East London is a city on the southeast coast of South Africa in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality of the Eastern Cape province. The city lies on the Indian Ocean coast, largely between the Buffalo River and the Nahoon River, and hosts the country's only river port. Dozens of animal activists in the Eastern Cape are calling on the government to shut down the East London zoo. They say the living conditions at the facility are not conducive for wild animal's. For a second time in weeks they held a peaceful protest at the zoo. They have vowed to continue with their fight.

Advocates of animal rights on Saturday descended on the East London zoo, to protest against poor living conditions of the animals. The NSPCA has laid a cruelty charge against the zoo, but it was dropped by the magistrate's court last week, following reports that the animals' living conditions are bad.
