Ketut from EAT PRAY LOVE in Ubud, Bali
Ketut is the famous medicine man from the movie and book by Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love.
I was curious to have my soul looked into by the famous Ketut Liyer, the medicine man / healer made famous from Elizabeth Gilbert's book, Eat, Pray, Love. The movie version starring Julia Roberts was amazing as well!
Ketut lived in Ubud, Bali. Unfortunately when I arrived, we were informed by his son that Ketut had passed away one year earlier :( Fortunately the place is still open to look around and also, Ketut's son will do a reading for you for about $35 USD (which I thought was a bit high).
Typically community healers in Bali are there to do it for free as a service to their community so I totally understand the need to charge. For others who really want to have an analysis done of their life, in addition to Ketut Liyer's son, there are a number of other options.
If you're in Bali, this website has a list of healers you can go to for some spiritual advice:

FILM DESCRIPTION:
A woman who once made it her goal in life to marry and rear a family finds her priorities suddenly shifting in Ryan Murphy and Jennifer Salt's adaptation of author Elizabeth Gilbert's best-selling memoir. On the heels of a painful divorce, the woman who had previously looked forward to a contented life of domestic bliss sets out to seek her true destiny by traveling first to Italy, where she learns to appreciate nourishment; then to India, where she discovers the power of prayer; and finally to Bali, where she unexpectedly finds the meaning of true love.

Anita's Eat Pray Love Rice Field Joglo Cottage, Ubud Bali, Indonesia
TRIP ADVISOR REVIEW 5/5
Total Relax On Rice Fields
We stayed at this beautiful Anita's cottage for 3 weeks and each day we felt that we are blessed with the magical ambience of this place! Just 4km north of Ubud, the area is as close to nature as it can be! Surrounded by rice fields and palm trees, quiet and pieceful - no wonder they chose this spot for Eat Pray Love movie! The house has spacious room, comfortable bed, large bathroom with bathtub and outdoor kitchen with nice dining area. Kitchen is well equipped and we used it a lot for cooking our favorite meals. Overall, cottage is very comfortable for 2 ppl. Many temples around, some have local performances in the evening. Some good shops, laundry, cafes are around. Cleaning can be arranged with lovely local family: clean, cut grass, bring offerings ;) Whenever we needed help - we got it fast! 3 weeks went very fast. We woul love to stay again! Margarita -Moscow

Bali; Ubud Before Eat Pray Love
From the Global Village Travel Guide
New HD program and Bali stock footage:
Transcript:
A short distance South of GUNUNG KAWI is Ubud, a jewel of a town, and center for the arts.
Located in the middle of the Islands most populous region, Ubud
has long been a cultural center.
The village became known in the 1930's , as an hospitable place for artists,
anthropologists, and the like , and its reputation has grown over the years.
The town is well equipped to meet the needs of the traveler -- there is even a public telephone here .... an item that's still rare on this Island.
At the center of town there are the usual institutions. The palace, temple, meeting hall, banyan tree , market, and bell-tower.
Managed by women from the area, The Ubud market becomes the hub of village activities every third day.
Here among the hustle and bustle one finds everything from live rice paddy eels to exotic fruits and vegetables.
While the market happens every third day, the arts and crafts of Bali are on sale everyday. The work is very creative and the prices exceptionally low.
The Balinese are amazing with their hands. Show them a new craft and they take to it with a natural ease.
Endless discussions and countless theories have been born of this phenomena. Why do artists spring so regularly from the soil of this island?
Some say it is because nothing survives the climate ....including the sandstone carvings that embellish the temples..... As a result, a great many people on Bali must practice the arts and crafts, just to maintain the edifices of the rich spiritual life.
Others say, that , for the Balinese, life itself is art , and beauty is just an essential element of everyday life.
Whatever the reason the talents of the Balinese became world famous long ago, and today contribute to the economic well being of her people.
When, in the thirties, Western artists first took up residense in Ubud, a rich tradition of arts already existed and thrived. Interaction with talented Westerners, however, spurred a renaisance.
Oil and watercolor painting, perhaps, demonstrate this best.
The older forms stressed a highly stylized and formal approach, while the new stressed realism. The traditional style emphasized spiritual subjects while the new forms deal with contempory everyday life. Both are vibrant, and alive, and vividly express the essence of the Balinese experience
In the Hindu/Balinese tradition, a person is expected to develop skills in painting, poetry, carving, Dance, and other refinments
Embracing these values, the Balinese have done just that. .. in fact art is so much a part of life that they have no word for it!....
Here, life and art have merged.
Artist, Nyoman Surardnya , is a man of considerable fame, who puts on no airs as he describes his approach to art.
Translator:
this is all natural color which I've made myself. they all come from natural plants which grow in Bali they come from Betelnut leaves, mangosteen, Betel nut will give a deep red, and also a really dark brown. and hibiscus
: different parts of the plant will give you different colors: for example the flower will give you bright red, while the root will give you the contrasting color of datrf ochre. Heres what I mean by the magic of the natural color: It's very safe, you can use your hands and its also great fun because it creates a vibrant color
A few minutes walk , from central Ubud, - down Monkey Forest Road, - a small but dense grove of trees is home to a large band of monkeys and the setting for the Pura Dalem or temple of the dead.
Hanuman, an important Hindu diety, took the form of a monkey and led an army of monkeys with whom he defended many important causes.
These fellows seem to lead a comfortable life. Perhaps, one day, they'll form an army and defend the Island.
Well, then again, Perhaps Not !!!!!
