Spotted lanternfly poses threat to trees and crops
Original airdate: 8/24/2017 | UPPER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. - A plant-hopping pest that sucks the sap out of trees and damages fruit crops is popping up in more places around the region, and some local businesses are worried.
The Clover Hill Vineyards and Winery, with locations in both Berks and Lehigh counties, is in the epicenter of where the spotted lanternfly was first discovered in the United States.
Clover Hill said several of the pests have been found in its vineyards, so workers have been busy putting on netting to protect the growing grapes from starlings.
The nets, however, won't stop the latest threat.
Within the last week, week-and-a-half, we saw our first lanternfly here, said owner John Skrip III.
The pest was first discovered in the U.S. in eastern Berks County in September 2014. Since then, it has spread elsewhere in Berks and to Lehigh, Northampton, Bucks, Chester, and Montgomery counties.

Rare Two Original Painted NECR GP38’s Leading CSO-4 (Railfanning the Hartford Line) 8/12/19
Ok so my little brother was gonna have his baseball team over for a party and my mom said you can do anything as long as your not home. So I decided to head up to Windsor since I haven’t been up there in a little while my main focus was for CSO-4. To my luck while I was on CTrail Train 4404 I saw CSO-4 getting ready to pull out. The power consisted of GP38s 3855, 3844 and 2011. For those who are in familiar with NECR or New England Central Railroad they used to have so much great power back in the early to late 2000s. Many of them are in different railroads across the United States but some have never left. Originally when the railroad began in the 1990s the got rebuilt GP38s painted in a blue and gold scheme which is very uncommon seen today. What may make them so special you ask??? It’s a scheme that many Railfans all over New England know very well. So many of the older generations of Railfans remember when NECR first started out. So now the only ones that are still painted in this scheme are 3844, 3845, 3850, 3855, and 3857, 3855 and 3844 shown in this video are common on CSOR for being on them for many of years. 3845, 3850 and 3857 operate mostly on NECR locals like in Palmer Massachusetts. It’s gonna be said when all of these veteran EMD horses get into a new coat of paint. No one knows when the last run will be if there is one. Personally I like it. So I got set up in the track 2 side to wait for CSO-4 to pass so I could get a great shot of the twin blue and gold GP38s if I haven’t mentioned yet CSOR 2011 is in G&W colors. So when I heard 3855s amazing RS3L I jumped for joy (figuratively). It was a more normal train that would see on a CSO-4 job however this was the only time I saw it this day and I was so happy. My other friend Turbocharged Rail Videos was gonna join me to see some of the CSO power but he didn’t see any. We caught only Amtrak’s and CTrail’s one thing to note is that in this video there is two P42s on a couple shuttles and that was because 107s HEP wasn’t working. Also something to note is how CTrail GP40-3H 6697 sounds. It sounds very sick and shoots up lots of smoke. While we were at Windsor, Vermonter 55 passed the station at 80mph which was awesome. So not much longer after that me and Turbocharged took 475 back to Wallingford where we saw a few more hours worth of trains. Our last train was Shuttle 479 and after it Departed we went home.
Okay I hope everyone enjoys the video and please give it a big thumbs up!!! And if your new hit the subscribe button and hit the bell to get notifications every time I make a new video. Also if you don’t like the video comment what I can do better to improve them. Ok HLR out!!!!

Jersey's Bridges Falling Down
The American Society of Civil Engineers issued New Jersey its infrastructure report card last week. If states were students, the Garden State would be flunking. Because it's broke. There's just a desperate need for additional funding to meet the needs and demands of New Jersey's infrastructure, says Mike Sears of the ASCE, adding that I think that was a common need through most of the categories we reviewed.
New Jersey got D's in seven out of thirteen categories reviewed, including roads, bridges, dams, and transit. The problem is that the state's pool of money for dealing with these problems is essentially broke -- two weeks from running dry. Legislators are working on a way to raise the gas tax but haven't found a way they can agree on yet. Our safety is what's at stake, and the economy, says Tracy Noble of AAA Mid-Atlantic, Because we're not going to be able to bring in new business when our roadways are so deficient they can't handle the commerce.
With the current gas tax set at 14.5 cents per gallon, Jersey drivers enjoy the second-cheapest gas in the nation. Lawmakers have suggested raising that tax by 23 cents, potentially making Jersey gas the seventh-most expensive in the US.

Central State Asylum for the Insane
Take an exclusive tour through the grounds and buildings of the abandoned Central State Mental Institution in Indianapolis first opened in November, 1848 with a total of five patients. At that time, the hospital consisted of one brick building situated on a large parcel of land of over 100 acres (0.40 km2) on Washington Street, west of downtown Indianapolis. In 1889 the hospital was renamed the Central Indiana Hospital for the Insane. After 1926 it was known as Central State Hospital, and by 1928, physicians cared for nearly 3,000 patients.
With a team of experts in the fields of psychology, the paranormal, and folklore history, filmmaker Dan T. Hall uncovers the mysteries left behind and forgotten when the facility closed its doors in 1994.
19th Century Reforms: Crash Course US History #15
In which John Green teaches you about various reform movements in the 19th century United States. From Utopian societies to the Second Great Awakening to the Abolition movement, American society was undergoing great changes in the first half of the 19th century. Attempts at idealized societies popped up (and universally failed) at Utopia, OH, New Harmony, IN, Modern Times, NY, and many other places around the country. These utopians had a problem with mainstream society, and their answer was to withdraw into their own little worlds. Others didn't like the society they saw, and decided to try to change it. Relatively new protestant denominations like the Methodists and Baptists reached out to the unchurched during the Second Great Awakening, and membership in evangelical sects of Christianity rose quickly. At the same time, Abolitionist societies were trying to free the slaves. Americans of the 19th century had looked at the world they were living in, and decided to change it. Women were heavily involved in
the abolitionist movement, and firsthand stories like freed slave Harriet Ann Jacobs' Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl were important to the cause:

BBC Mental A History of the Madhouse FULL DOCUMENTARY
Documentary which tells the fascinating and poignant story of the closure of Britains mental asylums. In the post-war period, 150,000 people were hidden away in 120 of these vast Victorian institutions all across the country. Today, most mental patients live out in the community and the asylums have all but disappeared. Through powerful testimonies from patients, nurses and doctors, the film explores this seismic revolution and what it tells us about societys changing attitudes to mental illness over the last sixty years.

End of the Line
This documentary short offers a nostalgic look at the steam locomotive as it passes from reality to history. In its heyday, the big smoke-belching steam engine seemed immortal. Now, powerful and efficient diesels are pushing the old coal-burning locomotives to the sidelines, and the lonely echo of their whistles may soon be a thing of the past.
