Along the walk you visit: Easton Gardens and Church Ope Cove; Cheynes Weares and Coombefield Quarries; Cave Hole and Portland Bill; Mutton Cove, Bowers Quarries and Clay Ope. Scenery includes: a lot of rugged coastline with caves, cliffs and coves; old quarries with cliff edge hoists; a number of lighthouses rising from the most southern tip of this sacred Isle of Portland; All Saints' Church, the ruins of St Andrews Church on the coast and St George's Church with graveyard. You also see beach huts huddled in a cove and at the tip of the island; sailing boats and motor boats off shore around the coastline; and maybe horses in fields.

Trip to Portland, Dorset for my 30th Birthday Oct 2015

On Friday 16th October until Friday 23rd October 2015 we headed off to Portland in Dorset to celebrate my 30th birthday.

I had the most wonderful time with wonderful friends. Here are some highlights! :)

Railway Walks Full Episode 5 : Harbouring History - Weymouth - The Rodwell Trail and Portland

The backstreets of Weymouth seem an unlikely spot to explore railway history, but Julia discovers there was once a short railway that ran south from Weymouth and across the unique coastal features of Chesil Beach and Portland. The walk is the ideal platform for learning about the history of Portland Harbour and the tied isle's most famous export, Portland stone.

Portland Bill Walk was about 7.25 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of coastal cliff top paths, woodland path, tracks and some roadside pavements or verges. The walking was generally on level ground or gentle slopes. Route finding was easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. There were no stiles to negotiate.

Nothe Fort - Weymouth Dorset

Built by the Victorians to protect Portland Harbour, Nothe Fort is one of the best preserved Forts of its kind. The advances in technology that affected the Fort are explained through many displays, exhibits and audio visual facilities located on the ramparts, gun decks and underground passageways

Located at the entrance to Weymouth Harbour the Fort is a labyrinth of underground passageways and outdoor areas with stunning views of the Jurassic Coast. Constructed on three levels , which are easily accessed by means of a lift, the Fort is filled with displays, mammoth guns and areas that chart the history of this large and magnificent Victorian structure which took 12 years to build. The Fort is now one of Weymouth’s major attractions and a venue for a wide range of events.
