The most important thing is - even if they will not become railway workers in the future, - they find a lot of friends here, they communicate and they learn the skills that could probably be useful for them in the future.

LEAD IN:
The Railway is one of the many things that holds a lot of mystique for children and adults alike.
Children love the sound of trains as they chug along on their journey, and many even dream of becoming train drivers when they grow up.
But for children in the Siberian town of Irktutsk, that dream can become a reality from the age of 11.
STORYLINE:
They all represent railroads and railway families from various parts of the country.
Ira Vasilchuk has come to the Olympics from the small town of Belogorsk in the Russian Far East.

Russia - The Pearl of Siberia (Baikal Lake)
After leaving Mongolia, we could start the legendary Transsiberian trip. This railway is crossing all Russia from West to East. We entered in Russia in Siberia, and it took us 36hours to reach Irkutsk from Ulaanbataar. The control at the Russian border took more than 8 hours, as the Russian police has to check the visas of the whole train.
The train is very comfortable. The room is shared between 4 people, there are bunk beds, a table, personal lights. There is no electric plug in the bedroom and you share 3 electric plugs with the entire wagon (40people). The toilets are clean, you have access to boiling water to make instant noodles, tea or coffee. This part of the trip is the only one during which we met foreigners in the train, as it’s an international train.
We staid 2 full days in Irkutsk. This city is small and lovely. There is a very nice atmosphere. We could feel that the culture was different from Mongolia and that we were kind of back in the western world, even though we were in Asia. For techno lovers, it’s interesting to know that Nina Kraviz is born there… but no one knows her here.
Irkustsk is located nearby “the Pearl of Russia”: the Baikal Lake. This lake is famous all over the world as it’s the biggest one on Earth (636km²). Every Russian dreams to go there someday, it’s a very touristic destination for Russian people. In winter the lake is completely frozen (it’s -25°) so people enjoy it a lot in summer. We booked a bus to go to the Olkhon Island, which is located on the lake.
We staid 3 days on the island, and here we felt back in Mongolia living conditions. No toilets, no showers, no roads. The only foreigners we could meet were Koreans, there are a lot of them here. But there were almost no Europeans or western people. Most of the tourists here are Russians and the legend said true: here, Russian people don’t speak any English. We have been lucky to meet very nice people who helped us to arrange a tour on the island, and invited us to diner and drink with them one night, even though we didn’t speak the same language.
The island is big and almost desert. There is only one village, and the rest is forest and beaches. The water of the lake is cold but we could see many kids swim in there. At night, the temperatures were very low as we were in the middle of Siberia. The food in Russia is pretty good, very diverse, but the portions are small, VERY SMALL.
The 3 days we spent on the island were great. The nature is awesome and it was a very special experience as we were surrounded by Russian people. We went back to Irkutsk, staid one night there, and then took the train again, for 41h, to go to Omsk…

Travelling the Trans-Siberian - life
From Moscow to the eastern borders of China, the world's longest railway line - the Trans-Siberian, stretches for more than 9,000 kilometres; a truly great railway journey - in this edition of Russian Life.
At midnight every other day, a Rossiya train leaves Moscow for a week-long trip to Vladivostok. It is an extraordinary trip and many come from far and wide to do it.
This is the longest train journey that one can make, said English tourist Robert Bird. And you just have to do it, because it's there! I'm happy sitting in the train, looking at the scenery, and going to places that I've never been to before. I just find it so fascinating!
It is a home away from home for hundreds of passengers who sleep, eat, enjoy the limited comfort and try to have a good time during their days on board the train.
Irina Savina, one of the train's conductors said:
Very few passengers do the whole journey from Moscow to Vladivostok in a single trip, and those who do should be prepared mentally and physically - a whole week on a train might not be easy. But we provide everything necessary to make it an enjoyable travel.
In the first and second classes, there are individual compartments that accommodate two and four passengers respectively.
This is a popular mode of transport for tourists and businessmen alike who shuttle between Russia's major cities on trains rather than planes.
There are dozens of stations between Moscow and Vladivostok allowing passengers to stretch their legs for a few minutes and stock up on food and drinks.
Factfile: The Trans-Siberian
* A first class ticket from Moscow to Vladivostok on a Rossiya train costs around 1000 euros, including daily meal service. The third class is 315 euros
* First class passengers can order their meals to be delivered in their compartments or have it at a dining car
* There's a hot shower in one of the train carriages. It costs 200 roubles (5 euros)
* Train personnel is helpful and attentive but doesn't always speak foreign languages
* All train schedules in Russia use Moscow time; the time difference between Moscow and Vladivostok is seven hours
Many tourists prefer to visit some of the most interesting cities along the track before continuing their Trans-Siberian journey.
Some of the most passionate travellers ride in the cheaper third class carriages: known as platzkart.
Here people from many different backgrounds mix together in an open carriage throughout their odyssey.
Inna Kryazhevskih who was travelling to Kirov said: A train journey is a good time to reflect on something, to think of the things we never have time for in our daily lives.
Dasha Kryazhevskih who was going the same way added: Sometimes you sleep a lot, sometimes you read, or do something creative - we made some toys and beaded jewellery while travelling on this train.
Vladimir Kosinov, the Train Master, said:
You can learn a lot about Russia by crossing it from Moscow to Vladivostok on this train. If you observe other passengers, especially Russians, if you get to know them then you'll understand many things about our way of life and the mysterious Russian soul.
Lots of people decide to stop in the historic Siberian city of Yekaterinburg and then a few days further down the line in Irkutsk where they can see Baikal, the world's deepest lake.
From there they can head south to Mongolia and China or continue their eastward journey to Vladivostok, Russia's main port city on the Pacific Ocean.
Whatever the destination, for those with a spirit for adventure, the Trans-Siberian trip is a Russian speciality not to miss.

During his trip to Amur Region, the President inspected the Amur Gas Processing Plant construction site and gave the command to start pouring concrete for the foundation.
The head of state was shown scale models of the Power of Siberia gas pipeline and the Amur Gas Processing Plant. Chairman of Gazprom Management Board, Alexei Miller, told Vladimir Putin about the deadlines and construction stages for the new plant and gas pipeline.
The Amur Gas Processing Plant, now under construction 15 kilometres from the town of Svobodny on the banks of the Zeya River, will be the largest Russian gas refinery and a major facility worldwide. It will play an important part in the technological chain of future natural gas deliveries to China via the Power of Siberia pipeline. The project will promote socioeconomic and industrial development in the Amur and other Far Eastern regions.
Construction has been progressing since October 2015; site preparation is currently being completed, and road, railway and river infrastructure are also being built. In addition, preparations are underway to build a residential area for about 3,000 employees.
While visiting the plant, Vladimir Putin took part in a videoconference and heard reports from Gazprom Dobycha Noyabrsk Director General Igor Krutikov from the Chayandinskoye oil, gas and condensate field in Yakutia that will ship gas to the Amur plant, and by Gazprom Transgaz Tomsk Director General Anatoly Titov, from a section of the Power of Siberia gas pipeline.

Russia/Lake Baikal:
Lake Baikal Baygal nuur, etymologically meaning, in Mongolian, the Nature Lake is a rift lake in Russia, located in southern Siberia, between Irkutsk Oblast to the northwest and the Buryat Republic to the southeast.Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world, containing roughly 20% of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water. With 23,615.39 km3 (5,670 cu mi) of fresh water, it contains more water than the North American Great Lakes combined. With a maximum depth of 1,642 m (5,387 ft),Baikal is the world's deepest lake. It is considered among the world's clearest lakes and is considered the world's oldest lake — at 25 million years. It is the seventh-largest lake in the world by surface area.
Like Lake Tanganyika, Lake Baikal was formed as an ancient rift valley, having the typical long crescent shape with a surface area of 31,722 km2 (12,248 sq mi). Baikal is home to thousands of species of plants and animals, many of which exist nowhere else in the world. The lake was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.It is also home to Buryat tribes who reside on the eastern side of Lake Baikal, rearing goats, camels, cattle, and sheep, where the mean temperature varies from a winter minimum of −19 °C (−2 °F) to a summer maximum of 14 °C (57 °F).
The region to the east of Lake Baikal is referred to as Transbaikalia, and the loosely defined region of the lake is sometimes known as Baikalia.
The Trans-Siberian Railway was built between 1896 and 1902. Construction of the scenic railway around the southwestern end of Lake Baikal required 200 bridges and 33 tunnels. Until its completion, a train ferry transported railcars across the lake from Port Baikal to Mysovaya for a number of years. The lake became the site of the minor engagement between the Czechoslovak legion and the Red Army in 1918. At times during winter freezes, the lake could be crossed on foot—though at risk of frostbite and deadly hypothermia from the cold wind moving unobstructed across flat expanses of ice. In the winter of 1920, the Great Siberian Ice March occurred, when the retreating White Russian Army crossed frozen Lake Baikal. The wind on the exposed lake was so cold, many people died, freezing in place until spring thaw. Beginning in 1956, the impounding of the Irkutsk Dam on the Angara River raised the level of the lake by 1.4 m (4.6 ft).
As the railway was built, a large hydrogeographical expedition headed by F.K. Drizhenko produced the first detailed contour map of the lake bed.
The omul fish, found only in Baikal,:
There are fewer than 60 native fish species in the lake, but more than half of these are endemic. The families Abyssocottidae (deep-water sculpins), Comephoridae (golomyankas or Baikal oilfish), and Cottocomephoridae (Baikal sculpins) are entirely restricted to the lake basin. All these are part of the Cottoidea. Of particular note are the two species of golomyanka (Comephorus baicalensis and C. dybowskii). These long-finned, translucent fish typically live in open water in depths of 100–500 m (330–1,640 ft), but occur both shallower and much deeper. They are the primary prey of the Baikal seal and represent the largest fish biomass in the lake. Beyond members of Cottoidea, there are few endemic fish species in the lake.
The most important local species for fisheries is the omul (Coregonus migratorius), an endemic whitefish. It is caught, smoked, and then sold widely in markets around the lake. Also, a second endemic whitefish inhabits the lake, C. baicalensis. The Baikal black grayling (Thymallus baicalensis), Baikal white grayling (T. brevipinnis), and Baikal sturgeon (Acipenser baerii baicalensis) are other important species with commercial value. They are also endemic to the Lake Baikal basin.Wikipedia
A look at life in and around Russia's Lake Baikal
In South-Eastern Siberia there is an amazing wonder of nature - Lake Baikal. It is so vast and deep that locals call it the sea. But its water is pure and fresh: a fifth of the Earth's freshwater is contained in this lake.
Baikal is known as the Pearl of Siberia. It is home to thousands of species of plants and animals, two thirds of which can be found nowhere else on the planet. Despite environmental threats, the lake has preserved its purity - due partly to the lack of large-scale tourism.

The Trans-Siberian Railway (in Russian : Транссибирская магистраль, Транссиб) is a railway network connecting Russia with the European provinces of the Russian Far East, Mongolia and China.
The third primary route is the Trans, in its plan coincides with the Trans-Siberian until Ulan Ude on the east shore of Lake Baikal. From Ulan-Ude, the Trans heads towards to Ulan Bator, after which continues southeast to Beijing. The Trans-Siberian remains the most important means of communication in Russia, to the point that about 30% of the country's exports are transported by it. While the attraction leads many visitors traveling in it, it is still widely used by the Russians in their domestic travel.
The project to build the Trans-Siberian Railway was passed through the Finance Minister Witte. The investment was initially to 325 million rubles estimated that given the Russian government debt only through the inclusion of bonds abroad, especially in France and Belgium, was possible. The Trans-Siberian Railway had a direct positive impact on the economy of the area, they opened up: foreign investment in mining, commerce, railways and factories, coupled with the establishment of consulates and foreign trade office in Vladivostok were signs of economic recovery.
The two-lane expansion of the Trans-Siberian Railway was completed after the Second World War. The Trans-Siberian Railway crosses 16 major rivers In addition, it runs 207 km along the Lake Baikal and 39 km along the Amur Bay. From the Trans-Siberian Railway branch routes to Central Asia, the Trans-Mongolian Railway from Ulan Ude to Mongolia and the People's Republic of China from. In its continuation beyond Vladivostok leading railway Khasan Rajin to North Korea.
During the day, connect sporadically express trains with seats along the Trans-Siberian Railway, for example, Omsk-Novosibirsk. The state of the Russian railways is generally good to satisfactory, the Trans-Siberian railway as the main thoroughfare RZD is in very good condition. The average travel speed of passenger trains on the Trans-Siberian Railway is 60 to 70 km / h. Freight trains go slower.
Together with the Deutsche Bahn plans have been developed since 1997, the Trans-Siberian Railway as a transport route for goods from the Far East to take advantage of to Europe. Because of the economic crisis and thus sharp decline in freight by sea, the plans were initially stopped.
The Russian name is Transsibirskaja magistral or Trans-Siberian main route. The most famous train that runs through this route is Rossiya.
