Kayaking the Econfina Creek near Youngstown Florida and visiting the springs with my family
Kayaking the Econfina Creek near Youngstown Florida and visiting the springs with my family. This is the perfect little creek to paddle on the way to Panama City or Mexico beach where we stayed. We tried to use Livery outfitters but they refused use to put in our own personal kayaks on their property. We was told by them to put in at Hwy 20 and we did. We took out at CR 388 for a 6.34 mile trip. The Livery people are not outfitters and only steal money from tourist. You should plan on taking two vehicles.
Old Homestead Site at Econfina Creek Wildlife Management Area
Exploring at Econfina Wildlife Management Area I saw remains from this old homestead area that may date back to the early 1900's. It also could've been used as a school at one but not exactly sure. I could see evidence from the past as I roamed around like fencing, some ruins and remains of a structure. Besides the scenic wilderness the area has a rich history as well. I left everything undisturbed as always I looked around, please be respectful of what remains if you come across this site or others like it in this preserve.
Econfina Creek Trip
My family for years has loved canoeing and is avid kayakers of Florida endless streams, rivers, creeks, bays and the much of the gulf coast. That is why we couldn't pass up visiting the Econfina Creek Canoe Livery for an easy day on the creek. They had a huge selection of canoes and kayaks and were excellent hosts making the whole experience a memorable enjoyment for my wife, youngest son and me.
Several of the springs were absolutely breathtaking, with the whole creek an experience winding through seemingly untouched nature. With all the people on the creek it was amazing the solitude we still had as we paddles effortlessly with the creek as we lazily took in the sights. Along the way we had several spotting of wildlife that left me regretting I wasn't constantly manning the camera for there were several amazing highlights captured only in our memories.

Kayaking in Econfina Creek
Here it is! This was filmed in Econfina Creek with my GoPro Hero 3+ My family and I went two years ago but this time it was just my father and I! The total trip took around five to five and a half hours. The scenery there was extremely beautiful and breathtaking, literally! When I jumped in the springs, the cold went straight to my chest and couldn't breathe for a second. The experience was amazing and I hope to go back again soon

Econfina Creek Spring and Fishes, 2011
Kayaking down Econfina Creek in NW Florida for my third time, I focus on a spring and fishes. It is September 16, 2011. The day is perfectly warm and clear as is the water, which is low with a steady brisk current. The water flows south toward the Gulf of Mexico, but is intercepted by a reservoir serving Panama City.
Here are several springs bubbling up from the Florida aquifer. I haven't seen one like this before. It shoots out of the bank beside the creek. The video starts with Renee kayaking upstream. Beyond her is the cove containing the spring where a young woman borrows a swim mask, pushing forward to get a look into the spring outflow. When she lets go of the rocks, the water tosses her into my kayak and we laugh.
From the NWFWMD Spring Map, I guess this might be Gainer Springs #2. Here is a description:
Although much of the land bordering the creek is privately owned or inaccessible, we find a shallow beach to stop for lunch. Looking closer into the water I see fish swimming upstream. Progress is slow and suddenly they let go and swim or drift downstream until just past the shadow of our tree when they turn around and space themselves like a fleet ready to repeat the upstream advance. I had never seen so many fish all flocking together and behaving like this. Later someone told us that similar groups of fish are frequent all along the creek. They swim upstream to catch food flowing downstream, right into their mouths. Looking closely at this video frame by frame I found one fish I think might have caught something. His mouth looks like a bubble of air and the top fin is raised up like a fan.

Pitt and Sylvan Springs Park
Pitt and Sylvan Sprins is a wayside park in Walton County, Florida, in the Econfina Wildlife Management Area off Highway 20.
It is a beautiful set of springs, there are some nice interpretive signs, a nice picnic area, and native plants used for landscaping. This is a nicely maintained park.
There is an interpretive sign about Mr. Gainer, who was a soldier under Andrew Jackson who came through here in the First Seminole War. He liked the area so much that he moved here. The sandy soil is not good for growing anything, but he loved it so much that he thought that he had what he needed. His son was killed nearby during the Second Seminole War, but that is life on the Frontier. I don't have the Seminole War / history part in the video because I didn't like my narration, so didn't include that.

Kayaking at Shell Island Panama City Florida Oct 2016
Me, my wife and youngest son kayaking around Shell Island, Panama City Beach FL this October. It was a beautiful, warm, cloudless day. Our kayaking was uneventful, which is ok! But we learned that we definitely want to kayak more, especially around the coast. Next trip will need to involve some kayak fishing.
