【EDGE OF THE WORLD】TASMANIA (Gardiner Point, Arthur River)
Gardiners Point, south of Arthur River has been crowned the Edge of the World.
The sea west of Tasmania is the longest uninterrupted expanse of ocean on the globe. From Argentina the currents sweep unimpeded more than halfway around the planet until they hit this point.
Here, you can view a plaque of the words by Brian Inder (tourism pioneer):
I cast my pebble onto the shore of Eternity.
To be washed by the Ocean of time.
It has shape, form, and substance.
It is me.
One day I will be no more.
But my pebble will remain here.
On the shore of eternity.
Mute witness from the aeons.
That today I came and stood.
At the edge of the world.

At the mercy of the roaring forties winds is this outpost facing an immense stretch of ocean - next stop South America. This was taken on our second visit as the first time the level of wind and rain was truly edge of the world stuff. The mega-driftwood adds to the atmosphere.

Awesome Sunset Edge of the World Arthur River Tasmania
What a rare and amazing sunset! This is world heritage territory: the Edge of the World on Tasmania’s wild and rugged west coast. Take time to enjoy the combat of a rising tide against the relentless outward surge of the famous Arthur River. White capped waves are stained brown from tannin laden waters and splashed golden from the lowering sun. Mighty tree trunks, borne from the wilderness of the river’s upper reaches, lay about the shores as so many match sticks – testament to the savagery of the Great Southern Ocean.
Regarded the cleanest air on earth, the prevailing westerly winds are the infamous Roaring 40s, used by sailing ships in ages past to speed their passage to Asia and the great southern continent of Australia. There is no land mass between Tasmania’s west coast and South America, over 16,000km (10,000 miles) away. Air has to cover three great oceans before arriving here: the South Atlantic, The Indian and the Great Southern.
This is my first serious drone flight, and I was quite nervous about flying it so far from shore. I used a DJI Mavic 2 Zoom. Please note, these are the real colours. I have not edited or corrected any of this footage. It is 1080P, 30fps, straight off the Mavic with (from memory) a 16 neutral density filter. The drone worked flawlessly.
I was blown away by the result. I hope you are too.
Music is “Fading” (how appropriate for a sunset) by Sappheiros. Thank you Sappheiros for such a hauntingly beautiful accompaniment to this visual feast.

TASMANIA - A JOURNEY TO THE EDGE OF THE WORLD
June 2018, we'd decided to took on a flight from Melbourne to this hidden gem at the South and had a great 5 days self drive road trip. This small island is indeed enriched with beautiful landscapes, amazing wilderness reserve, dramatic coastlines, daunting history and so much more. Definitely a gem worth discovering at the southern part of the world.
