A visit St. Gerard Cemetery, Grand Isle, Maine, United States
Joseph Normand Grinnell visits St. Gerard Cemetery, Grand Isle, Maine, United States, on July 16, 2010.
Commemoration of the1814
EASTPORT — In the late afternoon of July 18, 1814, the soldiers manning Fort Sullivan were greeted with an awesome and frightening sight.
The fort, perched on a promontory behind what is now Shead High School, had sweeping views of the passages and islands of Passamaquoddy Bay, which for two years had been the quiet front line between two warring powers: British North America and the young United States. Fifty soldiers had whiled away the days, watching small boats shuffle to and fro across the bay, many of them chock-full of contraband but representing no military threat to American control of Eastport.
Now a 74-gun British ship of the line was barreling through Head Harbor Passage bound straight for town, accompanied by three armed auxiliaries, an assault ship, and troop transports carrying nearly 1,000 soldiers. As the tiny American garrison readied its six cannons, the invasion fleet anchored beneath the fort, guns and mortars trained above.
Resistance was futile. Maj. Perley Putnam surrendered his garrison. British troops swarmed the town, taking the troops into custody, seizing the customs house, and raising the Union Jack over Fort Sullivan. Within a few weeks, all of eastern Maine was under foreign occupation, and communities from Camden to York braced for the expected attack.
The War of 1812, which broke out two centuries ago this month, was a watershed moment in Maine’s history. The British occupation and Boston’s lackluster response to it prompted Mainers to reclaim their independence from Massachusetts, from which it had been ruled as an internal colony since the 1650s.
“Maine’s very negative experience with the War of 1812 accelerated the political process that would lead to Maine becoming a separate state in the Union,” says Pulitzer Prize-winning historian (and Portland native) Alan Taylor of the University of California–Davis, author of “The Civil War of 1812.” “There was a feeling that the Massachusetts government didn’t have the best interests of Maine at heart.”
The war is poorly understood and largely forgotten — a peculiar and humiliating conflict that exposed the weakness of the young United States’ central government and profound differences between its regions. In a war that saw Washington plundered and New Orleans placed under siege, the District of Maine was perhaps the most profoundly affected region of all, with much of its territory under foreign control and many of its PEOPLE deeply disillusioned with their colonial overlords in Boston.
Prior to the invasion, Mainers had been divided on whether to pursue independence from Massachusetts, which had annexed Maine in the mid-17th century in the aftermath of the English Civil War. (Maine’s leaders had backed the king, while Massachusetts backed the victorious forces of Parliament, which gave them free reign to absorb what Bostonians came to refer to as “the Eastern territories.”

Gov Baxter Day - Mayor Baxter Woods
Governor Baxter's Wilderness Legacy's Golden Anniversary Celebration. August 22, 2012. Portland, Maine.
Jeff Tarling, Portland Parks & Forestry Manager, and Baster State Park Director Jensen Bissell Dedicate Mayor Baxter Woods sign, with Walk the woods with Jeff Tarling. Herb Adams and Jeff give a history of the Baxter Woods.
Baxter Family members Scott Baxter, Griffin Baxter and Connie Baxter Marlow unveil the sign.
On August 6, 1962, former Governor Percival P. Baxter acquired the twenty-eighth and final parcel of land that would constitute, at the time of his death in l969, the 201,018-acre Baxter State Park. Up until 1962, his overtures to Great North- ern Paper Company for this 7,764-acre parcel in T2 R9 had been unsuccessful. This acquisition represented the fulfillment of an unstated goal of gifting to the State of Maine a wilderness park in excess of 200,000 acres. It also made possible the construction of three miles of new road linking Abol Campground with the newly constructed southern gatehouse at Upper and Lower Togue Ponds.
Since the Maine Legislature was not in session, Governor John H. Reed and the Executive Council accepted the deeded gift on September 5, 1962. In January 1963, legislative concurrence was se- cured, thereby ratifying and completing the formal record. Consequently, the core documents detailing the particulars of the gifting of this parcel, including the Deed of Trust, appear in the Private and Special Laws of 1963.
On the occasion of this gift, Baxter wrote to Governor John H. Reed: ... in my for- mal letter to Governor Gardiner in 1931, when my first gift was about 6,000 acres, I said, 'I expect some day to see my ambi- tion realized.' (Laws of Maine 1931). This brings to an end an interesting incident in Maine history.
With the donation of a 143-acre parcel at Katahdin Lake by Huber Resources LLC in January 2012, Baxter State Park now con- sists of 209,644 deeded acres. Previous additions at Togue Pond in 1992, along the West Branch Penobscot River in 1997, and at Katahdin Lake in 2006 account for the remaining acreage added since Governor Baxter's death. We celebrate the 50th anniversary of Governor Baxter's final gift of land for his beloved Baxter State Park on August 22, 2012, in Portland.
Friends of Baxter State Park is pleased to partner with Maine Historical Society, as well as Governor Baxter School for the Deaf, Baxter Family Mansion and Museum, Department of Conservation, Friends of Evergreen Cemetery, City of Portland Parks and Forestry Department, Baxter State Park, Portland Museum of Art, and Friends of the Eastern Promenade to cel- ebrate the 50th anniversary of Percival P. Baxter's final gift of land for his beloved Baxter State Park.

The Battle of Machias was the second naval engagement of the American Revolutionary War, the Battle off Fairhaven being the first. It took place on June 11–12, 1775, in and around the port of Machias in what is now eastern Maine, and resulted in the capture by Patriot militia of a British schooner.Following the outbreak of the war and the start of the Siege of Boston, British authorities enlisted the assistance of Loyalist merchant Ichabod Jones to assist in the acquisition of needed supplies. Two of Jones' merchant ships arrived in Machias on June 2, accompanied by the British armed sloop Margaretta, commanded by midshipman James Moore.

HOME: The Story of Maine Land of Liberty
Maine's population exploded after the Revolutionary War. Looking for land to farm, veterans and settlers from southern New England poured into Maine's unsettled forests between the Kennebec and Penobscot Rivers. Feeling they had earned the free lands promised to them by the colonial government in return for supporting the War, these settlers claimed and cleared frontier lands in Maine instead of the remote Ohio land set aside for them. At the same time, speculators like General Henry Knox, America’s first Secretary of War and Knox County’s namesake, used his influence to acquire large tracts of land for low prices with hopes of selling the land to this new wave of settlers to finance the lavish, aristocratic lifestyle to which he had become accustomed. The settlers, however, had other ideas.
This episode of HOME: The Story of Maine explores the conflict over who owned the land which shaped the political and cultural landscape of the Maine we know today.
