Paddle Steamers Emmylou & Pevensey on the Murray River Australia Echuca 1
Paddle Steamers Emmylou & Pevensey travelling along the Murray River at Echuca Australia
Echuca, Australia, Travel Video Guide
In the 1860s to the early 1900's, Echuca was a bustling port with paddlesteamers ferrying people and goods all through the the Murray, Darling and Murrumbidgee River systems.
Accommodation :
By the early 1970's, the port was derelict and unused. The council of the day decided that its paddlesteamer heritage was unique and started restoration of the port.
Today the paddlesteamers are making a comeback. Many old sunken boats are being repaired to their former glory.
Kevin Hutchinson is a Shipwright who has played a large role in the paddlesteamer revival.
Echuca is a great example of how rural towns can use their heritage to establish tourism.

Cruise on the paddlesteamer PS Canberra, Echuca, Australia
While staying at Echuca, we went to the historic port area and went on a cruise on the paddlesteamer PS Canberra.
The PS Canberra was built in 1912 at Goolwa, South Australia as a single deck fishing steamer, and then used for a short while as a light cargo boat. In the 1940's the Canberra received an upper promenade deck and was fitted out as an excursion boat, where she was operated by the Collins brothers at Mildura. Since 1967 the Canberra has operated out of Echuca and in 2003 she was fully restored and fitted with a 1923 Wood Fired Marshall Compound Steam Engine.

The Murray River Bird fly's high over the paddle steamer capital of Australia. Echuca Moama is a wonderful and historic region to discover including the Port Of Echuca Discovery Centre! The region is also a haven for thrill seekers that love their water sports. Not far is the spectacular Kingfisher Cruises of the World Heritage Barmah National Park and very narrow Murray River. It's full of bird life and great way to understand the river environment. Enjoy!

Trip on the PS Emmylou Echuca Australia (1996)
In March 1996 (Election Day) we did a short trip on the PS Emmylou with family from the UK. We near on had the boat to ourselves. ( most people at the polls)This is a great way to travel along the Murray.
The sounds of the river with the gentle splashing of her paddels propelled by steam was so relaxing. It's a wonderfull trip.
Our English visitors loved the trip.......And so did we......Australian history at its best..

PS Emmylou and PS Pevensey are restored paddlesteamers operating out of the port of Echuca in northern Victoria. See them here going about their daily trade to the accompaniment of the local birds squawking and chirping at each other along the river banks. The river is the border between the states of Victoria and New South Wales.
