DERMPAV to Echuca via Toolamba: Australian Trains
Over the weekend of 10 and 11 May 2015, the Association of Railway Enthusiasts chartered DERMPAV's 58RM to operate a weekend tour to Deniliquin. The down trip ran via Toolamba to Echuca and this part of the journey along the North East, Goulburn Valley lines and then the cross country line from Toolamba is the focus of this video.
The video commences with the DERM climbing the 1 in 50 grade to Heathcote Junction, followed by a shot near Mangalore, then between Nagambie and Murchison East. The trip along the Toolamba to Echuca line is captured at Tatura, Merrigum, Kyabram, Tongala and Koyuga. The final part of the video sees 58RM crossing the Murray River floodplain at Moama while departing Echuca on the final leg of the journey to Deniliquin.
This historic vehicle was built in 1930 at the VR's Newport Workshops and is based on the St Louis car company design with power equipment from Electro Motive. In the 1950's the Winton petrol engine was replaced with two Detroit Diesel 6-71 engines. 58RM is currently the only one of its type in the world that operates on the main line.

Echuca Overlander - Steam Train to the North: Australian Trains
A first class only steam train journey from Castlemaine to Echuca and return in the north of Victoria, Australia.
Saturday 2 May 2015 saw Steamrail's 111 year old D3 639 departing Castlemaine with three VGR based first class carriages for this unique journey.
Follow the action in this 16 minute video as we relive the sights and sounds of a classic steam train journey through the goldfields to Bendigo and then across the northern plains to Echuca.
At Echuca the loco is turned the old fashioned way on a manual turntable before commencing the journey south.
At Bendigo, 100 years of railway technology can be seen side by side as a modern Vlocity set waits to depart platform 1 while the D3 simmers away in platform 2.
The final leg of the journey sees the locomotive tackling the grade at Porcupine Hill near Harcourt before arriving in Castlemaine as the sun sets.

Australian Steam Trains: D3 639 runs the 'Echuca Overlander' - [ Part 1 ]
On Saturday May 2nd 2015, Steamrail Victoria & the Victorian Goldfields Railway worked together for a tour to run from Castlemaine to Echuca in the Central Goldfields Region of Victoria. This was the FIRST type of it's train to have run in Preservation which included Tambo [Ex VR/SAR joint rolling stock Overland Sleeping Car], Lowanna [Ex- SAR & CR sleeper converted Kitchen & refreshment car] & Pullman Car Macedon [Ex-VR/SAR/CR Overland Sleeping & converted Club Car]. All 3 cars are privately owned and the D3 is apart of the Steamrail Victoria locomotive fleet. The tour ran to an almost sold out train. This was the first time in a very long time Tambo & Lowanna had operated a mainline tour.
[ Please note, I have incorrectly spelt Lowanna on the title screen of the video. Instead of it being 'Lowana' it should read 'Lowanna' ]
The tickets were sold at a Premium due to the Frist Class nature of the Cars.

Australian Steam Trains: R761 departs Echuca for Melbourne.
Echuca is a boarder town of the states of Victoria and New South Wales, It was originally the terminus of the first cross country main line in Victorian Railways History linking the Port of Melbourne to the Warf at Echuca for the transport mainly of wool which had been transported down the Murray River. Over the Easter weekend in 2011 Steamrail Victoria ran a series of shuttles for the locals with steam locomotive R761 and diesel locomotive T356 from Echuca Station to the old station site at Barnes. Here is seen R761 and T356 departing Echuca bound for Melbourne on Easter Monday, Anzac Day. After it leaves the yard and passes a group of photographers who formed a photo line at the level crossing pedestrian gates next to the Midland Highway, the driver opens and the fireman puts on a show as the R class begins climbing!
Escape to Echuca with V/Line
Echuca is an idyllic location along the majestic Murray River perfect for a weekend getaway.
The town was the centre of the river trade in the late 1800s, and the tradition continues, as new generations of skippers take the original paddle-steamers out on the river for pleasure cruises.
