Stargazing at Earth and Sky Ltd, Lake Tekapo, New Zealand
Time-lapse animations taken by Maki Yanagimachi around Lake Tekapo, NewZealand (now the heart of the largest IDA recognized Dark Sky Reserve: the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve). Most of these animations are taken from Mt.John University Observatory, the University of Canterbury's premier astronomical research facility
Lake Tekapo - New Zealand
Lake Tekapo is an incredible place to visit. It's located on the South Island of New Zealand, and is surrounded by amazing mountainous landscapes. It's also part of the gold level status Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, which means it has some of the darkest night skies in the world, and is a perfect place for stargazing and to see our own Milky Way Galaxy.
Each year I travel to Lake Tekapo to explore the area and find new and interesting locations to photograph and time-lapse, and this short film is a collection of some of my favourite time-lapses from the area.
A big thanks goes out to Earth and Sky and the University of Canterbury Mt John Observatory for allowing me access to Mount John at night.
Earth & Sky, Lake Tekapo.
The ever changing landscape up at Lake Tekapo, can be a good thing or in this case, can leave a sour pip in the mouth of many.
Yesterday (6th April 2019) i shot up to Lake Tekapo to check out the latest edition.
Thought i would now add this video to my You Tube channel, had it and still have it on my facebook account, with over 8,500 views.
Earth & Sky have somehow managed to get building consent and build a concrete eye sore right in front of the Lake Tekapo Tavern, all the shops and also the motel block.
Supposedly this land in front of these complexes was not suppose to have anything built there but take a look for yourself, the view they had, has now more or less been removed.
Maybe in comments, we may see some words from shop owners but it really makes one wonder, who loaded whose pocket to get this building approval under way??
As many would know, up on Mt John is the observatory, with plenty of room, with a cafe and of course with domes and sky perving equipment. Absolutely superb location, with NO obstructions as in buildings to block their view but for something that will mainly be used for night viewing, this building as removed the fantastic views throughout the day from al the shoppers, tourists and owners of the buildings.
Not only myself, but many others i know who frequent Lake Tekapo, have not gone up to the top of Mt John since they introduced a road toll.
Must also mention something else that happened only weeks ago up at Lake Tekapo. If you are up there in the dark of the night, you will notice Tekapo at night is absolutely dark, even though it is night time, there is absolutely no lighting. Its quite odd as we all know night brings darkness but shit, it is as dark as having your eyes closed. But over the far side of the lake, was parked up on the waters edge, when i noticed someone sneaking through the trees. It looked like they were using their mobile phone torch, sneaking through and hiding behind the trees. I got in my car and quietly turned my car around and hit high beam then tried to spot the stalker/peeping tom.
Unfortunately no sight as i heard someone scarper away.
So for those camping up there, just be very weary, darkness brings out the creeps of society.

February 18, 2015 - Driving through New Zealand's Canterbury region from Christchurch to the crystal blue waters and brilliant night sky of Lake Tekapo, before continuing south to Queenstown the following day. Lake Tekapo New Zealand
During our 1 day layover in Christchurch, New Zealand, we made a quick decision to rent a car and go to Lake Tekapo - one of New Zealand's most renowned places to visit. It took us around 3 hours to get there and by that time the sun was already going down. Unfortunately, I have no timelapse of the Milky Way (just a few pictures). Regardless of that, it was a memorable experience. Being as smart as we were on that day, we haven't booked any accommodation and by the time we got there, everything was full. That was my first time sleeping in a car and with outside temperatures dropping to -3 °C / 27 °F, it wasn't very pleasant.
This is also my first video using shots from a newly bought Mavic Air - and I have a lot to learn in that field as you can see.
Please let me know in the comments what did you (not) like about the video. See you on the next one.
