SC Brewery Law
A new law in South Carolina will help breweries compete with restaurants.
The Stone Bill as it was nicknamed was aimed at bringing Stone Brewing Company's proposed East Coast distribution center to South Carolina. Stone has since announced SC is out of the running, but the law changes will still help local breweries already here, and those that may start.
Being able to offer food, opens possibilities even more, makes breweries in the state that much of destination, says Will McCameron, president of Brewery 85, a 6-month-old brewery in Greenville.
The law is the second in two years to help breweries. Last year's Pint Law allowed breweries to actually sell beer on premises. Now we're actually allowed to sell beer on site, which as I said helps our overhead, says McCameron.
Brewery 85 plans to open a restaurant on site, but it may be a few years before that's possible due to growth and capital requirements. We're really big supporters of local food truck community, wanna continue to support them, but like I said we'd absolutely love to future construction to have restaurant here, it's nice to have that option, says McCameron.

Michael Kamber in conversation with Steve Hindy - War Correspondents at the Brooklyn Brewery
July 10, 2013. The third installment in the War Correspondents at the Brooklyn Brewery speaker series featured photojournalist Michael Kamber, author of Photojournalists on War: The Untold Stories from Iraq, in conversation with Steve Hindy, former Middle East correspondent and founder of the Brooklyn Brewery.
Video shot and edited by Jackie Snow
War Correspondents at the Brooklyn Brewery is a joint production of RISC (risctraining.org), the Brooklyn Brewery (brooklynbrewery.com), and Togather (togather.com). The series brings war reporters and photographers to the Brooklyn Brewery once a month for an evening discussion about their craft. Tickets include one beer, and all proceeds go to RISC, which trains war reporters in first aid to keep them safe in the field. To find out about upcoming events in the series, visit
A series of changes to state laws has opened up Alabama to the world of high-alcohol specialty beers
A beer revolution is brewing in Alabama.
Drinkers thirsty for something other than Budweiser or Miller didn't have many choices in the state just a few years ago, but a series of laws passed since 2009 has opened up Alabama to the world of high-alcohol specialty beers, neighborhood brew pubs and microbreweries. It's a big change in a Bible Belt state that still has dry counties and legally banned home beer brewing and wine making until this year.
Today, Alabama drinkers can still grab some Buds, and many do. But there's also Truck Stop Honey ale, brewed by the Gadsden-based Back Forty Beer Co.; Monkeynaut IPA by Huntsville's Straight to Ale LLC; Vanillaphant Porter by Avondale Brewing Co. of Birmingham; and Section Street Wheat by Fairhope Brewing Co., located on the scenic eastern shore of Mobile Bay.
And unlike before, hobbyists can now legally make their own beer after purchasing supplies.
Michael Sellers, a founder and co-owner of Good People Brewing Co. in Birmingham, said everything is different because legislators updated some old laws.
There's definitely a vibe of kind of New South resurgence that you haven't felt in years past that you feel now, Sellers said.
Small breweries were common before the United States outlawed alcohol production and sales in 1920 during Prohibition, but large brewers have dominated the industry in the decades since legalized resumed 80 years ago.
Small, craft brewers gained popularity in parts of the nation in the 1980s and '90s, but Alabama was all but left out partly because of strict alcohol laws tied to Prohibition and religious opposition to alcohol use.
Good People Brewing began operations in 2008 under the old laws that limited everything from alcohol content to bottle size. Then, in 2009, a grassroots groups called Free The Hops got legislators to pass a law that allowed higher-alcohol brews, which are typical for craft breweries.
Twenty different brewers now operate in Alabama, including four brew pubs, and total employment is estimated to be at least 250 people. Huntsville has the biggest concentration with seven brewers, and other brewers or pubs are located in Anniston, Birmingham, Dothan, Fairhope, Montgomery, Phenix City, and Tuscaloosa, Wilson said.
The Brewers Guild projects 40,000 barrels of beer will be brewed in Alabama this year compared to just 1,000 barrels in 2009.
The numbers are still tiny in comparison to some states. Atlanta's SweetWater Brewing Co. this year expects to produce 147,000 barrels, or 107,000 more barrels than every Alabama brewer combined.

America’s First Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship
Since its heyday in the late 1800s, bare-knuckle boxing in the US has been relegated to parking lots and grimy basements, an underground sport that couldn’t find a way to bring itself above board. But in June of 2018—after spending years petitioning almost 30 states to sanction the brutal fights—promoter David Feldman finally managed to stage America's first-ever legal bare-knuckle boxing match in Wyoming.
VICE went to the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championships in Cheyenne a few days ahead of the big event to hear how Feldman managed to pull it off, and to meet a handful of fighters for whom boxing—and even MMA fighting—just isn’t hardcore enough.

Fat Tire Amber Ale Can) The Spit or Swallow Beer Review
Shagdog & Jammer are taking a bicycle ride with a Fat Tire!
Fat Tire Amber Ale Can)
Brewed by: New Belgium Brewing Colorado, United States
Named in honor of our founder Jeff's bike trip through Belgium, Fat Tire Amber Ale marks a turning point in the young electrical engineer's home brewing. Belgian beers use a far broader palette of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Jeff found the Belgian approach freeing. Upon his return, Jeff created Fat Tire and Abbey Belgian Ale, (assuming Abbey would be his big gun). He and his wife, Kim traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tire's appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it. Except the name. Fat Tire won fans is in its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness.

New Belgium Brewing Company is a regional brewery located in Fort Collins, Colorado. It opened in 1991 after Jeff Lebesch, the brewery's founder, took his homebrewing passion commercially. In 2011, it produced 712,800 barrels of its various labels. As of 2010, it was the third-largest craft brewery and seventh-largest overall brewery in the United States. Fat Tire, an amber ale, is the company's flagship beer.
The Fat Tire recipe originates from a co-founder's bicycle trip through Belgium from brewery to brewery. The company promotes its Fat Tire ale locally by the public placement of colorful vintage bicycles outside its brewery, which is located adjacent to the public bike path along the Cache La Poudre River.
In 2006 NBB changed its logo. They did so because the company realized that beer drinkers could identify the Fat Tire label, but didn't recognize the brewery label, or make the connection that New Belgium brewed Fat Tire and other best-selling brands, such as Sunshine Wheat. The company's new logo pays homage to the well-known Fat Tire brand bicycle drawn by Anne Fitch. Esquire magazine selected Fat Tire Amber Ale as one of the Best Canned Beers to Drink Now in a February, 2012 article.
Distribution
Before 2006, New Belgium distributed in only 16 states (Washington, Michigan, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, California, Arizona, New Mexico, North Carolina, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Colorado). New Belgium expanded operations in 2002 to be able to distribute to California.
In spring 2006, the brewery began to distribute some of their beers in other markets. Bottles of Fat Tire distributed in Chicago claim Chicago Inaugural: The 1st Fat Tire Ale served (legally) in the second city. In June 2007 Fat Tire, Skinny Dip, 1554 and Mothership Wit became available in Illinois. By the summer of 2007, New Belgium expanded distribution again to include Iowa and select areas of the Minneapolis--Saint Paul metro area in Minnesota. Beginning in July 2008, Fat Tire, 1554, Mothership Wit, and seasonal brews are also served in Tennessee. In March 2009, these beers also became available in North Carolina. In April 2009, in response to huge demand, Fat Tire became available in Indiana. In May 2009 Fat Tire became available in Georgia, South Carolina, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
In 2011, the company added Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. to its territory, bringing the total distribution to 29 states. New Belgium Brewing began distribution in Michigan in August 2012.
Label design
New Belgium beer labels are designed by Anne Fitch, a watercolorist. Kim Jordan, the President of New Belgium Brewery, credits the success of New Belgium Brewery in part on Anne's artwork, Our beers were good, our labels were interesting to people, and we pretty quickly had a fairly robust following. In 2006, her artwork appeared on each of the over 125 million bottles sold by New Belgium; the company's new brewery will allow the company to double production.
Business and energy practices
In 2008, New Belgium Brewing Company was named the best place to work in America by Outside Magazine. This could be attributed to the brewery's efforts to ensure the wellness of their employees. Once a month the brewery's Wellness Committee meets to discuss activities, such as bike tours, for employees to participate in.
New Belgium Brewery has made it a goal to be entirely wind-powered. Rather than directly using wind-generated power, the brewery elects to pay an increased rate for their electrical energy, which is supplied by the City of Fort Collins Utilities to ensure it comes from the cleanest source possible. About 10% of the brewery's power comes from methane gas created as a byproduct of their on-site water treatment plant.

CHINA : FOSTERS OPENS BREWERY IN TIANJIN
TYPE: English/Nat
Beer drinkers in China are set to get a taste of down under with the opening of Foster's joint venture brewery in Tianjin.
The Australian company has spent around 31 million(m) dollars on the first stage of the brewery's development on China's east coast.
The brewery is part of the first batch of Chinese state-run enterprises which was allowed to go bankrupt and then auctioned off to foreign companies.
The opening of Foster's brewery in Tianjin had all the pomp and ceremony of a state occasion.
A brass band even managed a rendition of Australia's unofficial anthem, Waltzing Matilda, to mark the production of the brewery's first beer.
SOUNDBITE:(english)
Members of the media, colleagues and friends, ladies and gentlemen. On behalf of the joint venture partners, welcome to the Tianjin Fosters brewery
SUPER CAPTION: Peter Williamson, Chief Operating Officer, Foster's Asia.
Foster's bought the brewery in January through a joint venture with Wheelock Pacific in Hong Kong and the Chinese government-owned Tianjin Chief Brewery of China.
Beer consumption in China is comparatively low but is increasing steadily.
SOUNDBITE:
When we started recommissioning the brewery we started testing and stylising different beers which were taste tested in the marketplace, and as a result of that taste testing with people in the marketplace we produced a beer that best suits their palate. So it takes time and effort to ensure that the product that you put in the marketplace is what the consumer wants, not what I want to necessarily produce
SUPER CAPTION: Peter Williamson, Chief Operating Officer, Foster's Asia.
The Foster's operation in Tianjin represents the largest single investment by the company in China so far.
Foster's also jointly owns breweries in Shanghai and Guangdong.

FULL CORNWALL ROAD TRIP ITINERARY: Things to do in Cornwall
0:32 - The Eden Project
Famous biodome experience I didn't return to during this trip.
1:21 - Stonehenge
You can see it pretty clearly as you drive down the A303 road. Visiting is quite expensive and you don't get to walk up and touch the stones anymore (apart from during the summer solstice). Contrary to popular belief, you can still see the stones for free quite easily. You can park at the Stonehenge Visitors Centre, then walk down a road for about a mile which brings you passed the main entrance and you can get a very clear view from the side.Stonehenge is one of the wonders of the world and should be on any bucket list.
1:35 - St Austell Brewery
A great brewery serving great beer. You can't go to many pubs which won't serve at least one of their brews. The upstairs Brewery bar is a great place to hide from the rain.
1:48 - Porthpean Beach
A little hidden gem just outside of St Austell. Mainly used by the local sailing club, you can visit this quiet spot without running into anybody else.
1:58 - Kynance Cove
One of the most beautiful viewpoints in Cornwall. The water is a beautiful blue colour even on grey days.
2:11 - Mousehole
The cutest little village in Cornwall. Everything is very small and quiet. There are a bunch of quirky shops and a walk around the harbor is a must. It is also a hot spot for painters and other artists.
2:22 - Penzance
We stayed at an Airbnb in Penzance for the duration of our stay. It's not the prettiest town in the area, but there is an abundance of great places to eat and drink. The locals are very proud of their pirate heritage.
3:03 St Michael's Mount
The reason we took our road trip. The castle in the ocean is a surreal and stunning sight, that can be seen from all around. I highly recommend parking a little way down the beach and taking a walk - which allows you to take in the sight.
3:41 - St Michael's Mount Causeway
Walking the causeway is a surreal and beautiful experience. Try to get there just as it opens (details are all on the website), which changes according to the tides. We got there early and had breakfast at the hotel opposite, where you can watch the sea gradually reveal the walkway. Walking along the stone is even more magical when it's still partially covered with water. You can walk the causeway for free, but you have to pay to gain entrance to the castle and the main gardens. In bad weather, there is a boat service that can take you to the island - but in my opinion it's not as fun.
4:27 - Porthcurno Beach
The most beautiful beach in Cornwall. Bright sand, blue water. Very popular with surfers and can get very busy in high season.
4:44 - Minack Theatre
The coolest theatre I've ever seen. Built in ancient greek style way on the edge of a cliff, you'll never see another place like it. We didn't see a production there (performances run all year round) but you can visit for a small fee - well worth seeing for the views of the sea and Porthcurno Beach below.
5:00 - St Ives
A busy, quirky town with plenty of great cornish food (you must try a pasty!) and trendier bars that serve craft beer. I highly recommend a visit to the Barbara Hepworth Gallery. A beautiful and peaceful walled garden containing some stunning sculptures.
5:16 - Land's End
The most westerly point in the whole of the UK, offering some stunning scenery. There is a small arcade and amusement park area open during the day, as well as a hotel and shop offering food and drink. I recommend that you visit for sunset and see the sun go down over the sea as you walk over to the famous Land's End sign post and see the rock formations glow.
