COSTA RICAN RIVER CRUISE, a few miles inland from PUNTARENAS
A rainy day in a rainforest a few miles from Puntarenas, Costa Rica. We hoped to see crocodiles but they didn't come out to play so we had to make do with (much) more gentle wildlife. (11 October 2007)
NORWEGIAN BLISS Docking in PUERTO CALDERA, Costa Rica l Cruise Vlog l Ep. 14
It's a new day which means we are docking in Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica! The sail in is very pretty as you cruise past lush jungle and cargo ships. Lots of people recommend to book an excursion for this port since there is not much to do right at the industrial cruise dock. Some other cruise ships dock at another port in Costa Rica-Puntarenas. The tour we're doing today is through Norwegian Cruise Line though most other cruise lines offer this tour as well. It is called: A REAL COFFEE EXPERIENCE. Here is the tour description from NCL's website:
This experience allows for an intimate glimpse inside one of the most important aspects that defines Costa Rica as the strongest nation in all of Central America. Coffee cultivation has been the primary source of income for many Costa Rican families since the turn of the 19th century. You’ll visit a 670-acre cooperative farm owned by more than 2,300 farmers of who 60% are women. Each member contributes almost 10 acres of land to the coop. The coffee that they cultivate and produce is sold directly to one of the largest coffee companies in the world, Starbucks. This coffee is also purchased by Rainforest Alliance, an organization that focuses on the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable development.
You’ll experience first hand the coffee roasting process and have the chance to sample the flavorful brewing. Also see how the coffee beans, also known as cherries, are picked, sorted, peeled, fermented and sun-dried. Learn many interesting facts that may change your appreciation of this highly consumed beverage. Feel free to browse the selection of hand-made souvenirs before heading to the town of Sarchi. A photo-stop will be made at the largest oxcart monument ever built and a stop at the factory that made it; see the ancient water wheel that propels most of the machinery they use to cut and saw the wood.
As always, make sure to watch in HD for the best video quality! Hope you enjoy! :)

COSTA RICA: AERIAL TRAMWAY HAS HUGE TOURISM POTENTIAL
English/Nat
Latin American nations are starting to wake up to the huge tourism potential of their untamed wildernesses.
The new buzz word is eco-tourism - and Costa Rica is leading the way with an aerial tramway through the jungle.
It's an excursion that allows tourists to enjoy the splendours of one of the world's most diverse ecosystems.
Pointing the way to the future.
This aerial tramway is in the heart of Costa Rica's Braulio Carrillo National Park.
It is viewed by many as the sort of low impact scheme Latin Americans governments should be encouraging.
The unique facility was completed in 1994 by Dr Donald Perry, one of the foremost experts on the world's rainforest canopies.
The tramway offers an excursion which allows visitors an extraordinary glimpse of one of the densest ecosystems on the planet.
The outbound leg of the journey introduces the subcanopy - a dark world of overburdened limbs dripping with exotic mosses.
On the way back, visitors take a breathtaking journey through the airy canopy, with its treetop gardens a home to two-thirds of all rainforest species.
SOUNDBITE:
The hanging gardens of the new tropics is what we are trying to point out for everybody to enjoy. If you look out of a gondola, every side that you look you will see a lot of plants, a lot of beautiful insects moving around and beautiful plants all over the place. You have to consider that in this place we have an average of 450 different species of trees.
SUPER CAPTION: Alex Vargas, park guide
The challenge for Latin American countries is to develop their tourism potential without damaging the natural beauty - their biggest asset.
In the Braulio Carrillo National Park, Costa Rica appears to be on target.

Puntarenas / Nick in Costa Rica

HISTORY:Puntarenas (Pointsands, from punta arenas, or sand point in Spanish) is the capital and largest city in the Province of Puntarenas, on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The eponymous and oddly shaped province has its largest section in the South, far from the capital.First known as Villa Bruselas in colonial times, Puntarenas was discovered by Hernán Ponce de León in 1519. Despite the use of the Gulf of Nicoya as an entryway to Costa Rica's inland territory, the port of Puntarenas was not developed until 1840 when coffee production in the highlands reached exportable volumes. In 1845 the Congress of the Republic declared Puntarenas a duty-free port (with the exception of Cognac and hard liquor).
