Lifou, New Caledonia
Yesterday we visited Easo on Lifou Island in the Loyalty Islands Province of New Caledonia, a French territory in the South Pacific Ocean.
It was wonderful to swim with sea turtles, and bathe in tropical waters as warm as a bath tub. There were beautiful corals and brightly coloured tropical fish to see. If there is a paradise on Earth I suspect it might look like Lifou.
Lifou is a popular cruise port, with many cruises coming from Australia. The most common port-of-call is Easo; the ships anchor just off the island and tender passengers ashore, being too large for the wharf there. Lifou is known for its snorkeling

Lifou [lifu] is a commune of France in the Loyalty Islands Province of New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean.
Lifou is made up of Lifou Island, the largest and most heavily populated of the Loyalty Islands, its smaller neighbour Tiga Island, and several uninhabited islets in between these two. All these islands lie among the Loyalty Islands, 190 km (120 mi) to the northeast of New Caledonia's mainland. At 1,146 km2 (442 sq mi), Lifou Island is the largest atoll in the world.
The town of Wé, on Lifou Island, is the administrative centre of the commune of Lifou as well as the provincial seat of the Loyalty Islands Province.
The first Europeans to have contact with Lifouans were whalers, who had very limited, and certainly not friendly, communications with them. Sandalwood traders also came to New Caledonia around 1841.
By the mid-19th century, there were Anglican missionaries at work on Lifou, although there had been natives and Polynesian immigrants doing religious work before then. In 1843, French Catholic missionaries arrived on Lifou; shortly afterward, the Anglicans and Catholics became involved in a religious war that lasted until the French takeover of Lifou in 1864. The missionaries even established a school on Lifou Island, and from 1840 to the early 20th century taught most of the population to read. They did enough religious work that in 1998 the Lifouans were referred to as devout Christians.
Lifou is a popular cruise port, with many cruises coming from Australia. The most common port-of-call is Easo; the ships anchor just off the island and tender passengers ashore, being too large for the wharf there. Lifou is known for its snorkeling.

Radiance of the Seas in Lifou
On a Radiance of the Seas cruise we stopped at Lifou in the Loyalty Islands of New Caledonia. The tropical port seemed to be alive in the heat with lots of colourful plant life and butterflies. This is just a short video of Radiance of the Seas seen from the top of a hill near Easo Beach.
Kuto, Ile Des Pins, New Caledonia
The Isle of Pines—Île des Pins in French, or Kunié to New Caledonia's indigenous Melanesian people—is located 60 kilometers (37 miles) southwest of Grande Terre, the main island of the archipelago that makes up New Caledonia. With less than 2,000 inhabitants spread across its 152-square-kilometer (59-square-mile) size, Île des Pins brims with enough natural beauty to have earned it the nickname “l'île la plus proche du paradis” (the island closest to paradise). Its principal draws are its beaches, especially those around the bays of Kuto and Kanumera, where one can swim with colorful tropical fish, while the island’s name, bestowed upon it by the English captain James Cook, refers to its abundant soaring pine trees, which can reach up to 60 meters (197 feet) in height. The official administrative area (and only village) is Vao in the south, but the port of Kuto serves as the island’s chief gateway and offers accommodation, restaurants, shops and more. Isle of Pines was a penal colony for some 3,000 political prisoners from Paris in the 1870s, and traces of that history are visible in the shape of overgrown prison ruins.

Island life in Easo New Caledonia and Cave Jumping (Cruise Vacation Stop 35)
Ahh beautiful island living. Todays adventures take me to Easo in New Caledonia. I find a fun snorkeling spot called Aquarium of Jinek. I hike to the little Church of Notre Dame de Lourdes and capture some stunning views. I then find a local hot spot. A cave I hike down to in the jungle and then find a cave pool i do some cave jumping. Lots of fun. Ending the day eating local lobster and rice on a palm leaf plate.
Join me on my travels as i put down the stethoscope and experience life.

One of our stops on P&O's Pacific Jewel was Lifou in New Caledonia. This video shows you how picturesque the place is. Just check out the colour of the water. There are no filters on my camera and I haven't touched it up. It is 100% natural colour. A great place to visit.
