Chamonix

Ed Leigh's Money Saving Snow Tips | Ep 6 | Plane Travel
Welcome to #EdLeighsMoneySavingSnowTips | Ep 6 | How to get cheaper plane travel
The first in this 3-parter about getting the best deal when travelling to the mountains for your next holiday. First up...
Flying - this is how most people get to the mountains. If you’re on a tour
operator package - and you can get some cheap deals if you sign up to their newsletters - then flights are included. I’ve detailed tour ops and how to get their newsletters and best deals elsewhere, but here’s a quick rundown of the UK’s top ten tour operators and their newsletter/deals sign up page:
If you’re going DIY, the main airports you’ll look to use are Geneva - number 1, then Chambery (though NB flights often get diverted in bad weather) or Lyon for France. And Zurich, Geneva, Salzburg or Innsbruck for Austria and Switzerland. So how do you get the best flight deal? The trick here is to check where you could fly from. For example, if you lived in say, Slough, you have the option of flying from Heathrow and Gatwick of course, but also Southampton and Bristol might also work, and flights can be cheaper from regional airports, not to mention parking.
To check which airlines fly to Geneva from the airports nearest you, go to the destination airport’s Wikipedia page. Eg for Geneva it’s: then scroll down. I do this quickly by using “command F” or “control F” to bring up the search bar, then I type “Southampton” and on the Geneva airport page I can see that both Easyjet and Flybe fly from Southampton to Geneva.
Once I know all the different flight routes that are available to me I can choose which flight is the cheapest, or the best time of day - or whatever else I need, for me. The huge difference between the prices never ceases to amaze me! For example, Gatwick can often be £100 more expensive than Southampton, and yet it might only be a matter of a few pounds - or say an hour’s difference - to travel to Southampton instead of heading to Gatwick.
Skyscanner is a good site to find out the cheapest time to fly while Kayak is the best flight aggregator and it includes baggage fees which is often a big extra cost. When it comes to paying to choose your seats, remember with Easyjet you don’t need to pay extra to sit your family together as they will do that automatically.
And don’t forget flights are only part of the journey. When booking, think about how you get from your house to the airport, then the cost of getting your equipment on the flight (and if you’re carrying skis or snowboards add around £35-45 for a bag each way to the price of your ticket per person), and then you’ll need a transfer the other side from the airport to your accommodation in the ski resort.
So how do you get the best deals here? Well hiring skis in the resort can be a great option, as you’ll save cash from not checking in a ski or snowboard bag. Check with a ski hire company such as Intersport as that will often be cheaper than taking your own skis (especially as you have to buy your own skis or snowboard in the first place…).
To get to the airport in the UK, if you can’t beg a lift through friends or family, consider a coach company such as Megabus or Uber or get your train tickets in advance at If you must drive to the airport use Holiday Extras to book the best deal in advance or use a service such as Just Park where people living near airports cunningly rent out their driveways
For transfers the other side, the best way to get good deals is to sign up to the transfer company newsletters. My favourite companies are CoolBus who often have great late deals, Bens Bus and Ski-Lifts.com Chamonix also now has the fabulous Easybus connection. AlpyBus does a similar thing.
Tignes has a good shared transfer service here
Transfers are also where social media works really well. There are loads of facebook pages where transfers can be shared. This Tarentaise noticeboard is super useful. Or lots of people post about shared transfers on Morzine Crew.

Chamonix | Viaje de Guiris
[English subtitles available]

Ed Leigh's Money Saving Snow Tips | Ep18 | Mont Blanc Massif
Welcome to #EdLeighsMoneySavingSnowTips | Ep18 | Mont Blanc Massif
Don’t dismiss Chamonix and the Mont Blanc Massif as purely for the rich as there are plenty of bargains if you know where to look.
The Vagabond is actually pretty central and cheap as is Chamonix’s new fancy but actually reasonably-priced Folie Douce hotel but as a rule avoid staying in central Chamonix to keep your costs down. Look at Le Vert towards the climbing wall or HI Hostel up towards the glacier (or what’s left of the glacier anyway!).
Accommodation is even cheaper in Servoz or St.Gervais, which are 30 and 45 minutes away on the train respectively. St Gervais has its own ski area, which is good for beginners and intermediates, and if you get the bigger Mont Blanc pass you can ski all of Chamonix’s resorts too. At the other end of the valley is Vallorcine, which is also on the train line, around 30 mins from Chamonix, through some properly stunning scenery. Accommodation is cheaper here too and it’s linked to the super fun slopes of Le Tour. Trains between St.Gervais and Vallorcine are free with a Carte d’Hote (guest card), which your accommodation provider should be able to give you.
Chamonix does have a tonne of Airbnb options. This list shows off some of the best but there are plenty of options for all budgets from £32 per night on the main site and hosts are usually pretty flexible with dates outside of peak holiday season
Do your drinking at the right place and time. Pirate-themed party bar Barberousse Chamonix-Mont Blanc often does drink promos, which they mention on their Facebook page here: & same goes for the microbrewery Micro Brasserie de Chamonix, MBC
Heaps of bars do cheap drinks at Happy Hour including the bar at the Vagabond Munster Bar Monkey Bar (which also does cheap food on Mondays) & La Folie Douce
It’s worth checking out the tourist office’s events calendar during your stay. They’ll let you know about free apres bands, ice hockey matches (free for kids under 8, otherwise 16 euros for adults and 12 euros for kids), art and photo exhibitions, free ski touring workshops and more
Your nearest airport is Geneva, which has lots of airlines flying in from many different destinations. See the full list here
& visit Skyscanner to get the best deal Your cheapest airport transfer will be with Easybus, which for around 20 euros will get you to Cham from Geneva airport or AlpyBus does a similar thing, and they run discounts for big groups
Chamonix is a great place to try ski touring for the first time. If you’ve hired your skis with Intersport, they’ll even let you swap your regular skis for a touring package during your trip Les Houches, Le Tour and Les Grand Montets have touring specific routes up the mountain, so you can hike up and ski down. They’re shown on … and you can also hike up certain ski pistes once the lifts have closed until 8pm. The pistes are sh…here: And with the top top of Les Grand Montets closed this winter (after the lift was destroyed in a fire), if you hike up to the summit you can have all that amazing terrain pretty much to yourself and a few other hardcore folk for 27 euros. Here is some good advice on ski touring in and around Chamonix:
If you don’t fancy hiking but do want to find the best snow in the valley during your time in Cham, it is worth hiring a guide. It isn’t cheap if there’s one or two of you, but if you can fill the group of say six the price will be come down considerably. Try Ski Bro or Evolution 2 or Chamonix Sport Aventure
Please keep your tips coming in the comments section below, especially if you have any money-saving advice for Chamonix and the Mont Blanc Massif. Cheers Ed!

Ed Leigh's Money Saving Snow Tips | Ep 21 | Portes Du Soleil
Welcome to #EdLeighsMoneySavingSnowTips | Ep 21 | Portes Du Soleil
The Portes du Soleil, which includes 12 resorts across France and Switzerland, is super-close to Geneva and it can be a great value choice for a ski or snowboard holiday. First up, the lift passes are cheaper than in the other big linked ski areas in the Alps. Plus, there are lots of deals to be had, on Tuesdays and Thursdays you get 30 per cent off your pass, families get 10 per cent off, friends in groups of two and three get online discounts and kids can ski free in April when you buy an adult pass. All these deals are listed here: Chatel also does cheap Wednesday deals, spring deals and flash sales through the season Remember beginners and intermediates might not need the whole Portes du Soleil pass, a local pass eg for Les Gets-Morzine might be fine: NB Lift passes are always cheaper online than at the kiosk window, not to mention saving you the queue faff.
In Morzine you can ride the slopes with the pisteurs before anyone else every Wednesday for free (most resorts now charge for this) if you register in advance. Read more here: They also offer free night skiing: The Bec Jaune Brewery in Morzine offers free French lessons every Thursday: The Rock the Pistes music festival is free and takes place every March:
1 or 2 adults and 2 kids can swim for 5 euros at the swimming pool in Morzine:
And also in Morzine the Multipass costs 2 euros a day and gives you access to the swimming pools, ice rink, mini trains, buses and pedestrian use of the ski lifts:
Hideout Hostel is one of the cheapest places to stay in Morzine: Chalet Amo is also good: or Mountain Base Company There are also plenty of decent self-catering apartments in Morzine and Avoriaz on booking.com &.airbnb.co.uk While Chatel does good accommodation and lift pass combos: Mountain Mavericks have some decent chalet & hotel options here: & Crystal usually has good value package deals
You don’t need a car in the Portes du Soleil, as everything is linked by free buses, and transfers from Geneva are quick and cheap. Look at Easybus Alpybus or for bigger groups and families Powder Cab might be the best value and comfortable option:
If you live in the Portes du Soleil or visit there regularly, please do share any money-saving tips you have. I’m really loving all the comments we’ve been getting this season. Thanks Ed
