Half-Day Trip To Colon from Panama City, Panama
When you visit Panama I think most people want to see both oceans. The Pacific is easy because that's Panama City, but the Atlantic can be a challenge.
Colon is Panama's 2nd largest city and it's on the Atlantic side. But it is considered unsafe and tourists are strongly advised against going on their own. However, many guided bus tours are available.
I hate taking guided bus tours because you always end up wasting part of your valuable day going to places you don't care about or being dragged into jewelry stores, tea houses, etc.
Despite all the warnings, I decided to go to Colon on my own and use a local guide to visit the places I really wanted to see. Buses leave all the time to Colon from Panama City and if you time your day (or half day) correctly you can return to Panama City on a near-empty Panama Canal Railway train at about 5:00 PM which affords great views of the canal ($25 one way in 2019).
In summary, I took a bus from Panama City at noon to the Colon Bus Terminal and immediately got into a cab (very important - you must immediately get into a cab - but they are everywhere), went to the Radisson Hotel ($5 fare, 10 blocks) where I hired a guide who took me to the places I wanted to see and dropped me at the train station. The whole 6 hour turnaround cost me $110 and I did only what I wanted while avoiding any danger in Colon. I'm sure this could be done cheaper depending on how much time you want to spend and your negotiating skills, etc. I paid my guide $50 plus a tip for about 2-3 hours but it can probably be done cheaper. But by hiring a guide at the best hotel in town vs. using cab drivers I felt like I got a better experience.
I even had some time to eat a late lunch back at the Radisson Hotel before going to the train station (although snack food is available on the train).
Have fun visiting Colon. There are other attractions I didn't see, like the Colon Free Zone (shopping), and a fort and other historical areas nearby.

Looking back 14 years, what would we have done differently for our first trip to Panama? Well, for one thing, we'd save the $500 - $1,000 on car rentals and spend it on a lot of other fun stuff instead! If you stay in and close to the city, UBER or Cabs are much more cost-effective and not so stressful! Plus, it really helps to know where's best to stay, since that can make sight-seeing so much easier. I'll keep adding to this text and provide more useful links soon, plus we'll be doing many more of this kind of chatty video, with useful tips that will help you plan a super vacation in Panama, so do LIKE this video + SUBSCRIBE to get the new ones ... NOTES:
(a) Retired/Senior Citizen prices are for Panamanian Citizens or Permanent Residents only.
(b) TIP: Catch the train to Colon along the canal, from Panama ($25 one way) then the BUS back to ALLBROOK Mall in Panama city (generally less than $10) and checkout that MALL!
(c) There are 2 ferries to the Las Perlas Islands - one departs from the AMADOR to CONTADORA, the other from in front of what used to be the Iconic Trump towers in Panama city. Their prices are much the same. We used the one on the AMADOR to CONTADORA and really enjoyed the 3 days/2 nights we spent there!
(d) The METRO (Subway) doesn't go to many places you'd like to visit - other than from between downtown (Via Espana) to ALLBROOK MALL and back.
(e) Between the AMADOR and the Old (restored) city, is a pretty tough neighborhood, so DO NOT walk there and back from the AMADOR. Next to the restored city, are still some slums - so stay away from those - do not wander away from the nice, neat, restored areas!
(f) You can buy BEER (50c +) and Wine at supermarkets and Pharmacies etc. and drink them at FOOD COURTS in malls) in Canada that would have got use arrested - the 50c price and/or the public consumption!
(g) PHONE CARDS with DATA and VOICE calls: Look for these at the AP when you arrive and ask them to put it in your phone and get it working for you. But all hotels have free Wifi and you can find free Wifi in many restaurants etc but for any of these - use a VPN to surf securely, as just like anywhere in the world, somebody may be eaves-dropping on you. In the good old USA, a famous team member of ours lost his website because he logged on to do work on it over a FREE Airport Wifi hotspot, and somebody got to see and changed his password to steal that website. He did get it back - but only after major stress and problems. Technically this should not happen when your using a Phone-card and setup a protected Hotspot for your family to share, since then you have essentially a private Internet connection and Wifi hotspot that only you folks can access and use.
(h) What's a really good deal? Dental services: Cleaning is $55 Crown is $500 Eye-glasses: Typically 1/2 the price of the USA and Canada. MRI: $700 and on demand. Movies in top-end cinemas (Wednesday is very cheap) and you can order in food and drink too.
(i) Beer in supermarkets (Restaurants charge $2 to $3.50) local beers are around 70c each but when bought in bulk, as low as 50c each.
(j) Nice malls: Multi-plaza (Downtown, expensive, impressive) ALLBROOK mall (Easily reachable by the Metro, Uber or Cab - it's huge, modern, inexpensive)
(k) Many USA restaurant chains are here too - pretty much similar prices though. Our favorite is a Colombian chain Lenos y Carbon, then also TGIF and others.
(l) Favorite supermarkets: Riba-Smith, El Rey, Pricesmart (same as Costco)
(m) HARD ROCK HOTEL - attached to the Multi-centro mall has wonderful evening Buffets for around $30-$38 Friday - Lobster + seafood, Saturday - Roast Beef + steak etc, Sunday - Brunch. We go there for special occasions, the Buffet has a wide variety of food in addition to the main courses above.
(n) Favorite DESSERT and COFFEE place: Athanasiou - google for locations (in or next to most malls too)

After experiencing the pura vida, the pure life, in Costa Rica, Macca and Brianna headed down to Panama, the final country on their epic Central American adventure.
Panama brought about mixed mentions for Macca and Brianna, because even though it represented a huge milestone, the eighth and final country in Central America, it also meant the end of their travels and the place they had to say goodbye to each other.
However, in Panama they really got to see a Central American country very different to all others they visited as they compared island life to city life.
In this episode Macca and Brianna stop off in beautiful Bocas del Toro, the small cluster of islands just off the Caribbean coast and an easy place to do a whole lot of nothing, before heading down to the capital of Panama City, a city unlike any other in Central America and the perfect place to end their trip.

Panama City, Panama Travel Guide 4K (Visual Vibes)
Beautiful people, rich culture, amazing weather, world-class restaurants. But a few years ago, all I knew about Panama City, Panama was the Panama Canal.
I started coming here in 2010 and I haven't stopped visiting since. There is so much more to Panama than just the canal. Panama City is such an underrated spot in Central America. It rivals Miami in a lot of ways.
In 2014, I saw a beautiful young woman walking her pup down the beach in Playa Venao right outside @el sitio. I had to say hello and introduce myself. Her name was Kary and unfortunately she was leaving, but we exchanged information.
Side note: Playa Venao is worth a weekend! We'll drop a video soon.
A few years later I am back in Panama and Kary graciously offers to show me around the city. Without hesitation, I accept, and I am able to film some amazing locations around this great city.
Every time I come back to this city it's like a family reunion. I've lived in Panama City for up to six months at a time, and I've made some amazing friends there.
This trip was no different. The best part - this time we were able to film. There is so much footage that we will be dropping a second Panama video on May 15. This first video is the visual vibes joint. The next will be a recap of my time in Panama with a VERY special announcement in it.
Every time I come to Panama I have to link up with my boy G who owns Voltage Studios. They shoot some of the biggest commercials in the country. He laced us with some epic aerial footage for this video.
Then, when I'm hungry, I know my boy Mario is always making it happen. Pretty much the godfather of dope restaurants. I'm not just saying this because he's my boy. Check TripAdvisor or the NY Times.
In this video, I visited his Botanica Restaurant and simply - wow. It's in an area of the city that is reminiscent of San Francisco. I could see brunches here being off the hook.
Kary also took me to Taco Le Neta Casco in Casco, and OMG some of the best tacos I've ever had in my life. I was in love with the place and I wanted to film but one of the guys in there said no. I just ate my tacos enjoyed my time and didn't argue.
Then, come to find out, Mario is part owner there. I knew the best (taco emoji) couldn't be far from Mario.
I could go on and on about food. Mario’s has younger proteges in the city as well. Jose at Donde Jose, #1 restaurant in the city on TripAdvisor, Chombolin at Intimo...
I swear you can come track me down if you don't like the food at these places.
A ferry or short 20 minute flight from Panama City is Contondora, with some of the most beautiful waters you will ever see. The island is super chill vibes.
The reason I don't have a six-pack is because I love cookies and ice cream too much. I found a solution here. @keene ice cream. It's all natural ice cream made from the freshest ingredients. I'm a little sad you can only find it in Panama. JP was trying to transport a case back with us.
If there is something I like to do, it's helicopter tours. Panama City is easily one of the top tours in the WORLD. Literally, within two minutes you are going from high rises and ocean views to epic jungles.
It's wild to see the contrast in scenery. Our pilot was straight G. He used to fly around the ex-president of Panama.
There are some things I don't mind paying a little more money for and taking a helicopter is one of those things. It's those once in a lifetime things but a lifetime memory.
So we know I could keep talking about food. Hot sauce at Sista House. Afro-Panamanian food. But you can't eat all day and not workout. One of the coolest things in the city is Cinta Costera. Here you'll find people exercising day and night. They have it all there. Running paths, basketball, soccer, dance classes.
Overall, I can't say enough good things about Panama. I love the city and the people. I created a PassportHeavy guide for Panama City that you can find through the link in my bio.

10 Things You Can’t Miss in Panama

If you’ve never considered a trip to Panama, the bridge to South America, then here are some destinations that just might change your mind.
1. In Panama City, Take the Metro
Even if you have the funds to travel by cab, you’re missing out if you don’t take advantage of the city’s metro. It’s cheap, clean, and it goes to pretty much every tourist attraction in the city.
2. San Jose Church
After the colonization, they built churches to convert the natives to Christianity. To adorn these little cathedrals, the Spanish used the natural resources plucked from their surroundings. Resulting in opulent buildings. It’s home to Panama’s famous golden altar, a centerpiece made from pure gold.
3. Butterfly Haven
It is filled to the brim with several gorgeous varieties of butterfly. Wander on your own or take one of the free guided tours and learn a lot about these beautiful, fluttering creatures.
4. Isla Zapatillas
It's a breath-taking plot of land that’s open to people who want to spend a day or two frolicking in the water. Whether you’re snorkeling, paddle-boating, or just relaxing by the water, you’ll love Isla Zapatillas.
5. The Lost Waterfalls
This hike delivers travelers to three beautiful waterfalls in western Panama. Along the way, you’ll get to see some of the country’s most interesting flora and fauna, including sloths and monkeys. It’s a gorgeous stretch of land, but fair warning: only experienced hikers need apply.
6. Boquete Outdoor Adventures
Customers of all ages have raved about Boquete Outdoor Adventures’ tours. White water rafting, cliff diving, and so much more are on offer when you book a tour.
7. Casco Viejo
This old quarter in Panama City is filled with rich historical sites. Simply walking through the storied Panamanian district is a treat for everyone. The beautiful architecture is a thrill to experience, and the various little boutiques and churches within Casco Viejo are sure to keep you occupied for hours.
8.The Panama Canal
The 48-mile long waterway allows freighters to carry cargo between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in a fraction of the time. Be sure to grab a meal at one of the Canal’s restaurants so you can spend time watching massive ships supply goods to the other side of the world.
9. Mercado de Mariscos
Panama’s famous fish market. If you can stand the smell, the food offerings at the Mercado de Mariscos are amazing. Be sure to pick up a local Panamanian delicacy, ceviche — it might be the best in the world.
10. El Valle de Antón
One of the best parts of a Panamanian getaway is the incredible variety of the geography. Once you’ve basked in the sun-soaked beaches, head to the mountainous region of El Valle de Anton to enjoy Panama’s gorgeous forests, world class hikes, and a plentiful supply of waterfalls.

How far will $50 go in Panama City? | Living in Panama | Episode 4
How far does $50 go in the most expensive city in Central America?
Although we weren't living in Panama, we were unsure of just how expensive a day in Panama City, Panama is so we decided to test it out by trying to spend just $50 per person for the day. This is what happened.
We started the day with breakfast out side our hotel near the Via Argentina subway. Cost $3.50
Next we took a Uber to Casco Viejo. (Cost $2) Casco Viejo is probably one of the most promoted areas of Panama City, Panama and once you start to explore this historic World Heritage site it's easy to see why. Blocks of Spanish, old European architecture, restaurants, bars and museums.
Casco Viejo is definitely more touristy and expensive then other areas of Panama City but it's one of those must visit spots when visiting.
We came pretty close to our budget for the day. Watch the video and find out just how we spent and day and how far $50 goes in Panama City, Panama.

The guys party on a beautiful catamaran with friends, before splitting up for a few days. Alex heads to visit his cousin in the jungle, and Michael visits an old friend.
From there the gang continues onwards to Panama city, before taking a beautiful extended tour of the San Blas Islands.
