Cycling East Gippsland Rail Trail
Cycling East Gippsland Rail Trail is a 4-min 720p hi-def video showing a one and a half day 94km ride in May 2016, from Bairnsdale via Bruthen and Nowa Nowa to Orbost. Along the way we stopped for lunch at the Blue Bee Cafe in Bruthen, and stayed overnight in Motel units at Nowa Nowa. Bairnsdale can be reached by train from Melbourne.

The East Gippsland Rail Trail is a rail trail located in East Gippsland in Victoria, Australia. The trail is a popular cycling route, beginning in Bairnsdale and extending to Orbost, following the route of the former Orbost railway line. The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway was opened in 1916 to serve the agricultural and timber industry, and required numerous substantial bridges because of the nature of the terrain. Due to the decline in traffic and heavy operating costs, the line was finally closed in August 1987 and the track infrastructure removed in 1994.

Seashore Life of East Gippsland - nature of Croajingolong
This slideshow highlights of some of the amazing seashore creatures found in Croajingolong National Park. They were encountered along the far east coast of Victoria on an ecotour with Gippsland High Country Tours. Images were kindly provided by P & T Bridle and include a few land-based creatures as well! Under the guidance of Alan Monger from the Marine Research Group we investigated the rocky shoreline and paddled in rock pools at Point Hicks and at Bastion Point, Mallacoota. All data collected adds to knowledge of species distribution. The creatures we discovered during our survey were incredibly varied and beautiful, especially for cooler southern waters. Sadly work has now commenced at Bastion Point on a controversial ocean access ramp, that once completed will see the loss of some of the rocky reef and rock-pools at this site forever. Illegal Rainforest Logging, East Gippsland
GECO volunteers stumbled upon an area of rainforest on the Errinundra Plateau that was being logged illegally. They submitted a report and lobbied the Environment Minister, until the machinery was withdrawn one week later. Vicforests continues to log areas of valuable forest with very little public scrutiny. GECO calls for Vicforests to be prosecuted for illegal rainforest logging.
Cycling Gippsland Plains Rail Trail 2017
Cycling Gippsland Plains Rail Trail 2017 is a 5-min 720p hi-def video showing Andrew and I cycling along the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail from Traralgon to Stratford in April 2017. Note that the Rail Trail starts north of Traralgon East, about 5km from Traralgon. We used our free Seniors Rail Pass to travel to Traralgon and later back from Stratford. There are plenty of places along the Rail Trail to stop for a coffee or to have lunch. You are advised however that some cafes are not open on a Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. As I was filming the ride to make this video, we took 2 days to cycle the 65 km Rail Trail and we stayed one night at Heyfield in lovely motel units at Broadbent's Motor Inn.

Railway Crossing , South Gippsland Highway , Cranbourne ( abandoned/disused ) VIC
This is the South Gippsland Highway railway Crossing in Cranbourne on the abandoned south Gippsland line . This line is closed beyond Cranbourne station which is just before the crossing. This crossing hasn’t seen a train since 1999 . Footage and photos taken by me in February and July 2019.
This crossing has :
A Westinghouse hybrid bell ( this replaced another hybrid which replaced a teardrop bell in the 1990s )
Westinghouse crossarms on the south western signal (with the junction box cover torn out exposing the wiring )
A earlier type of McKenzie and Holland crossarms on the south eastern and north eastern signals ( with no junction box covers , also part of the bracket on the north eastern signal has snapped off )
A later type of Mck&h crossarms on the north western signal ( the upper section still has its junction box cover where as the lower section also still has it but it is falling off and being held on by a screw )
Westinghouse marked LED lights on the south western signal
A Westinghouse incandescent marked light on the north eastern signal ( this signal used to have 2 lights but one of them got knocked off and hit by a truck ( my guess ) and also dented some signage and fencing )
Unmarked older style Westinghouse lights ( maybe later style Mck&h lights ) on the north western signal
Marked McKenzie and Holland incandescent lights on the south eastern signal
Earlier style unmarked bases on north eastern , western and south eastern signals
Later style unmarked base on the signal with the bell

2 graffitied relay cases , the larger one is actually not original and would have been installed when the newer LED signal got installed, there used to be another smaller relay case with a test switch next to the small one , a concrete block is where it used to be.
Between February and April 2019 one of the large RAILWAY signs on the north eastern side of the crossing got removed , I have no idea why this happened
The rail line has been ripped out of the road and in the median strip
This crossing was installed with different signals in the 1960s before the Highway was duplicated in the 1970s , when this happened I’m guessing some of the equipment was reused. The soith western signal looks very new and that because it was installed after 1999. There’s a photo of the crossing from around 2001 and it had a different signal . This signal had a Westinghouse hybrid bell and either later Mck&h or Westinghouse crossarms and lights . This signal was also leaning badly at the time and I’m guessing that it eventually fell down and they put a new one in its place.
This crossing is one the South Gippsland line which closed many years ago in stages. In July 1993 the regular passenger services to leongatha closed and the only trains that ran past Nyora were steamrail tours , and when they used freight train to removed the line past leongatha . But the sand train to the AGM siding in between Lang Lang and Nyora was still running . The trains would serve the AGM factory in Spotswood. In 1995 the line from Dandenong to Cranbourne was electrified and metro trains now run on it . There has been a push to reinstate passenger services to leongatha or extend the line to Cranbourne east because of population growth , as of 2019 this hasn’t happened. Unfortunately in January of 1998 the last trains ran and that marked the end of regular services beyond Cranbourne and the start of the mothballing of the line between Cranbourne and Nyora in April 1998 saw that last time a steam train used the crossings at Cranbourne and even on the entire line . It happened when there was a transfer of K190 from korumburra to Newport . In December of 1999 saw the last times that the line between Nyora and Cranbourne was ever used . It was used for a transfer of Redhen Railcar and Superchock units from Nyora to Bendigo. This crossing has operated a couple times after that in the 2000s , there’s video somewhere but I haven’t seen it . Th other signalised Crossings on the line between Cranbourne and Nyora got there signals ripped out between 2012 and 2014 . There are e crossings with signals stil, there at Bena , Korumburra and leongatha but they are falling apart with the one at bena having nothing but the poles , some signage and a unlocked relay case.
