Although the Peruvian government has guidelines for visitation it is important that when Machu Picchu open in April that travelers to Peru are careful not to harm or endanger the well being of the tourism locations of South America travel. Videos of Cusco tours have shown some destroyed areas along the Inca Trail, but cultural tours are resuming well now.
Cusco is often times spelled as Cuzco from a mistranslation of Qusqu by Spanish invaders of Castilian Spanish to Quechua Inca language.
Cusco is located about 2 hours via plane from Lima at an altitude of 3,400 m / 11,000 feet in the Andes Mountains of Peru. The ancient Inca capital is a major tourist destination with over 1 million visitors a year. Cusco was declared a World Heritage Site in 1983 by UNESCO.
Cusco tours are available by SolsticeTours through the ancient Inca capital strategically located in the Sacred Valley, known in Spanish as Valle Sagrado. Cusco and Machu Picchu Hotels are available.
Advanced culture, art and sciences thrived in Cusco before the arrival of the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizzaro. The famous Inca Trail connected to many Cusco Tours and many locations within the Inca Empire which runners known as a Chasqui would deliver messages. Today the Inca Trail is a popular Peru hiking location that can be enjoyed on 2 or 4 day hiking trips.
Train rides from Cusco arrive to Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Inca. Cusco Tours generally are 2 full days in length consisting of a Cusco City Tour and the local ruins, and a second day in traveling the Sacred Valley by bus of the local native market of Pisac and other ancient cultural sites.
Cusco tours are the most popular tourism attractions in Peru due to extreme advertising of Machu Picchu vacations, although there are many other locations in the Amazon, Kuelap, Nazca Lines, and many others.

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu (also known as Camino Inca or Camino Inka) is a hiking trail in Peru that terminates at Machu Picchu. It consists of three overlapping trails: Mollepata, Classic, and One Day. Mollepata is the longest of the three routes with the highest mountain pass and intersects with the Classic route before crossing Warmiwañusqa (dead woman). Located in the Andes mountain range, the trail passes through several types of Andean environments including cloud forest and alpine tundra. Settlements, tunnels, and many Incan ruins are located along the trail before ending the terminus at the Sun Gate on Machu Picchu mountain. The two longer routes require an ascent to beyond 4,200 metres (13,800 ft) above sea level, which can result in altitude sickness.
Concern about overuse leading to erosion has led the Peruvian government to place a limit on the number of people who may hike this trail per season, and to sharply limit the companies that can provide guides. As a result, advance booking is mandatory. A maximum of 500 people are allowed on the trail each day, of which only 200 are trekkers, the rest being guides and porters.[citation needed] As a result, the high season books out very quickly.
The trail is closed every February for cleaning. This was originally done informally by organizations such as South American Explorers but is now managed officially.
Machu Picchu (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈmatʃu ˈpitʃu]) (Quechua: Machu Picchu; [ˈmɑtʃu ˈpixtʃu]) is a 15th-century Inca citadel situated on a mountain ridge 2,430 metres (7,970 ft) above sea level. It is located in the Cusco Region, Urubamba Province, Machupicchu District in Peru, above the Sacred Valley, which is 80 kilometres (50 mi) northwest of Cuzco and through which the Urubamba River flows.
Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was constructed as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472). Often mistakenly referred to as the Lost City of the Incas (a title more accurately applied to Vilcabamba), it is the most familiar icon of Inca civilization. The Incas built the estate around 1450 but abandoned it a century later at the time of the Spanish Conquest. Although known locally, it was not known to the Spanish during the colonial period and remained unknown to the outside world until American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention in 1911.
Machu Picchu was built in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stone walls. Its three primary structures are the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. Most of the outlying buildings have been reconstructed in order to give tourists a better idea of how they originally appeared. By 1976, thirty percent of Machu Picchu had been restored and restoration continues.
Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historic Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide Internet poll.

Amazing Trekking Adventure to Machu Picchu in Peru
Trekking to Machu Picchu in Peru should be one of the to-do list priorities. The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu has become the perfect way to arrive at the ancient Inca monument. Unfortunately the access has been restricted and only 500 hundred people are allowed to start the hike per day. This number includes porters, guides and cooks. Only around 200 permits are allocated for tour hikers. Check for inca trail permits and make a reservation as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Alternative treks like the one in the video are available, but nothing compares to the original Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
Alternative Trekking route to Machu Picchu (Jungle Trek) in Peru. Mountain Biking to Santa Maria, trekking to Santa Teresa Hot Springs and Aguas Calientes. Overnight at the Inkaterra or Sumaq HIGHLY recommended after the arduous Trek.

Machu Picchu, Peru - Part 1
Ancient Peru & Machu Picchu
May 6-15, 2007
Day 1 - Lima
Fly overnight to Peru.
Day 2 - Lima
Arrive this morning in Lima. A Go Ahead representative greets you and escorts you to your hotel. Once youve checked in to your hotel, an expert local guide leads you on an extensive tour through the two facets of Lima, ancient and new. With over 9 million inhabitants, Lima is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Center but also a bustling modern metropolis. Youll see the citys Cathedral, the Plaza de Armas and the Church of San Francisco, which houses catacombs dating back to the 16th century. Tonight, enjoy our included Welcome Dinner in Lima.
Day 3 - Lima
Today is free to explore Lima at your leisure. You may want to visit one of Limas several museums, such as the Museo de Arte, with its ample collection of pre-Columbian artifacts discovered in nearby Incan ruins. Or you might shop for unique souvenirs at the Polvos Azules city market.
Day 4 - Cuzco
Enjoy a quick flight to Cuzco, center of the ancient Inca culture and South Americas oldest continuously inhabited city. Take the rest of the afternoon and evening to enjoy Cuzcos excellent shopping and night life. Dinner is included this evening.
Day 5 - Cuzco
Cuzco is a brilliant example of a living museum. This magnificent capital of ancient Peru was—and still is—the base for accessing the surrounding religious sites. The city still contains walls and roads originally built by the Incas. As you walk the streets on this mornings fully guided sightseeing tour, notice how old Inca markings and ruins blend in with trendy new cafés and restaurants. Youll see the magnificent 16th-century cathedral and, just east of the city center, the breathtaking Korikancha Temple, a testament to the wealth and power of the Incas that was once fully covered in gold. After lunch, venture off to four separate Inca archaeological sites, including Sacsayhuaman, where an old fortress holds clues to the Spanish victory over the Incas in 1536. Some of the interlocking stones preserved in these ruins weigh as much as 360 tons.
Day 6 - Machu Picchu
Approaching Machu Picchu is a journey youll never forget. Today, youll take a train up Picchu mountain and through the lush valleys that lead to the evocative Lost City of the Incas. Surrounded by emerald green mountains and bathed in an almost constant stream of sunlight, there is nothing in South America—and perhaps in the world—quite like the sight of Machu Picchu. This famed Lost City of the Incas is said to have been excavated by Hiram Bingham in the early 20th century, but whose origins remain one of the worlds greatest mysteries. On a full-day excursion to the massive ruins, walk the same steps up the Temples of the Moon and the Sun as the Incas once did.
Day 7 - Cuzco
Spend a free morning in Machu Picchu valley and enjoy an included lunch. Then return to Cuzco via train.
Day 8 - Cuzco
A local guide leads a full-day sightseeing tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, nestled below and between Cuzco, Machu Picchu and the surrounding Andes Mountains. In some ways even more historically important than Machu Picchu, the valley illustrates the Incas technological expertise. Youll see the famous ruins of Pisac and Ollantaytambo and visit several local market towns. Also featured is the longest man-made pre-Columbian canal ever built.
Day 9 - Cuzco
With a free day in Cuzco, you might choose to head to the Archaeological Museum with thousands of artifacts from nearby ruins.
Day 10 - Lima
Fly to Lima this morning. After an included lunch, view worldwide icons of pre-Colombian art at the Larco Herrera Museum, where you will see the finest gold and silver collection from Ancient Peru as well as the famous erotic archaeological collection. Also, Larco is one of the few museums in the world where visitors can enter the storage area and view the museum's 45,000 classified archaeological objects. Then join your fellow travelers for a Farewell Dinner in Peru.
Day 11 - Lima
Board your flight home.

Inca Jungle Trek & Mountain Bike to Machupicchu. Through impressive scenery. The Tropical Inca Trail is a new route offered by Eco Quechua Lodge, which involves birding and hiking through the heart of Vilcabamba mountain forest, we cross one of the highest road passes in the Andes. This challenging, four-day circuit traverses widely diverse landscapes and climate zones, and ends with a dawn view of the valleys below from Machu Picchu.
Departure by Train is also available. Do you know the way to Machupicchu? That's all right, we'll assume you're already there After your Machupicchu visit want to get out of (formerly Aguas Calientes village) as fast as possible (believe us, you really do!) and we're sure you'll want to visit the famous Cloud Forests of Santa Teresa Perú. So how do you get to Santa Teresa from Machupicchu? See below!
Machupicchu is 4 hours and a half away by train from Cusco; recommended route is to travel by car to Ollantaytambo and continue by train for one and a half hours to Machu Picchu Pueblo (formerly Aguas Calientes village) at 2,450 meters (8,038 ft.) above sea level. After your visit to the mysterious and enigmatic Sanctuary of Machupicchu, we pick you up from Aguas Calientes by train. Or you can choose the two hours and half nature walk along the Urubamba river through the tropical forest by the western face of Machupicchu. Mix and match to suit your preferences!
How do I get back to Cusco? Access via land Of course, one of the most talked about subjects in Santa Teresa is the road conditions, We are happy to report that every year they improve more and more! The road is now completely paved from Santa Maria Highway all the way to Cusco is about a four and half hours drive and from Santa Teresa to Santa Maria 40 minutes drive this is still a dirt road. In January 2012 there are plans to pave the rest of the road from Santa Maria to Santa Teresa this is a new cheaper access to Machupicchu. Cheaper in price but is not cheaper in terms of activities! The tour includes all the best activities in the area of Santa Teresa and by the surrounding areas of Machupicchu.
