Cairns and surroundings Australia
Cairns is a regional city in Far North Queensland. It was formed to serve miners heading for the Hodgkinson River goldfield, but experienced a decline when an easier route was discovered from Port Douglas. It later developed into a railhead and major port for exporting sugar cane, gold and other metals, minerals and agricultural products from surrounding coastal areas and the Atherton Tableland region. As of 2010, the population is approximately 150,920.
It is a popular travel destination for foreign tourists because of its tropical climate.
The Lagoon is a central meetingplace. You have there en nearby erverything. It serves as a starting point for people wanting to visit the Great Barrier Reef and Far North Queensland.

PORT DOUGLAS QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA. daintree
Port Douglas is town in Far North Queensland, Australia, approximately 80km north of Cairns. Its population was 4000 residents in 2001 (2001 Australian Census). The town's population can often quadruple, however, with the influx of tourists during the peak tourism season May-September. The town is named in honour of former Premier of Queensland, John Douglas. Port Douglas developed quickly based on the mining industry, other parts of the area were established with timber cutting occurring in the area surrounding the Daintree River and with settlement starting to occur on lots around the Mossman River by 1880.
Previous names for the town included Terrigal, Island Point, Port Owen and Salisbury. The town is situated adjacent to two World Heritage areas, the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. On 4 September 2006, entertainer and Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin died at Batt Reef, off Port Douglas, after a stingray barb went through his chest into his heart whilst Irwin and his crew were filming a documentary called The Ocean's Deadliest[1]. Irwin was filmed snorkelling directly above the stingray when it lashed him with its its tail, embedding its poisonous barb. Irwin pulled the barb out himself then died almost immediately.

Solar Eclipse 2012 - Cairns, Australia - November 14th 2012
Eclipse 2012
When dawn breaks across Cairns and Great Barrier Reef on 14 November 2012, the early chatter of birds and animals will be replaced by an eerie silence. The temperature will drop as the moon overtakes
the sun casts a shadow so large the land will be plunged into darkness.
Eclipse 2012 is attracting world-wide attention from visitors planning holidays around the event which is best viewed from the Cairns region. The total solar eclipse will be seen along a strip of land about 200km wide which crosses the top of eastern Australia and the Coral Sea.
For a detailed map, please click here.
It is rare for a total eclipse to be visible from land, so the excitement is building for those who want to share in this extraordinary phenomenon. Three charter flights from Japan are bringing eclipse-watchers, and several cruise ships are scheduled to be in the Cairns & Great Barrier Reef region in time for passengers to see the eclipse. Accommodation inquiries are flooding in and special events have been planned to celebrate Eclipse 2012. Find a viewing spot from a beach anywhere between Bloomfield and Innisfail; a Great Barrier Reef island; or head for a wide open space on the Atherton Tableland or Cape York Peninsula.
