Girona to Biarritz Bike Adventure Stage 1
Thanks to our client Tristan Cardew for the video & comment...
Eat Sleep Cycle's inaugural Girona-Biarritz ride rolled out on Thursday with 6 riders and 3 staff. Perfect. Day one featured plenty of flat roads (4% is flat round these parts), an insane 3-course, 11 Euro lunch and a 20 minute berg to warm the legs up for what was to come in the days that followed.

Girona to Biarritz Bike Adventure Stage 6
Thanks to our client Tristan Cardew for the video & comment...
The 6th and final day of Eat Sleep Cycle's Girona to Biarritz tour was our last leg of the journey and would, as the name suggests, land us right in the heart of Biarritz. A gentle start from Arette with relatively flat roads was the perfect warm up before flat-stage breakaway-specialist David O'Brien (6'4 and 180mm cranks..) did what he did every other day when the road wasn't going uphill and charged off the front with Benny Cassidy and David Conroy hanging onto his wheel, taking maximum points in the non-existent race for guy who can reach 60kph the fastest, seated, not on a descent. So with those three up the road and 1200 TSS in my legs from the previous 5 days of climbing cols (that's my excuse anyway..) I decided sitting in and having a chat with Lee and Louise was a much more enjoyable way to end the adventure, and did exactly that. Upon arrival into Biarritz we were greeted with an unfamiliar and all too unwelcome sight of traffic jams and roundabouts, but eventually made it to the beach where a well-timed champagne pop and arrival speech by Brian was waiting, before we all jumped in the Atlantic to cool off. Job done. 6 days, 650k's, 11 categorised cols, 16000 meters of climbing, 18 bottles of wine, zero (ZERO) mechanicals, umpteen coffees and plenty of smiles.
As i've mentioned a bunch of times over the past week, this is the first multi-day tour Eat Sleep Cycle have run and while it could've been a shambles, it went off without a single hitch thanks to the hard work of the three legends running the show. Always professional, always open to suggestions, always willing to accommodate our every need. It's been an absolute blast and i'm so stoked I was able to partake. Hopefully these 6 videos have summed up the vibe of the event, and I look forward to being a part of another adventure soon.

Girona to Biarritz Bike Adventure Stage 3
Thanks to our client Tristan Cardew for the video & comment...
Day 3 of Eat Sleep Cycle's Girona to Biarritz ride seemed to have the same theme as day 2: uphill from the gun (for 50k's..), a couple of monster climbs, some ridiculously quick descents and scenery to rival a National Geographic documentary. We summited the 2072 meter Port de la Bonaigua first, followed by lunch and a beautiful and short (by Pyrenean standards) ascent of the 8km Col de Portillion, then crossed into France to stay in Bagneres de Luchon. On arrival we were given the option to put our feet up, have a glass of wine and watch the finish of the day's Vuelta stage, or alternatively drag ourselves up the hors category Superbagneres (17.5k's at 7%..). Why Benny Cassidy and I decided to do the latter is well beyond me but we did, and can confidently say we earned our rest that night.

Girona to Biarritz Bike Adventure Stage 2
Thanks to our client Tristan Cardew for the video & comment...
After a decent feed, a decent sleep and a decent look at the profile the night before, we rolled out super keen for some uphill cycling action on day 2. We were in the Pyrenees after all. Conditions were perfect; no wind, smooth roads and 40k's of climbing from the front door meant the morale was high and the watts even higher (possibly a little too high..). Once we summited Collada de Toses (1790m) and chased each other down the other side, we realised the temperature was hovering around the mid-30's and even though we'd thoroughly inspected the days agenda no one was really prepared for the climb ahead..an 18 kilometer monster that had plenty of 10+% pinches and was unrelenting in the heat. Luckily our accommodation for the evening lay 20 kilometres downhill from the top and was positioned right next to a river which was promptly sat in by just about everyone. Dinner that night courtesy of Louise Laker, coupled with a visit from the campsite's friendly cats (probably feral but cute enough anyway) meant we went to sleep feeling great.
