California (Listeni/ˌkælɨˈfɔrnjə/) is a state located on the West Coast of the United States. It is the most populous U.S. state,[4] home to one out of eight people who live in the U.S., with a total of 38 million people, and it is the third largest state by area (after Alaska and Texas). California is bordered by Oregon to the north, Nevada to the east, Arizona to the southeast, and the Mexican state of Baja California to the south. It is home to the nation's second and fifth most populous census statistical areas (Greater Los Angeles Area and San Francisco Bay Area, respectively), and eight of the nation's 50 most populated cities (Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Sacramento, Long Beach, and Oakland).[12] Sacramento is the state capital, and has been since 1854.
What is now California was first settled by various Native American tribes before being explored by a number of European expeditions throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. It was then claimed by the Spanish Empire as part of Alta California in the larger territory of New Spain. Alta California became a part of Mexico in 1821 following its successful war for independence, but would later be ceded to the United States in 1848 after the Mexican-American War. The western portion of Alta California was soon organized as the State of California, which was admitted as the 31st state on September 9, 1850. The California Gold Rush starting in 1848 led to dramatic social and demographic change, with large-scale immigration from the east and abroad with an accompanying economic boom.
California's diverse geography ranges from the Pacific Coast in the west, to the Sierra Nevada in the east – from the Redwood–Douglas fir forests of the northwest, to the Mojave Desert areas in the southeast. The center of the state is dominated by the Central Valley, a major agricultural area. California contains both the highest and lowest points in the contiguous United States (Mount Whitney and Death Valley), and has the 3rd longest coastline of all states (after Alaska and Florida). Earthquakes are a common occurrence because of the state's location along the Pacific Ring of Fire: about 37,000 are recorded annually, but most are too small to feel.

Los Angeles: UCLA
The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), is a public research university in the Westwood district of Los Angeles.
The campus is in the residential area of Westwood and bordered by Bel-Air to the north, Beverly Hills to the east, and Brentwood to the west.
In March 1881 the California State Legislature authorized the creation of a southern branch of the California State Normal School (now San José State University) in downtown Los Angeles to train teachers for the growing population of Southern California.
On May 23, 1919, the school was transformed into the Southern Branch of the University of California, making it the second-oldest undergraduate campus of the ten-campus University of California system.
It offers 337 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a wide range of disciplines. UCLA enrolls about 31,000 undergraduate and 13,000 graduate students, and had 119,000 applicants for Fall 2016, including transfer applicants, the most applicants for any American university.
The university is organized into six undergraduate colleges, seven professional schools, and four professional health science schools. The undergraduate colleges are the College of Letters and Science; Samueli School of Engineering; School of the Arts and Architecture; Herb Alpert School of Music; School of Theater, Film and Television; and School of Nursing.
As of 2017, twenty-four Nobel laureates, three Fields Medalists, and five Turing Award winners, and two Chief Scientists of the U.S. Air Force have been affiliated with UCLA as faculty, researchers, or alumni. Among the current faculty members, 55 have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, 28 to the National Academy of Engineering, 39 to the Institute of Medicine, and 124 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The university was elected to the Association of American Universities in 1974.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2018–2019 ranked UCLA 17th in the world for academics, No.2 US Public University for academics, and 9th in the world for reputation. In 2017, UCLA ranked 12th in the world (10th in North America) by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and 33rd in the 2017–2018 QS World University Rankings. In 2017, the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) ranked the university 15th in the world based on quality of education, alumni employment, quality of faculty, publications, influence, citations, broad impact, and patents. In 2018–2019, US News & World Report ranked UCLA as the #1 public university in the United States.
UCLA student-athletes compete as the Bruins in the Pac-12 Conference. The Bruins have won 126 national championships, including 116 NCAA team championships, more than any other university except Stanford, who has won 117. UCLA student-athletes, coaches and staff won 251 Olympic medals: 126 gold, 65 silver and 60 bronze. UCLA student-athletes competed in every Olympics since 1920 with one exception (1924), and won a gold medal in every Olympics that the United States participated in since 1932.

Owens Valley: Lone Pine
LA taps much of their water from Owens Valley, killing an otherwise thriving agricultural community. Hollywood uses the local hills as a backdrop.
Lone Pine is the gateway to the highest of the High Sierras, with peaks such as Mt. Whitney exceeding the tallest in the contiguous United States.
This video touches on the bittersweet affair (albeit more bitter than sweet) between Los Angeles and Owens Valley, and ends with an unsuccessful, but breathtaking hike up the Mount Whitney Trail.

Tomorrow we have a very important political event (referring to the referendum about the withdrawal of the Gaza strip proposed by Sharon) and it will of course of enormous concern for all of us and we hope that Israel will come out of these events stronger and ready to move ahead towards major developments that will bring both security and hopefully some chances also of peace in this part of the world.

SOUNDBITE (English) Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor of California:
It''s great to be back here, it''s the first time now as governor and it''s great because this is my first foreign visit and I choose the country of Israel, so it''s great because I came here for two reasons and one of them is a groundbreaking ceremony tomorrow for the Museum of Tolerance which is going to be an extraordinary experience to me. I myself have been involved with this for the last 20 years simply because I come from a country (Austria) where we''ve seen a story of prejudice that resulted in terrible atrocities, so I always made the commitment that I wanted to go around the world to promote tolerance, inclusion and to fight prejudice. So, it''s very important to me. But at the same time, since I was already in Israel, I said to myself, since I''m here as governor, I should also drum up some business for California and of course also for your country. This is why we organised here this trade mission. And it''s great to be here today with so many Israeli companies and venture capitalists and also those from the US and California.

It''s great to be here, Schwarzenegger said to a roomful of Israeli businessmen at an evening reception, adding that he will be a salesman for California economic interests.
He announced five agreements with Israeli companies to expand or create business in the state to help California''s struggling economy. One deal with SANRAD, a high-tech firm that will move its world headquarters to Alameda, Calif., bringing a projected 300 jobs.
Schwarzenegger also said that he was in Israel to fulfill his commitment go around the world to promote tolerance, inclusion and to fight prejudice.
On Sunday, Schwarzenegger was to attend groundbreaking for the Simon Wiesenthal Centre museum of tolerance and meet with Israeli government leaders, including Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

The Indus Civilization
Jonathan Mark Kenoyer | The Indus Civilization - Changing Perspectives on Regional Origins, Diverse Character and Complex Legacy: The 4th Mahomedali Habib Distinguished Lecture
Speaker: Jonathan Mark Kenoyer, Professor, Department of Anthropology, University of Wisconsin Madison
Moderator: Munis Faruqui, Associate Professor of South and Southeast Asian Studies; Faculty Lead, Berkeley Pakistan Initiative
Sponsors: Institute for South Asia Studies, The Berkeley Pakistan Initiative, The Mahomedali Habib Distinguished Lecture
ISAS and Pakistan@Berkeley, a campaign to broaden and deepen Pakistan related research, teaching and programming at UC Berkeley, are proud to announce the fourth Mahomedali Habib Distinguished Lecture on Pakistan by Prof. Jonathan Mark Kenoyer, famed archaeologist and one of the world's leading authorities on the ancient Indus civilization.
This lecture will discuss the rapidly changing perspectives on the Indus Civilization that emerged in what is now Pakistan and Western India between around 2600-1900 BC. The origins of this culture can be traced to much earlier periods along the Indus and adjacent regions. Recent discoveries will be presented to emphasize the ways in which different regions of northwestern South Asia contributed to the emergence of early urban society. The regional variations of these cities will be highlighted in order to illustrate how the people who made up this culture adjusted to different local environments and socio-economic and political developments. The character of the Indus cities will be illustrated through remains of their distinctive technology, ornaments, textiles, ceramics, architecture, art and ideology. Between 1900-1000 BC the cities and settlements of this civilization began to change. Major issues that contributed to these changes will be discussed along with the important legacy of the Indus Civilization that has impacted later cultures and continues up to the present.

Dales with whom he co-authored a definitive study of Excavations at Mohenjo-daro, Pakistan: The Pottery.
The Mahomedali Habib Distinguished Lecture on Pakistan is named in honor of one of the leading figures in the history of the Habib family. In addition to successfully guiding the Habib family’s transition from India to Pakistan following independence in 1947, Mahomedali Habib laid the foundations for the House of Habib, a group of powerful business and financial companies. The group has a long-standing history of philanthropy and social service and is currently leading the establishment of Habib University, a liberal arts and sciences university, in Pakistan which aims to bridge the gap between global academia and Pakistan. Toward honoring the legacy of Mahomedali Habib – who was distinguished by his love for Pakistan and his deep commitment to education and philanthropy – the Habib family has decided to endow an annual lecture series in his name. Through this lecture series the Habib family aims to improve and diversify conversations about Pakistan in the United States as well as create opportunities for US and Pakistan-based scholars to dialogue.

LOS ANGELES (source Wikipedia):
Los Angeles, officially the City of Los Angeles and often known by its initials L.A., is the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Southern California. With a U.S. Census-estimated 2016 population of 3,976,322, it is the second most populous city in the United States (after New York City) and the most populous city in the state of California. Located in a large coastal basin surrounded on three sides by mountains reaching up to and over 10,000 feet (3,000 m), Los Angeles covers an area of about 469 square miles (1,210 km2). The city is also the seat of Los Angeles County, the most populated county in the country. Los Angeles is the center of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, with 13,131,431 residents, and is part of the larger designated Los Angeles-Long Beach combined statistical area (CSA), the second most populous in the nation with a 2015 estimated population of 18.7 million.
Historically home to the Chumash and Tongva, Los Angeles was claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542 along with the rest of what would become Alta California. The city was officially founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. The discovery of oil in the 1890s brought rapid growth to the city. The completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913, delivering water from Eastern California, later assured the city's continued rapid growth.
Nicknamed the City of Angels in part because of how its name translates from the Spanish, Los Angeles is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, and sprawling metropolis. The city is also one of the most substantial economic engines within the nation, with a diverse economy in a broad range of professional and cultural fields. Los Angeles is also famous as the home of Hollywood, a major center of the world entertainment industry. A global city, it has been ranked 6th in the Global Cities Index and 9th in the Global Economic Power Index. The Los Angeles combined statistical area (CSA) also has a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of $831 billion (as of 2008), making it the third-largest in the world, after the Greater Tokyo and New York metropolitan areas. Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics and will host the Olympic Games for a third time in 2028.
