Beijing: Ju Yong Guan Gate @ the Great Wall of China 2016
This was actually a trip made in Nov 2016 and is a merging of the 9 short videos that I uploaded back in 2016. Just thought it would be easier to view this climb up the wall as a single video rather than 9.
At the beginning of the video, we decided to scale the steeper grade on the left side.
Note, the tower on the left side is not the top of the wall. It is only 1/4 of the way to the top. The very top cannot be seen from here.
Here is a link to the map of the trail:
Tower 14 is what can be seen on the left side.

Jiayuguan Fortress: China's greatest pass under heaven
Dubbed China’s greatest pass under heaven, the Jiayuguan Pass has been the anchor of the westernmost point of the Great Wall in Ming Dynasty, having served as a passageway for armies, merchants and envoys in the old days. Today, officials are aiming to transform the old steel production town into a tourist destination, benefiting from the launch of a high-speed rail route in 2014.

China, Silk Road - Jiayuguan pass
Photographer:Samuel Magal (samuel@sites-and-photos.com) Among the passes on the Great Wall, Jiayuguan is the most intact surviving ancient military building. The pass is also known by the name the First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven, which is not to be confused with the First Pass Under Heaven, a name for Shanhaiguan at the east end of the Great Wall near Qinhuangdao, Hebei.

Jiayuguan Pass - Cửa Ải Gia Dục Quan & Overhanging Great Wall

A Weekend in Jiayuguan
A Record of a weekend I spent in Jiayuguan with Kieran and Beth, as well as the previous week going around Gansu province with Tom and our school on a school trip.
Jiayuguan is home to the far end of the Great Wall of China and also served as an opportunity to finally go on a camel in the Gobi desert!

Jiayuguan Fort — Westernmost Ming Great Wall Garrison.
Jiayu Pass is not only the western starting point of the Ming Great Wall, but also a vital pass on the ancient Silk Road. It's the joining place of the cultures of the Silk Road and the Great Wall (along with Dunhuang, which has some Han Dynasty Great Wall relics).
In the Ming Dynasty Jiayu Pass was a vital area for defense against attack from the northwest. The Great Wall was built across this Gobi Desert pass. Jiayu Pass gets its name the First and Greatest Pass under Heaven for its strategic, commanding position and grand presence.
Built with Loess: In the Gobi Desert, Jiayuguan's Great Wall is not like other famous sections near Beijing, which are built with grey bricks and big stone slabs. This section is mainly built with loess. The loess soil was tamped together in layers, making the wall very solid. Each layer is 14 cm thick on average. The wall outside the fortress is one of the highest remaining parts at about 6 meters high.
Jiayuguan's fortress is quite impressive, especially considering its barren surroundings. There is a two-storey watchtower on each corner. It has a bailey with three storied-buildings with three-tiered gable-and-hip roofs, inner and outer walls, two gatehouses, a moat, and beacon towers. The bailey has a perimeter of 640 meters and an area of 25,000 square meters.
The Hanging Great Wall
The Hanging Great Wall in Shiguan Gorge is 8.4 km north from Jiayu Pass. This Great Wall fortification was built by Li Han, another official of Gansu's Suzhou, in 1540 (the 19th year of Ming Emperor Jiajing). Partially overhanging the north of the gorge, it seems like a hanging arm, so it's also known as the Badaling of the West.

The Great Wall Of China - Juyongguan Pass ,Beijing ,China
Juyongguan Great Wall is one of the three most famous passes along the Great Wall of China, together with Jiayuguan and Shanhaiguan. 37 miles (60 km) from downtown Beijing. Juyong Pass was a solid stronghold encircling a valley, which was the northern direct access to Beijing in ancient times. Situated in a valley surrounded by mountains on two sides, it has long been a military stronghold.
The total length of the Great Wall of China built in different dynasties is 21,196.18 kilometers.
It was first built in the Spring and Autumn Period (770 – 476 BC) and Warring States Period (476 – 221 BC) by Yan State as a fortification, and was linked to the Great Wall of China in the Southern and Northern Dynasties (386 – 589).
Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644), ordered the pass to be rebuilt to protect the northern borders from Mongol invasions. The extant pass was built then, and renovated in 1992.The mountain to the east is the 492 feet (150 meters) high Cuiping Mountain, with 4,921 feet (1,500 meters) of wall on its ridges.). Juyongguan Pass has two 'sub-passes,' one at the valley's south and the other at the north. The southern one is called Nan (pass) and the northern is called Badaling. There's no restaurant in the scenic area. You'd better take some snacks. Visitors always get sweating. So bringing some bottled water is also necessary. The best times to visit this section are April, May, September and October. In April and May, the green mountains are dotted with beautiful flowers.
There is a high platform called Cloud Platform in the center of the pass. It is a white marble construction. There used to be buildings on top of the platform, but they were destroyed by fire and only the marble base remains. An arched doorway penetrates the platform. On the walls of the doorway, statues of four heavenly gods and sutra scriptures were carved.
