Eel Pie Island | London
The pies are a little thin on the ground, but it is a real island. The little Twickenham mudflat has 26 artists’ studios on it, and can only be reached by a cute footbridge that arches over the Thames. You’ll find a jarring ‘private property’ sign when you reach the other side but, twice a year, the islanders invite the public to come and nose around for its Open Studios event.
It was once a bubbling cauldron of British rock ’n’ roll. There was a five-month period in 1963 where you could see the Rolling Stones play there every Wednesday. The Who, Pink Floyd and Screaming Lord Sutch all did gigs at the Eel Pie Island Hotel, a rickety nineteenth-century ballroom that was lost to a fire in 1971. It was a place for counter-culturalists, poets and a pretty sizeable hippie commune because… well, it was the ’60s.
Today Eel Pie’s community is made up of painters, potters and sculptors beavering away in studios built around an old boatyard. But it’s not some bougie paradise, it’s still a strange, overgrown hamlet – the public path to the studios is scattered with undressed mannequin torsos, thick curls of boating rope, rusty hulls and plants wearing top hats.

This is a film I just rediscovered when I converted some old VHS tapes to MP4. It's from 1993 and shows the Thames from the Embankment, the footbridge and York House Gardens.

An Oral History of Eel Pie Island
Eel Pie Island is the largest island in the London section of the Thames and until 1957 it could be reached only by boat. Originally called Paryshe Aite, some historians argue that it was once the site of a monastery and there are rumours that Henry VIII used it as a courting ground. In the 17th century it was used by day trippers and became well known for the eel pies made from locally caught eels.
In 1860 Twickenham Rowing club was established and runs to this day, one of the largest and oldest rowing clubs in London. From the early 20th century ramshackle huts and yards were built on the island and many of these structures exist today as do two of the boatyards built to construct and repair working boats on the Thames. The boatyards are also home to workshops for artists and craftspeople and moorings for houseboats.
From the 1920s the Eel Pie Island Hotel hosted ballroom dances and from the 1950s and 60s a bohemian crowd began to move to the island and it became a venue for jazz and rock musicians including the Rolling Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd - some say that the island is where the 1960s began in the UK. The Eel Pie Island Hotel that hosted many gigs became a hippy commune after concerts stopped in 1967 and it then burned down in 1971.
This little hidden part of London never lost its allure to artists and musicians who continued to move in during the 1970s, many of whom remain to this day and comprise a number of its residents. Today there are 50 houses and 120 residents.

Eel Pie Island Open Day
Eel Pie island is an amazingly magical community where in amongst the boats, the winches and the cranes you can find a number of artists studios as well as a other unusual and bohemian folk. The Open Day is perfect for exploring this little private haven. Cross the footbridge in to a new realm, where the unusual is the norm. A special community just 20 minutes by fast train from Twickenham to Central London. If you missed last weekends Open Day there is another open weekend on the 19th/20th June. Bring your cheque book - there are some superb pieces of art to buy.

Old Blue Moses at the famous Eel Pie Club where many bands started in the 60's - THe Who, Eric clapton with John Mayall's Bluebreakers, The Yardbirds, (2 old members were in the audience we were told...), The Downliners Sect, Rod Stewart, Long John Baldry, Ronnie Wood and his brother Art wood to name a few. The Rolling Stones, the Who, David Bowie even Pink Floyd played at Eel Pie Island club before this was burn down. When i came down south in the early seventies the first place my brother Gordon took me to was Eel Pie .... even then it still had a 'vibe' to it all ... real shame it is gone... Later the Eel Pie club and the gigs at Radnor Gardens just down the river a bit tried to fill the void that was left...
