Waterfalls of Edessa in Greece
We are traveling from Thessaloniki to Ohrid in Macedonia. Edessa is just on our way and we could see already huge waterfall from far away. We drove into the city and to famous waterfalls in the city.

Edessa, known as city of waters, is a city in northern Greece and the capital of the Pella regional unit, in the Central Macedonia region of Greece. It was also the capital of the defunct province of the same name.
Edessa holds a special place in the history of the Greek world as, according to some ancient sources, it was here that Caranus established the first capital of ancient Macedon. Later, under the Byzantine Empire, Edessa benefited from its strategic location, controlling the Via Egnatia as it enters the Pindus mountains, and became a center of medieval Greek culture, famed for its strong walls and fortifications.In the modern period, Edessa was one of Greece's industrial centers until the middle of the 20th century, with many textile factories operating in the city and its immediate vicinity. Today however its economy mainly relies on services and tourism. Edessa hosts most of the administrative services of the Pella regional unit, as well as some departments of the Thessaloniki-based University of Macedonia.

The falls are a natural phenomenon that arose after a strong earthquake that struck the surrounding area in the 14th century. Historic springs at the open-air Water Museum
Edessa’s industry was water-powered. Mills of all kinds, looms and six factories operated here in the 19th century, bringing prosperity to the town. The force that drove them all is commemorated in the museum, the city’s most fascinating attraction. Don’t forget to visit the Giannakis watermill with its aquarium and reptile house. It is the first in Greece to have fresh-water fish as well as snakes, turtles, eels, crabs and even baby crocodiles.
A trip to aristocratic Varosi
This is a hillside neighbourhood full of grand old houses in the Macedonian architectural style.14th-century Byzantine churches with interesting frescoes, such as the church of the Dormition of the Virgin and the church of Saints Peter and Paul, put the finishing touches on the special atmosphere.
Katarraktakia: small waterfalls and a big party
The neighbourhood with all the little waterfalls is in the heart of the city. Young people gather here to have fun and the noise they make gives the falling water a run for its money. Mini bridges amongst a riot of green foliage, cafes and tavernas near the river create a delightful setting in northern Macedonia. The locals claim that there are 71 bridges of all sizes in Edessa. You’ll need a sturdy pair of walking boots to check if they’ve got their sums right!

Longos archaeological site

Edessa (grčki: Έδεσσα) ili Voden (makedonski, bugarski, srpski: Воден) je glavni grad Prefekture Pela na severozapadu Periferije Središnje Makedonije u Grčkoj.
To je grad čija prošlost seže u vreme antike, danas je trgovački i administrativni centar kraj bogat jezerima,vodopadima i brojnim vodotocima.
Antičko grčko ime grada Edesa vezuje se uz Seleuka Nikatora, makedonskog vojskovođu Aleksandra Velikog koji je novoosnovani grad u severnoj Mesopotamiji nazvao - Edesa. Po teoriji današnjih lingvista, to ime verovatno potiče od frigijske reči bedu (voda).Bedu (Βέδυ) se lingvistički povezuju sa grčkim rečima hydor (ύδωρ), bidra (βίδρα), koje sve znače voda, ili idros (ίδρως) i idrosa (ίδρωσα) koje znače slatko, slatka. Edessa je zaista grad voda, zbog brojnih izvora i vodopada kojih ima i po centru mesta.Najstarije slovensko (makedonsko i bugarsko) ime mesta bilo je Vodeno (mesto na vodi), koje je preraslo u današnje ime Voden. Turci su ovo mesto zvali Vodina, a Vlasi su ovaj grad nazivali Edesa , Vudena ili Vodina. Engleski prevod imena je Edessa.

Οι καταρράκτες της Έδεσσας | Waterfalls Edessa
Η Έδεσσα δεν θα μπορούσε να λέγεται πόλη των νερών χωρίς τους περίφημους Καταρράκτες τους μεγαλύτερους σε όλα τα Βαλκάνια. Οι καταρράκτες Έδεσσας βρίσκονται στην άκρη βράχου σε ένα μοναδικό γεωπάρκο σμιλεμένο από το νερό που λέγεται ‘φρύδι της πόλης’.
Συνολικά υπάρχουν επτά καταρράκτες, από τους οποίους σήμερα είναι ορατοί μόνο οι τέσσερις.
Ο μεγάλος καταρράκτης ονομάστηκε Κάρανος προς τιμήν του γενάρχη της βασιλικής οικογένειας των Τημενιδών που πρώτοι εποίκησαν τις Αιγές. Το νερό του ποταμού Εδεσσαίου, αφού πρώτα διασχίσει την πόλη, πέφτει από ύψος 70 μ. με απίστευτη ορμή, εκκωφαντικό θόρυβο και άγρια ομορφιά.
Κάτω από τον Κάρανο υπάρχουν ένα μικρό σπήλαιο με σταλακτίτες, που παρουσιάζει ιδιαίτερο γεωλογικό ενδιαφέρον και το εκκλησάκι της Ανάληψης.
Πολύ κοντά και ο Διπλός ή Διχαλωτός καταρράκτης, αφού αρχικά ξεθυμάνει σε βράχους και πλατανόριζες που βρίσκει μπροστά του, ανοίγει στα δύο και αφρισμένος καταλήγει στη μικρή τεχνητή λίμνη της ΔΕΗ.
Το Γεωπάρκο των Καταρρακτών εκτείνεται σε μια περιοχή πάνω από 100.000τμ και σε μία διαδρομή πάνω στο βράχο για 1,1χλμ.

Η Έδεσσα (παλαιότερα ονομάζονταν παράλληλα και Βοδενά ή Πόλη των Νερών), είναι πόλη και πρωτεύουσα του Νομού Πέλλας, ανήκει στην Περιφέρεια Κεντρικής Μακεδονίας και είναι επίσης πρωτεύουσα του διευρυμένου Καλλικρατικού Δήμου Έδεσσας. Η πόλη είναι φημισμένη για τους καταρράκτες της, και βρίσκεται πάνω στην αρχαία Εγνατία Οδό. Ιδρύθηκε το 813 π.Χ. από τον πρώτο Μακεδόνα Βασιλειά, τον Ηρακλείδη Κάρανο και ήταν η πρώτη πρωτεύουσα του Μακεδονικού Βασιλείου.[1]
Γνώρισε πλούσιο βιομηχανικό παρελθόν κατά την διάρκεια του μεσοπολέμου. Ο πληθυσμός της πόλης της Έδεσσας είναι 18.229, ενώ αυτός του διευρυμένου Δήμου Έδεσσας ανέρχεται στους 28.814 κατοίκους (απογραφή 2011). Επίσης μέχρι την ανακάλυψη των Βασιλικών Τάφων της Βεργίνας στην Ημαθία, από τον Μανώλη Ανδρόνικο πολλοί ακόμα πιστεύουν ότι οι Αρχαίες Αιγές βρίσκονται στο Αρχαιολογικό χώρο της πόλης, βάσει απόψεων αρχαιολόγων.
Η Έδεσσα απέχει 95 χλμ. από τη Θεσσαλονίκη, και 25 χλμ. από την Αριδαία.
Edessa (Ancient Greek: Ἔδεσσα; Turkish: Şanlıurfa; Arabic: الرها; Kurdish: Riha) was a city in Upper Mesopotamia, founded on an earlier site by Seleucus I Nicator ca. 302 BC. It was also known as Antiochia on the Callirhoe from the 2nd century BC. It was the capital of the semi-independent kingdom of Osroene from c. 132 BC and fell under direct Roman rule in ca. 242. It became an important early centre of Syriac Christianity. It fell to the Muslim conquest in 639, was briefly re-taken by Byzantium in 1031, and became the center of the Crusader state of the County of Edessa during 1098–1144. It fell to the Turkic Zengid dynasty in 1144 and was eventually absorbed by the Ottoman Empire in 1517. The modern name of the city is Urfa, in the Şanlıurfa Province of Turkey's Southeast Anatolia Region.
