Birding in Ecuador 2015
I spent two months volunteering as a guide at Bellavista Lodge in northwestern Ecuador January and February 2015. During my time I managed to capture some video footage of the forest wildlife and birdlife, which I have finally got around to editing into this video.
Ecuador - Birds in Mindo
Mindo, at an altitude of 1300 m is the home of an estimated 550 bird species, including a variety of humming birds.
We visited Ecuador on our overland trip from the Netherlands to South Africa and South America; see our playlist
Cloud Forest Birds in Mashpi Lodge’s gardens in Ecuador
Clips of bright colorful birds of the Choco cloud forest taken in two different areas where Mashpi puts on plantains for birds to eat. Sometimes mammals also show up to these gardens, as seen near the end of the video with the Tayra. Gardens like this are attractions people can set up almost anywhere there is forest, offering interesting opportunities for wildlife photography. Not all birds come to gardens though, and the way they are designed and the exact location in proximity to native vegetation can greatly influence what species may visit!
So many birds at Mashpi Lodge, Ecuador! 4K

Cuyabeno Amazon Jungle Tour - Ecuador in 4K
The Cuyabeno Reserve is a protected area since 26 July 1979 with an area of 603.380 square kilometers. One of the main objectives of the Cuyabeno Reserve is the continuous conservation of the Amazonian ecosystem- the most complex ecosystem in the world. This reserve is a complex of rivers, lagoons, and flooded forest. This protected area is characterized by its high biodiversity and interactions between the species inhabiting the area. The Reserve’s geomorphology is a consequence of the rivers carrying sediments and materials from the Andes, mainly by the Aguarico River.
The immense volume of water flowing down from the mountains maintains the naturally high water levels ensuring that the river is navigable all year round. In the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve there are 10 monkey species, 4 caiman species, 590 bird species, 167 mammals, 90 amphibians, 90 reptiles and hundreds of insect and spider species, along with an incredible record of 307 tree species per hectare. There are two seasons, dry and rainy. Access to the lodges are by fluvial (river) transport offered by the local indigenous communities coordinated by the lodge and a highly trained, accredited naturalist guide.
Day 1: We met in Lago Agrio at 9:00 am, where we we took a bus to the entrance of the Cuyabeno Reserve. At this point we will at the Reserve’s office and then board the canoe. Here our Naturalist Guide provides information about the Reserve, important recommendations and other tips to begin the two hour canoe ride down the Cuyabeno River to Caiman Lodge. During the canoe ride we got a first glimpse of the amazing flora and wildlife found in the jungle. You may also be able to see a variety of monkeys and other jungle animals, depending on the time and weather conditions. We arrived at Caiman Lodge at 3:30 pm. After a siesta we left the camp for a swim in the lagoon and to watch a beautiful sunset while also having the possibility to spot freshwater dolphins. We then returned to the camp for dinner and then we head out for a night walk.
Day 2: Day Jungle Hike in the Primary Forest where the guide explains the ecology of the rainforest, medicinal plants and flora and fauna interactions of the most biodiverse ecosystem on Earth. In the afternoon we went paddling around the flooded Igapo inundated forest around the Laguna Grande and in the evening we head out by motor canoe to look for caimans.
Day 3: We head out downstream to the Puerto Bolivar Siona Community and there we are welcomed by one of the indigenous woman and she took us to the yuca plantation to harvest some yucas and with our help she will show us the preparation of one of their traditions foods, Casave (Yuca flat bread). Immediately after this the guide introduced us to two of the last 4 Shamans of the Siona tribe in Ecuador and there one of them explained their cosmovision directly related to the Ayahuasca brew, he performed an energy cleansing part of the ritual singing their chants which come from a millenary Shaman-apprentice oral tradition
Day 4: Early morning birdwatching (5:30) and sunrise, breakfast at the lodge and at 9:30 return to the Cuyabeno bridge where we had a box lunch and then were picked up by a shuttle bus which took us to Lago Agrio so we can get back to Quito either by bus or airplane.

Ecuador - Mindo Birdwatching Tour
Early in the Morning, we went deeper into the cloud forest to see some of its various bird species. The jungle never stops talking and so it was on us to keep quiet and listen to the sounds of a place that offers such a density of wildlife species.
Hours before sunrise we met our very experienced guide to get even deeper into the magic of the cloud forest and its inhabitants. It was a hilarious experience led by a local who even could copy the tweets of the birds we got to see.
Being in balance with all that is happening in the Ecuadorian forest during the morning hours and to walk silently and discover colourful birds and insects made that day truly special to me. Apart from that Mindo is a cute village where life is held simple and where one could take some hours of rest while waiting for hummingbirds on their search for nectar.
People there are relaxed and friendly and even if you do not speak any Spanish you will not be alone, because all year round there are many foreign travellers or retirees that chose this little paradise their new home.
If you plan to stay longer, I recommend you to take the Tarabita-walk which will lead you to seven waterfalls in a row and a quite scary cable car across the cloudy landscape or to go rafting or for a canopy ride or visit the local shops and stop by at the butterfly farm. For the latter you should ask for when the butterflies are awake to not be disappointed.
In my video you will see some of the most famous animals in the area, I will show you some tricks how to get close-ups of your favourite moments and I also give you some advice on what a guided tour should contain. Additionally, I tell you how to get to Mindo by bus from various destinations.
