Ebony Forest Reserve Chamarel

Ebony Forest Reserve in Chamarel, Mauritius
Ebony Forest is a 50 hectare conservation area for Mauritian endemic species with a rehabilitated indigenous forest, situated in Chamarel, in the south-west of Mauritius.
It was established in June 2017, after 10 years of work in restoring the forests and planting 130,000 endemic species. In addition to the reintroduced species, the reserve is home to some of the few remaining stands of original mature endemic Ebony forest. The reserve has canopy walkways and view points, and also runs guided tours or safaris. There is a museum, restaurant and educational facilities on the reserve. It is located next to the Seven Coloured Earths site, in the Chamarel area in the south west of the island.
Ebony Forest Reserve is a paradise for the island’s remaining threatened endemic flora and fauna. With less than 2% of high-quality forest remaining, the Directors of La Vanille Nature Park, embarked on a long-term commitment to recreate and restore 50 hectare of native forest, where the island’s rare and endangered flora and fauna could find sanctuary. Ten years on, more than 14 hectare of invaded forest have been weeded and more than 140,000 indigenous plants planted. Working in collaboration with the Government of Mauritius and the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, the endangered Pink Pigeon and endangered Echo Parakeet were reintroduced in early 2018. Ebony Forest is now home to five of the nine endemic bird species: Mauritius Bulbul, Mauritius Paradise Flycatcher, Mauritius Kestrel, Grey white-eye, Pink Pigeon and Echo Parakeet.
Keen to share their passion for the Island’s nature and landscapes, Ebony Forest opened to the public in June 2017. The site offers visitors of all ages an opportunity to reinvigorate their senses by visiting the rare ebony forest with a guided tour along a raised walkway, hiking, safari jeep rides. Visitors can meet the endemic birds, enjoy the unbeatable views and journey through the Ebony Experience museum where you will witness 8 million years of natural history.
Ebony Forest is not only committed to restoring the forest, but to inspiring others to participate and get involved. Visitors can go on bird watching and hiking tours, partake in the planting activities and visit the Ecology Centre. Special interactive activities are available for primary and secondary school children. The team welcomes volunteers and works with multiple local and international partners in support of the conservation work. A visit to Ebony Forest helps support the continuous conservation work.

Ebony forest, Mauritius October 2017
Just 2 mins drive from the seven coloured earth or terre des sept couleurs is the unique adventure which is Ebony forest. The guides are great, the place is quiet and well managed. With a museum and a restaurant.
There is also a food joint on the top of the mountain, serving drinks and snacks to refresh you as you enjoy one of the best views of the west coast.
If you like eating well then I found the restaurant's food not so great for the price. This might change if the cook chose better dishes. Until then, the restaurant 'Le chamarel' stays the best place to eat in Chamarel.

Had to keep it relatively close, birds and a bit of magnetic interference meant I couldn't rely on GPS/Compass
