Mini cascades of water flows through the Eco Park at Sohra, Meghalaya
Eco park is one of the beautiful site to visit in cherrapunjee. A large Eco Park established by the Meghalaya government in the plateau, which hosts several hybrid and indigenous orchids in the Green House donated by Shillong Agri-Horticultural Society. Also the Eco Park offers breathtaking view of distant Sylhet Plains of neighbouring Bangladesh. There is a stream inside the park and one has to cross a bridge to get near the edge of the canyon. The scenic beauty from the edge is awe inspiring. The Nohsngithiang Falls originate from the southern egde of the park.
Cheerapunji also called Sohra, Cherrapunjee and Charrapunji, is a town in East Khasi Hills district in the Indian state of Meghalaya. It is credited as being the wettest place on Earth. However, nearby Mawsynram has more rainfall nowadays, and both are surpassed by Lloró, Colombia. Today, climatic changes have edged Cherrapunji out of the topmost 'wet' slot, but it still retains its pristine beauty, its unusual facets, the perpetual clouds, and the perpetual mists. Appropriately, Cherrapunji lies in the heart of the State of Meghalaya-the abode of clouds. It is the traditional capital of a hima which is a Khasi tribal chieftainship constituting a petty state known as Sohra or Churra. High above misty valleys and foaming rivers, ensconced in swirling clouds and perched on an escarpment, lies Cherrapunji (4,500 feet).
Cherrapunji receives rains from the Bay of Bengal arm of the Indian summer monsoon. The monsoon clouds fly unhindered over the plains of Bangladesh for about 400 km. Thereafter, they hit the Khasi Hills which rise abruptly from the plains to a height of about 1370 m above mean sea level within 2 to 5 km. The winds push the rain clouds through these gorges and up the steep slopes. The rapid ascent of the clouds into the upper atmosphere hastens the cooling and helps vapours to condense. Most of Cherrapunji's rain is the result of air being lifted as a large body of water vapour. The extreme amount of rainfall at Cherrapunji is perhaps the best-known feature of orographic rain in northeast India.
The home of enterprising Khasi clans, Cherrapunji's place in the Guinness Book of Records is not its only claim to fame. Along with falls lesser in height but no less alluring, the spectacular, cascading 1,035-ft-high Mawsmai Falls-the fourth highest in India-lie just a few kilometers beyond Cherrapunji. Close by is situated a fascinating labyrinth of underground passages beneath age-old caves-a veritable dream for amateur explorers. Elsewhere around Cherrapunji, Khasi monoliths (stones in memory of their ancestors) lie dotted around-a vague reminder of the forests of Bastar. Cherrapunji has several comfortable private hotels. Staying at the Circuit House and the Dak Bungalow require prior permission from the administration. Cherrapunji is 58 km from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. A steep motorable road, almost perpetually bathed in mist as it climbs upwards on the last lap, leads up to Cherrapunji. Buses and taxis ply to Cherrapunji from Shillong.

Cherrapunji Rain | Eco Park | Mawsmai Caves |
*** Mesmerizing Meghalaya Episode # 3 - Cherrapunji Rain| Eco Park | Mawsmai Caves | ***
Continuing from the previous episode in Cherrapunji, I was awestruck when I saw the vast green mountains and a cliff waterfall. It reminds us the scenes from Bahubali movie where Prabhas (Bahubali) climbs the cliff waterfalls.
Khublei Eco Park - It is designed by Government of Meghalaya, providing opportunity to the tourists to view spectacular green canyons and cliff waterfall. The scenic beauty from the edge of the waterfall in Eco park reminds us how beautiful and peaceful is nature earth. There are numerous other attractions in Eco park, one such is Missing falls. You will not be able to see it till you go near to it, however the sound of the waterfall can be heard from distance. Eco park also offers a view-point of Bangladesh plains (only if the weather is clear) as Meghalaya shares the border with Bangladesh.
Mawsmai Caves - It is one of the most famous limestone cave in Meghalaya near Cherrapunji. A major tourist spot that leaves all spellbound. It is 150 metre long cave with various formations of stalagmites and natural underground water streams.
Cherrapunji Rain - Though Cherrapunji is no more the wettest place on the earth, however it still holds title of most rain in a month. Mawsynram - a calm silent village in Meghalaya is the current wettest place on earth. As I was planning to travel to Cherrapunji from Shillong, my cab driver wished me luck to have a good time. The reason being it is usually very cloudy in September and that reduces chance of checking out major tourist attractions of Cherrapunji. To my surprise, it was shiny bright sunny through out the day. I always wanted to experience Cherrapunji rain. At last while I was leaving from Cherrapunji to Shillong, there was loud rolling thunder sound and within moments it started raining fiercely. It was an amazing experience altogether in Cherrapunji.
How to reach Cherrapunji (now called as Sohra)-
1] Cabs - Hire cabs from Shillong for a day tour to Cherrapunji for about Rs 2000. You can stop anywhere and enjoy the views
2] Bus - Meghalaya tourism department and other private travel operators have buses which take you to all the major tourist places in Cherrapunji
3] Bike - Hire a rental bike if you’re going with friends. Depending on which CC bike you prefer ranging from 125 CC to 350 CC (Rs 500 to Rs 1200 per day)

Video description:
In this video we show you the spectacular waterfalls & living root bridges that Cherrapunji is so famous for. Cherrapunji, located in Meghalaya state, North-East India, is easily a contender for the most inspiring and incredible places we've visited in Asia so far.
Cherrapunji is the second wettest place on Earth. All this rain does have its perks though because without it, you wouldn't see the incredible waterfalls that Cherrapunji is famous for. In this video we show you the waterfalls cascading down from the Eco Tourism Park, the Nohsngithiang Falls (Seven Sisters Falls), Nohkhalikai Falls (340m, tallest plunge waterfall in India) and Rainbow Falls (incredibly beautiful remote jungle waterfall). Many of these waterfalls (except for Rainbow falls) are view-able from viewpoints near the town of Sohra (Cherrapunji town).
Cherrapunji is also known for the unique and fascinating living root bridges. These all natural bridges are hand-made by the tribal Khasi & Jaintia people, from the aerial roots of the rubber fig tree (ficus elastica). The aerial roots are interwoven across rivers to form incredibly strong and durable bridges, allowing the people to traverse the river even during heavy floods.
To see the living root bridges, we trek from the small village of Tyrna to the remote tribal village of Nongriat. In Nongriat you can find a homestay and stay there a few nights to experience the famous double decker living root bridge, which is found in the village itself.
You can also make daily treks into the surrounding wilderness, using Nongriat as a base, to see more amazing living root bridges and the incredibly beautiful rainbow waterfall.
