's population was wealthy.
The discovery is also considered extraordinary because the Turks rarely built their own cities in the areas they occupied, preferring instead to inhabit already existing settlements.
Pap said the bricks-and-mortar town was most probably built with commemorative, spiritual and political purposes around or near the tomb said to contain Suleiman's heart.
Historical sources indicate that a mosque, a dervish cloister and military barracks were built near the tomb, later expanded with a tavern, a madrasa and an inn for pilgrims journeying to the resting place of Suleiman's heart.
We are closer and closer to the tomb and the buildings, Pap said, adding that the area expected to be explored is now covered by vineyards and orchards, and belongs to around 12 different owners.

According to a report in The Slovak Spectator, archaeologistViktóriaTittonová led an investigation of an area of a castle located near what is now the Slovakia-Hungary border.
“We found silver coins, ceramics, pipes, knives, and even vessels and sacks with the remains of grains,” she said. The team also uncovered pieces of a turbah, a clay disc that may have been used by Shia Muslims during prayer to symbolize the earth.
The turbah is thought to date to the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries, when the town of Fil’akovo was part of the Ottoman Empire. Older fortifications made of wooden palisades were found as well.

In the 4th century A.D. a remarkable series of decorated tombs were constructed in the cemetery in the town of Sopianae, in the Roman Province of Pannonia, the ruins of which survived under the ground and are situated in the current city of Pécs, in South Hungary. The burial chambers, chapels and mausoleum excavated on the site of the Sopianae cemetery form a complex that bears witness to an ancient culture and civilization that had a lasting impact. It is the richest collection of structural types of sepulchral monuments in the northern and western Roman provinces reflecting a diversity of cultural sources. These monuments are important both structurally and architecturally as they were built above ground and served as both burial chambers and memorial chapels. They are also significant in artistic terms because of their richly decorated murals of outstanding quality depicting Christian themes.The Roman cemetery was found by archaeological excavations which began two centuries ago. Subsequent excavations revealed that the early Christian complex of monuments provides exceptional evidence of a historical continuity that spanned the turbulent centuries from the decline of the Roman Empire in the 4th century to the conquest of the Frankish Empire in the 8th century. Sixteen structures constitute the World Heritage property, although the cemetery includes over five hundred more modest graves which cluster around the major monuments.
