Land-based Whalewatching Sight at East Point, Saturna Island
A stunningly beautiful Capital Regional District park situated at the eastern end of Boundary Pass, and looking out over Georgia Strait in the Southern Gulf Islands, between Victoria and Vancouver. Part of The Whale Trail. The site is also the headquarters of SIMRES, the Saturna Island Marine Research Education Society. The iconic white structure in the video is the old Fog Alarm Building, which was saved from destruction by a heritage group. The two gentlemen in red jackets standing beside the building are a father and son from Victoria who had taken the ferry from Victoria for the express purpose of catching a glimpse of spotting whales in general, and Southern Resident Killer Whales in particular, which neither of them had ever seen
Land-based whalewatching is part of a growing trend for observing and appreciating whales in their natural environment. It is a perfect example of non-consumptive use- wit absolutely no impact on the whales themselved.
Orcas off East Point, Saturna Island, BC
Saw this pod of orcas cruise by the shore...they were so close I could've hit them with a rock! They proceeded to terrorize a gang of barking sea lions, and then just played around, jumping full out of the water and slapping their tails. Amazing sighting!
The Wildlife of Saturna Island - Shaw TV Saturna Island
Saturna Island is rich with wildlife... and this summer, Parks Canada is making it simpler to learn to learn about the critters that live on and around this Gulf Island. Shaw TV's Jen Muranetz has the story.
Two great locations from my recent boating trip to Gulf Islands, BC
For last weekend me and my wife packed the boat full of camping gear, picked up a couple of friends, and we went camping at Cabbage Island. We had a good relaxing time with some good fishing in between ;) On the way back we stopped at our favorite restaurant in Bennet Bay on Mayne Island. Here is some casual flying from the trip.
Thanks a whole bunch to LiftRC.com, Rotorgeeks.com, ParagonUAV.com and RaceKraft.com for helping me follow a dream

Saturna Island Escape
Another Desert Sun Entertainment video takes us to Saturna Island.
Alexandra and Jianni visited Saturna Island, staying at the Breezy Bay Bed and Breakfast on the south west side of the island, just a couple of miles from the Ferry at Lyall Harbour. Our bike route took us from there to the Saturna General Store, then through the hilly region to Church Cove and Winter Cove before heading along the long straight-away all the way to East Point. We stopped at Jodie's? Park and Rest just before the Bambi Crossing Sign for nice fresh water and a sucky candy. We caught some rays at beautiful sun-kissed shell beach. See the photos of the unusual rock formations surrounding East Point. Upon returning we enjoyed a nice meal at the Lighthouse Pub. On another outing we walked all the way to the vineyards from the General Store (extremely high hill up and down).

These amazing whales are easy to view from East Point on Saturna Island and are around frequently from April to October.

Friday of last week we went to Saturna Island to complete our four islands in four weeks tour!
Our first stop on Saturna Island was Saturna Wild Thyme Bus Cafe. This was where I got the idea to make stinging nettle lattes. I love stinging nettle, such a nourishing herb, very grounding and fortifying.
After we fueled up we headed out on our first hike to Narvaez Bay, Echo Bay and Monarch Head. It was a perfect day for slugs!
Reflecting back on the last year, especially because we saw humpback whales last year on Saturna, I am remembering the passing of granning, the matriarch of our resident orca j-pod. She was the world’s oldest orca whale, estimated to be as old at 105.
I had talked to Tom from B.C. whale tours about Granny’s passing. It took some time to confirm Granny’s passing. I asked Tom: What changes when the matriarch passes? The community will probably change. They will probably split into two like K-Pod did and two new matriarchs will emerg.
There was so much nettle waiting to be harvested on Saturna that day.
We tend to overestimate what will happen in a year and underestimate what will happen in five years. A lot has happened over this last year. Tim has really picked up his photography. Just like the orca whale pods we are experiencing shifts and changes in our lives.
The biggest change for me over the past year was also a shift in a community. I was listening to Brooke Thomas from the LIberated Body Podcast and she introduced me to my now sangha, Dharma Ocean. Through Dharma Ocean I found my teacher, Neil McKinlay here in Victoria B.C. Communities are important, they serve us as human beings.
What has changed for you over the last year? How have your communities changed?
Let us know in the comments what you would like us to get up to next week!
Thanks for subscribing and liking the video.
With gratitude, Melissa, Tim and Trinity

Killer Whales-Gulf Islands/Saturna Island-Cedar Valley Waldorf School Trip -7/8 Class
September 2011. The Cedar Valley Waldorf School went to the Gulf Islands in the Salish Sea for a start of school trip. This nice pod of 50 killer whales entertained twice at the same point of land in two days. A local resident standing near said that if the kids wold clap and cheer the whales would perform...and they did...Thanx Peter for a great time.
