We are still travelling the Gisborne region of New Zealand, otherwise known as Eastland, Tairawhiti Gisborne, the East Coast of New Zealand or the East Cape. The first stop on our East Cape travel itinerary is the East Cape Lighthouse where it is the one of the first places to see the first sunrise in the world. The East Cape Lighthouse is a New Zealand lighthouse you can’t miss.
Next, we check out the “historic tree” otherwise known as the oldest pohutakawa tree in New Zealand, the pohutukawa tree in Te Araroa. After that, it’s just a few awesome beaches and bays in the East Cape including Waihau Bay.
So what do you think of this lighthouse in New Zealand? Would you add the East Cape Lighthouse to your East Cape travel itinerary? LUK in the comments.

Cyclone Pam - Gisborne-East Coast
THE remnants of tropical Cyclone Pam arrived in the Gisborne-East Coast district overnight and the worst of the savage weather system could still come later today. Cyclone Pam was re-classified as an intense extra tropical cyclone at around 5am today. More than 40 people have been evacuated from their homes in this region so far.
“It is expected to maintain its intensity or intensify slightly as it moves southeast at about 30 kilometres an hour,” said MetService meteorolgist William Nepe. “The low-pressure system is expected to lie about 150km east of East Cape at midday today and just northeast of the Chatham Islands at midday Tuesday.” The Gisborne civil defence group emergency operations centre was activated overnight. At a media briefing just after 8am today, Gisborne Civil Defence emergency management controller Peter Higgs said the rain since last night was just a warm-up. “We expect the wind and the sea to start rising by midday today and the severity of the event to be greatly lessened by later tonight. “We are still expecting winds of between 120 and 130kmh and 130 to 150 kmh north of Tolaga Bay,” he said. Up to 200mm of rain is expected in the next 6-8 hours, with higher falls in the ranges. “We are not expecting the rainfall to cause major issues because this will be a relatively short-lived event,” Mr Higgs said. All schools in the Gisborne region are closed today and many businesses in the city have opted to stay closed.
The forecast sea swell of nine metres north of Tolaga and 7 to 8 metres south of Tolaga Bay is one of the major concerns for Civil Defence. “We expect to see SH35 cut at Tatapouri at some stage today by the heavy seas. “The Nuhiti Road, north of Anaura Bay was closed as a precautionary measure yesterday and most of the residents have moved out of their homes to stay with friends and families,” Mr Higgs said. Ten people were evacuated from Te Araroa this morning. “Residents at the start of the East Cape Road, parallel to the sea, are being accommodated in the township’s Hinerupe Marae.” Tokomaru Bay police officer Constable Brian Leach said a number of residents in the bay have self-evacuated. “Some have gone down to Gisborne and others to stay at the local marae. “The swell here is about 1.5 to 2 metres at present,” Constable Leach said mid-morning. Another six people have been evacuated from Mangatuna, north of Tolaga Bay, where the river has risen five and a half metres in about four hours. “The Hikuwai River is now at 13 metres, and it overflows the highway at 12 metres,” said Mr Higgs. There are some small road closures in parts of the district. “So far our infrastructure has not sustained any significant damage,” he said. Air New Zealand flights to and from Gisborne were affected this morning. A flight due to depart for Auckland at 9.20am and a scheduled arrival from Wellington, due at 9am, were both cancelled.

Lottin Point to Opotiki via East Cape Lighthouse - North Island Roadtrip Vlog Day 12
Day 12 of our 42-day trip around the North Island of New Zealand and we leave Lottin Point to head the rest of the way around East Cape and into the Bay of Plenty region to Opotiki. First though, we head out to East Cape Lighthouse.
Along the way, we stopped at:
-Te Araroa (Fuel stop on the way in)
-East Cape Lighthouse
-Te Araroa again to see Te Waha O Rerekohu – The Oldest Pohutukawa Tree
-Hicks Bay
-Oruaiti Beach
-Waihau Bay
-Te Kaha
-Opotiki
We stayed at the Ranui Motel. It is a bit dated, but comfortable and the owners are very friendly and helpful!
For lunch, we had the last of our remaining food from Yoko Sushi in Gisborne and then for dinner we got takeaway from Kashish Indian Cuisine, a rather unique Indian restaurant in the old Masonic Lodge. It's a bit of a labyrinth in there!

1. The First Sunrise in the World
Being the first city in the world to see the sun, Gisborne is the place to get out of bed early and find a suitable spot to see the first rays of light of a new day. Further north the sacred Mt Hikurangi, a non-volcanic 1752m high peak, standing tall over the Raukumara Range, is the first place to catch the dawn. Enjoy the statues of Maui and other of the demi-god's family, on your way to the summit. Drive 190 km north of the city, to East Cape, the most eastern point of the country, another choice for viewing daybreak, while the historic Lighthouse there is worth a visit even during the daytime.
2. The First European Landfall
On 6th October 1769, Nicholas Young, a surgeon's boy on the Endeavour, sighted land and that is remembered today with the name of Young Nick's Head on the south of Poverty Bay. The ship, captained by James Cook, made landfall on Kaiti Beach on the Gisborne waterfront. Today the Cook Landing Site National Historic Reserve marks the spot, but it is no longer on the waterfront. The former waterline is now a mere dip in the ground in front of the memorial.
3. Museums
The Tairawhiti Museum is a social and cultural collection of Taonga (treasure) of the East Cape region, with collections including Fine art, Photographs and Oral history. There are also collections of surfboards, Maori Taonga, and a display called Watersheds that tells of the struggles and endeavour involved in establishing the area. Wyllie Cottage is the oldest surviving European house in Gisborne and includes the stories of the people who have made this cottage their home in bygone years.
4. Checking out the Countryside
One of New Zealand's nine best walks is the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk, a 46 km trail that will usually take 4-5 days to complete through native bush with giant trees, past isolated beaches, and in the depths of historical sites. The natural flora of the area includes more than 650 natives, many that are rare. Native birds are abundant as and both of New Zealand's bat species (both rare) are found here. Hunting, with permits, is welcomed to assist keeping deer, pigs and possums under control. Rere Falls is a popular place to visit and the Rere Rockslide is one of the greatest natural activities in the country. A naturally formed 60m long slide provides a wild ride for swimmers with tubes, boogie boards or rubber mattresses.
5. Eating & Drinking Poverty Bay
It is surprising to many people to learn that Gisborne is the third largest wine region in New Zealand, and the wines produced there are not the usual wines either. Chardonnay is the most grown, but then the runner-up wine is Gewürztraminer, a relatively unknown variety. Ciders are also produced in the area. Local wines can be sampled at the Gisborne Wine Centre. The Harvest Cidery began making cider from their own apples in 1989, and today make a range of quality ciders.

This place is called the Eastcape and at this endpoint, you can see the world's first sunrise at a beautiful spot with a lighthouse. It’s really another great experience to add to that New Zealand bucket list!

In this case, the drive all the way up to the stunning EastCape which could be easily forgotten about. During this road trip, amazing landmarks and sights blow away the minds of nature lovers and travelers and make you realize how beautiful our planet really is.
This amazing experience is pretty cheap and is more free-to-explore orientated! Besides the expense on fuel and accommodation, there isn’t much to spend your money on here. But the reward in experience is huge. Meaning that it’s more a natural experience instead of an experience filled with paid tourist attractions. You will be very isolated at some points and really need to think about bringing enough food, fuel, …. before passing the long mountain drives.
This EastCape road trip is such a cool way to explore New Zealand North Island. During the ride, get out of that van, away from the beaten path and explore isolated wild beaches, unique viewpoints, nature tracks and more.

Finally, in the video, we end up at the beautiful East Cape after a rough drive. Look at the world map and you are situated at the most Eastern point possible to stand in the North of New Zealand.
From here, watch the first sunrise that greets the world (get up early enough!). There’s a lighthouse that marks the spot with over 800 stairs to climb. The end experience is so much worth it and will take your breath away! This really is one of those New Zealand North Island must-see activities that really add up to your travel experience.
By the way, this is just a small piece of the amazing pacific coast highway you can road trip. I drove all the way from Mount Maunganui (Bay of Plenty region) down to the South (Wellington) and took a ferry to the South Island. It’s all so easy with so many things to do and see in New Zealand on your way! Grab yourself some kind of travel van and start to explore your freedom now, it’s possible!
