Analyst on suicides linked to US school shooting
(26 Mar 2019) The community of Parkland in Florida is focusing attention on its suicide prevention programmes after two survivors of the Florida high school massacre killed themselves in a week.
A graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, who was close friends with a victim, recently killed herself after her family said she suffered from survivor's guilt. A second student apparently killed himself this past weekend.
The February 14, 2018, shooting at the 3,200-student school killed 14 students and three staff members and wounded 17 others.
Some students have begun counting the two suicides among the victims of the shooting.
Also on Monday, police in Connecticut said the father of a first-grader, who was among the 20 children slain at the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, was found dead in an apparent suicide.
Newtown police say the body of 49-year-old Jeremy Richman was found inside Edmond Town Hall, where he had an office. Richman was the father of first-grader Avielle Richman. He and his wife had created The Avielle Foundation, a group dedicating to preventing violence by seeking a better understanding of brain health.
Nikki Kontz, the board president of the Arizona Suicide Prevention Coalition, said parents are reminded of the death of their child each time another shooting occurs and it can bring back a strong sense of the grief they felt on that day.
