Ship moving Pilot Bay, Mt Maunganui, Tauranga, NZ- Video1
Pilot Bay is one of Hawke's Bay Region's premier destinations – a beautiful sheltered beach which sits on the edge of Tauranga Harbour and beneath Mount Maunganui’s towering mountain ‘Mauao’.
This bay runs along the southwestern side of Mount Maunganui’s peninsula and is sheltered from the open ocean. Small waves gently lap at the shore here as the tide flows in and out, providing calm swimming conditions all year round.
This is a great spot for families with young children who want to splash about in the water without getting knocked off their feet by big waves. Hunt for shells, build sandcastles, draw pictures in the sand and enjoy swimming with your little ones here.
Pilot Bay’s sandy beach gradually rises upwards to become a wide, flat grass reserve which extends back towards the main road, The Mall. A wooden boardwalk runs parallel to this road so you can stroll the full length of Pilot Bay to reach the base of Mauao and the start of the mountain’s popular 3.4km base track.
A row of stately Norfolk Pine trees line Pilot Bay, helping provide a picture-perfect scene for cruise passengers as they sail through the harbour entrance and berth at the nearby port.
Pilot Bay is the best place to view these magnificent cruise ships up close. Bring a picnic dinner down to this beach and watch them depart on a warm summer’s evening. The largest ships attract huge crowds of locals who cheer and wave goodbye to passengers as they sail away.
There are plenty of barbeques and picnic tables for you to use along Pilot Bay, and cafes and ice-cream parlours are also just a short walk away.
Kayaks and other water sports equipment are available for hire right on the shore here. This is a great place to launch your jet ski, stand up paddle board or watch waka ama crews train for their next regatta. Pilot Bay is also a popular location for triathlons and other open water swimming events during summer months.
A boat ramp and limited parking for boat trailers is available down the Mauao end of Pilot Bay, and public toilets can be found about half way along The Mall.
Pilot Bay is a picturesque place to relax in the sun, enjoy the harbour views and watch the world go by. With stunning scenery, clear blue water and plenty to see and do, it sums up everything we love about the Bay of Plenty.

'Tauranga Moana is Awesome 2'
Following on from the original 'Tauranga Moana is Awesome', this is the 2nd compilation of some of my best moments in the past 6 months or so. As mentioned in the video, a marine mammal permit allows me to get up close, to not just whales and dolphins, but also seals that require a 20m distance when hauled out on land. For more information regarding interacting with marine life, go to:
When I was young, I used to watch a lot of animal documentaries on T.V with many of which being filmed from the African plains, the Great Barrier reef or more extreme locations such as the Antarctic. Sadly, some of the animals that I saw on those tv shows have since dissapeared or face extinction and little did I know at the time that New Zealand had almost lost its entire Southern Right whale population during the days of whaling which saw the numbers dwindle from around 40,000 to just over 100. (Yes, thats 100!)
Thankfully, times have changed and numbers within certain species are slowly recovering, which is why it is important that we know what to do should we come across them whilst we're out there on the water. Just like us, they need their rest as well as time to feed and something as simple as boat noise can affect those crucial moments. Here in New Zealand, we are fortunate that some of this marine life, from the tiny Hectors dolphins to the mighty Orca and even the larger Southern Right whale, can be seen up close by simply standing on a rock and enjoying the moment. At times, this is often the best way to see them.
My goal is that this video will reach a child, in the same way that it did for me many many years ago, and engage a kind of magic that will perhaps see them become future protectors (or kaitiaki) of our oceans and waterways, and carry on the hope of seeing an increase in numbers among these whales and dolphins. If we all simply do 'our bit' in conservation, we WILL see bigger numbers of these spectacular animals that call New Zealand 'home'.
This video would not have been possible if it weren't for the support of many people and organisations and I'd like to give special thanks to an incredible lady who has backed me over the years and allowed me to 'get out amongst it' to capture these moments for everyone out there, including the schools and groups that I talk to, to be able to enjoy. I will be forever grateful.
Be Good to the Ocean.
Kia Kaha.
NOTE: If this video is to be used for anything, please be sure to keep the beginning speech in the video for educational purposes to bring about more awareness in keeping these animals safe. Thank you.

Winter Kayak Fishing trip Tauranga NZ
Some great footage of my kayak fishing trip with Dave, Estelle & Bobby from Canoe & Kayak Bay of Plenty (Mt Manganui). Dave & Estelle have just moved here from the UK and this was their first NZ kayak fishing experience...Staff member Bobby showed us his local spots which produced fish for everyone. Soft plastics and bait were all working well showing that the Bay of Plenty is a great spot for winter fishing... June 2011
