Hiking the Rugged East Coast Trail in Newfoundland, Canada
At the far eastern edge of North America lies a hidden gem. The East Coast Trail has been in development for 24 years, yet some sections make you feel like the first explorer to arrive as you are taken by natures majesty. Getting to hike there felt like a real opportunity to showcase a place and a trail that more people MUST know about. Just spend a few minutes talking with the dedicated crew of people behind the trail and you will know there’s something special there. And then when you actually step out onto that rocky coastal trail, you’ll be even more surprised.
The East Coast Trail is about 300 kilometres long and follows the rugged east coast from St. Johns down the Avalon Peninsula. There are some truly unique features, such as The Spout, where a geyser-like eruption happens every 15 seconds. There are hundreds of waterfalls cascading into the ocean, arches, and towers. Throw in some fresh seafood (including the raw scallop that served as my birthday cake) and you've got yourself one heck of a hiking trip—it's all remarkable.
Newfoundland was amazing and getting to hike the East Coast Trail and meet the people along the way was a big highlight of my year. I hope you enjoy this episode of Trackin' Dirt and that it inspires you to potentially make the journey yourself!

Hiking in Eastern Newfoundland - East Coast Trail, Trinity, Bonavista, Elliston
I spent a month driving around Newfoundland doing take hikes and overnight backpacking trips. I started in St. John’s and went up the east coast hiking the best coastal trails I could find. This island is very remote and I had most of the trails to myself. Newfoundland has some of the best coastal scenery I’ve ever seen. I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

East Coast Trail 2019 - Part 1
Hello! Hiya! Welcome!
So my name is Sara, and sometime in August I set a very... very... ambitious goal to do the East Coast Trail in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. First off, I would like to disclose I had no idea what I was doing, considering it was my first thru-hike. I didn't intend on doing the hike alone, but that's okay cause things always have a way of working themselves out! So anyways, I knew that I really really wanted to do it, so I just went for it... I did my research, bought my gear, talked to others etc. Least to say, it ended up going better than I expected (especially thankful to my new friends), although there were definitely learning curves along the way.
By far doing this trip alone was the most exhilarating accomplishment I have ever achieved. So please do enjoy Part 1 of the ECT, and if you have any questions feel free to give me a shout!
Keep an eye out for Part 2 (subscribe??), ft. more beautiful landscapes, me crying :) lol and other background footage.
Thanks for watching, and many thanks to the ECT for everything I cannot put into words or a video.
With much love,
Sara - your hiker trash

because theres nothing more heart-stopping, mind-bending, awe-inspiring, soul-fulfilling,
than out among the trees, colliding with the sea breeze, tripping on rocks and roots, with no pressure to please, channeling the most amount of energy,
only to feel like me,
whole-heartedly

Maintained by the East Coast Trail Association and located primarily on public lands, the trail traces the east coast of Newfoundland along the Atlantic Ocean. The trail passes through many small coastal towns nested in the bays of the Avalon Peninsula. The trail sections run from Portugal Cove, to Cape St. Francis, through St. John's and continues south as far as Cappahayden.[1]
Major attractions include the Spout, a natural water spout created by wave action along the rocky coast, coastal barachois formations, a natural sea arch, and a 50 metres (160 ft) suspension bridge near the abandoned community of La Manche. The trail also passes through Cape Spear, the easternmost point in North America.
