In Ono City, Fukui Prefecture, which is a basin surrounded by mountains on all sides, Echizen Ono Castle, located in the center of it, is famous for its fantastic scenery as a castle in the sky. About such Echizen Ono Castle, we will introduce basic information, access methods, and sightseeing attractions.
This castle is Hirayama-jiro castles (those built on a hill in a plain) built on a mountain called Mount Kameyama at an altitude of about 249 meters in the center of Ono City. The area around Echizen Ono Castle is maintained as a historic park, and there are not only a castle tower but also a promenade where you can enjoy a walk.

The Echizen Ono Castle located on Mt. Kameyama (249 meters high) near the center of Ono City is a low mountain castle that was built by Nagachika Kanamori, who was given the land by Nobunaga Oda for his achievement that suppressed a revolt. The castle looks like emerging from the sea of clouds under certain conditions from autumn to winter, so it has been called “The castle in the sky.” Inside the current main tower reconstructed in 1968 is a museum that articles left by successive lords of the castle and excavated articles are exhibited.

Echizen Japan Tourism. Echizen (越前市 Echizen-shi?) is a city located in Fukui Prefecture, Japan.
As of August 1, 2008, the city has an estimated population of 86,562 and a population density of 375 persons per km². The total area is 230.75 km².
The modern city of Echizen was established on October 1, 2005, from the merger of the city of Takefu, and the town of Imadate (from Imadate District); although the Echizen Basin has been an important regional center for over 1,500 years. It has many former castle sites and prehistoric archeological sites. Echizen is known for its shrines and temples – well over 300. For a year it was the home of Murasaki Shikibu, author of The Tale of Genji. Her father was governor of Echizen Province in the Heian period.

A tour of Ono City, Fukui JAPAN | Experience Fukui 〜Part 1〜
This month, I decided to come to Ono City, a beautiful castle town of Fukui Prefecture that is also known as a little Kyoto. This time, my friend Mathilde, who works at the Ono City Hall, will be showing us around!
In this first part of our trip to Ono City, we start by taking a little walk around the fascinating Teramachi Avenue, lined with modern and traditional temples.
Then, we head over to a manufacturer of Buddhist household, established in the region for more than a century, to experience making 'juzu' beads bracelets used in Buddhist worship.

There really is a castle on a cloud! This is the Japanese castle that looks like it's floating on a CLOUD.
In Ono City, in Fukui, Japan, the Echizen Ono Castle has been the talk of the town as people flock to the city to see the rare the castle in the clouds.
The clouds form around the castle's base from sunrise until around 9am, making the ethereal-looking castle in the traditional Japanese city appear as though it's floating in the sky.
It is a rare event, that only happens around 10 times a year between autumn and spring.
