Red Townhouse Guest House B&B Eden Valley Penrith MotorBike Friendly
~
Welcome to The Red Townhouse where we offer comfortable, relaxing Bed & Breakfast accommodation.
Penrith is a bustling market town in Cumbria, perfectly located on the edge of the Lake District National Park and a great base for exploring The Lakes.
Don't forget the beautiful Eden Valley and North Pennines area which are also on our doorstep, together with easy access to Hadrian's Wall to the north.
The Scottish Border is only 20 miles north on the M6, making The Red Townhouse an ideal Penrith accommodation stop when travelling to and from Scotland.
We are only about 5 minutes' drive from the M6 motorway (junction 40 or 41) and the main A66 cross Pennine route. The top end of Ullswater (Pooley Bridge) is only 5 miles from Penrith.
The Red Townhouse is a Victorian town house, built with local red sand stone and a red painted front door !
We are located in a quiet part of town designated as a conservation area, yet only 5 minutes' walk from Penrith town centre with it's wide variety of local shops, pubs and restaurants.
We have off road parking and secure bike storage available for our guests.

Eden
In the early 1970’s the border city of Carlisle became an unlikely epicentre for hard traditional climbing and a scene developed that rivaled any in the UK. The atmosphere was competitive, a new E-grading system was born and new milestones were set.
Eden is set around a little known crag close to Carlisle called Armathwaite, it was a meeting place and training venue for the Penrith and Carlisle teams who were looking to make their mark on the British crags.
The film features Pete Whillance, Pete Botteril, Charlie Woodburn and Pete Gunn and is a tribute to a much loved character who changed the face of British climbing, Jeff Lamb.
Appleby Eden Valley Circular Day Hiking Westmoorland Cumbria England UK
Appleby Eden Valley Circular Day Hiking Westmoorland Cumbria England UK
This was the second day hiking trip myself and my partner Anne undertook on our hiking holiday in the Eden Valley, Cumbria, Westmoorland, England, UK in June 2010.
This is a moderate day hike and quite easy, level walking. However, the fact that we had full sun most of the day made it very hot day, and as there was very little breeze, it made the hiking quite tough. It was a great introduction to the Eden Valley and the River Eden area. It was along clear, well marked route, including some country lanes. We hiked through some beautiful riverside scenery and also visited a picturesque waterfall, Rutter Force.

After Brexit What's next
4 years after the Referendum of the United Kingdom's membership of the European Union (Brexit) and resignation of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, 3 1/2 years after the inauguration of Hillary Clinton as President of the United States.
After David Cameron's immediate resignation, nationalists lead by British National Party (BNP) seize their opportunity. Supported by chavs, neighborhood gangs and criminal organizations, as well as ordinary concerned citizens.
Soon schisms emerge, and the BNP breaks into splinter groups Each enclave attempting to seize their opportunity to to take power.
Despite President Clinton's best attempts, she is ineffective at preventing the indiscriminate flood of weapons from the United States, that supplies all sides, further exacerbating conflicts between neighbors, parties, gangs, constabulary, guard, and government .
Resolute in their determination to remove Citizens of Alien Decent (CAD) by any and all means necessary. the chavs and hooligans evolve into Warlords. The result is chaos and carnage on an unprecedented scale.
As the English Civil War (ECW) ensues, Scotland had already taken measures to break away and declare Independence. After the successful extermination of English Loyalists (EL) and CADs during the Glaswegian Pride Massacre just 18 months earlier, the Highland Incursion advanced south until it had secured a new border from Lancaster to Scarborough, rounding up all EL and CADs to an uncertain future. The Forest of Bowland to the North York Moors becomes a DMZ and the Eden Valley is anything but. A new border is fortified with a 500 meter thick wall of razor-wire, lasers and land-mines. Paroled by cheap weaponized quad-copters and manned by inexperienced volunteers, immigrants seeking safety from the ongoing ECW are penned in. Without much in the way of training or resources the conscripted troops of the Highlands are pressed for a solution. Rumors persist that after the Penrith Roundup, ELs and CADs are slaughtered and annihilated.
Again, supplied by US armaments, a bloody conflict is reignited in Northern Ireland as Ireland seizes it. Northern Ireland is helpless to prevent this annexation as England can not come to its aid.
Meanwhile Russia continues to extend its influence in Eastern and Central Europe The EU quickly dissolves as a coalition of France's Euro Laissez-Faire policy, towards Russia's aggression and creates internal conflict among EU members. Despite the obvious reestablishment of old USSR borders, remaining EU members do little, or nothing to help Germany. Conflict between Germany and Russia seem imminent.

We leave to continue the adventure as it gets even more interesting. Once back on the A6, again travel south when shortly afterward you will enter the village of Clifton. The site of the last battle, some say a skirmish rather than a battle, on English soil in 1745 (although this is disputed by other places in England).
The Clifton Moor Skirmish took place on Wednesday 18 December 1745 (29 December) during the Jacobite rising of 1745. It was fought between Jacobite rebels and forces of the British-Hanoverian Government. Since the commander of the government forces, the Duke of Cumberland, was aware of the Jacobite presence in Derby, the Jacobite leader Prince Charles Edward Stuart decided to retreat north back towards Scotland. He began his retreat from Derby on 6 December 1745.
motorbike tours cumbria battle of clifton
This is sometimes claimed to be the last battle on English soil, but there are numerous other claimants, such as the Battle of Graveney Marsh, fought in 1940.
Who would have thought just a few miles south of Penrith lay this village stuffed to the gills with history? Just wait, however, because as we get to the end of stage two, it gets even ‘BETTER’. Leaving Clifton behind we head towards Shap. Everyone who has ever listen to the travel news, or weather forecast during winter will have heard of Shap. It is a high point in reference to the M6, that is just over the hills to the east of the village.
Although just after we cross the M6 bridge we turn right into Lowther estate and head towards one of the most beautiful hidden stretches of water anywhere in Britain.
Haweswater…….
First, we must ride through the Lowther estates and you will see to the left the splendid Lowther Castle. Lowther Castle is a country house in the historic county of Westmorland, which now forms part of the modern county of Cumbria, England. It has belonged to the Lowther family, latterly the Earls of Lonsdale, since the Middle Ages.
We keep going unless of course, you wish to partake in a closer view of the castle or to enjoy the vast grounds of Lowther estates.
On reaching Askham we turn left and head off into absolutely splendid countryside twisting and winding our way towards Haweswater. On reaching Haweswater you have just entered paradise. It is here you must be especially careful that the ‘view’ pixies do not take your eyes hostage, or the imagination fairies do not kidnap your mind!. It is here we end stage 2 with no better place in Britain to relax and enjoy the stunning vista’s that only Haweswater can provide. Haweswater is a reservoir built in the valley of Mardale. The controversial construction of the Haweswater dam was started in 1929, after Parliament passed an Act giving Manchester Corporation permission to build the reservoir to supply water for the urban conurbations of north-west England.
At the time there was much public outcry about the decision as the valley of Mardale was populated by the farming villages of Measand and Mardale Green, and the construction of the reservoir would mean that these villages would be flooded and lost, and the population would have to be moved. In addition, the valley was considered one of the most picturesque in Westmorland, and many people thought it should be left alone.
Hadrians Wall, October 2009
During my time at sea I made a promise that I'd walk Hadrians Wall, and so I did it! It was cold, rainy and windy as Hell but a bloody good time. Was lucky with the weather as it was just before the huge floods that affected Cumbria, as can be seen in the last couple of pictures.

MYSTERIOUS Strange Carvings on The River Eden, Cumbria - Eden Valley
We took the GoPro down to kayak the River Eden in Cumbria and came across this strange carvings in the rock face along the banking...The full carving reads as follows:
OH THE FISHERS CENTLE LIFE
HAPPIEST IS OF ANY
VOID OF PLEASUR FULL OF STRIFE
OTHER JOYS ARE BUT TOYS
AND TO BE LAMENTED
ONLY THIS A PLEASURE IS
TIMBER }{ FISHING
Followed by the Greek Phrase APIδTOS UEV UDIΛIP. Dated 1855. Very interesting! ????
After a bit more investigation we know that the there is an error in the carving itself. It should read Ariston, not APIδTOS. Men Udor, is a line from a Euripides play which is commonly found found on the inside of 19th century bath houses. The final line below is very confused and likely not part of the quote, perhaps the carvers's initials. Very interesting!
