⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Walking Taipei, Taiwan : Neihu District (Costco, Neihu Sports Park) (December 16, 2019)
A walk in the Neihu District of Taipei, Taiwan. I get a drink at a local 7-11, visit the Costco Wholesale, and make my way to Neihu Sports Park.
From Wikipedia:
Neihu District is a district of Taipei City, Taiwan. Neihu means inner lake. The older name originates from the Ketagalan word Tayour (transliterated by the Dutch as Cattajo), meaning woman's head ornament.
Many mountainous roads and paths, which are ideal for hiking, connect Neihu with the neighboring Shilin District and Yangmingshan National Park. The Tri-Service General Hospital, which is a teaching hospital of the National Defense Medical Center, is also in Neihu. The Wuchih Mountain Military Cemetery borders Neihu.

Festival at Taipei Main Station offers unique tours to indigenous communities
The Indigenous Tourism Festival opened today at Taipei Main Station. From now till Sunday, it offers a showcase of arts and crafts, delicacies, and stage performances from 18 indigenous communities in Taiwan. Also on offer are a series of exciting tours for those who want to learn more about these communities and their cultures. Visitors can book a tour and go on a one-day hunting adventure, learn the arts of survival from the Amis people, and try their hand at cooking a local dish.Hualien’s Tabalong performance troupe takes to the stage, kicking off the 2019 Taiwan Indigenous Tourism Festival. Traditional indigenous delicacies are also available, including glutinous rice snacks and Ma’ao eggs from Miaoli’s Nanzhuang community.Chang Feng-chuTri-Mountain National Scenic Area officialIt is common in plains communities to eat tea eggs, but these Ma’ao eggs are very unique. We use a type of spice called “mountain pepper,” which yields a unique fragrance.Rock paintings and hand-crafted jewelry from Dili Village in Nantou’s Sinyi Township are also on display, giving visitors a glimpse into indigenous artworks. RitaCraftswomanWhen we are creating the crafts, we use black, white and red as the primary colors to represent the Bunun people. Chou Yung-huiTourism Bureau director-generalI hope everyone can come out and experience the uniqueness of the indigenous communities. Also, we know that Lanyu is not a designated national scenic area, but we have issued a special invitation to Lanyu’s Tao people to come take part in the festival. The Indigenous Tourism Festival runs from today to Sunday at Taipei Main Station. New Zealand’s Maori people are joining the festival this year, highlighting the dynamic diversity of the Austronesian peoples.

Zhuilu Old Trail (追鹿古道) | Most Dangerous Cliff in Taiwan
Zhuilu Old Trail (追鹿古道) | Most Dangerous Cliff in Taiwan
A Walk on the edge of Insanity!
Zhuilu Old Trail(錐麓古道) is the most famous one due to the magnificent scenery. Though the beautiful view does attract people, it’s not an easy challenge if you want to visit Zhuilu Old Trail. The narrow path, physical energy required and park entry permit are the reasons that stop people for coming.
The Zhuilu Old Road, the remains of the Old Cross-Hehuan Mountain Road, is the only Culture/historic Area in Taroko National Park.
Currently, the east 3.1 km of the trail is open to hikers. (the rest of trail remains closed due to the rockfalls damages.) Starting from Zhuilu Suspension Bridge, the trail leads to the Cliff Outpost, where hikers must doubleback to the trail entrance in order to exit. Due to the unique characteristics of the Zhuilu Old Road, entrance is limited per day to 96 persons on weekdays and 156 persons on weekends and holidays. Visitors are required to apply for a park entry permit. If a typhoon or other natural disaster occurs, the trail will be closed and permits for the closed period will be automatically invalidated. Please apply for a new permit once the trail is reopened.
Zhuilu Old Road is part of the Old Cross-Hehuan Mountain Road, an important connection between Truku villages in the early days. Originally the trail was only 30 cm wide, barely enough for two feet side by side. In 1917, the Japanese conscripted local indigenous men and expanded the trail width to 1.5 m. Zhuilu was then used for transportation as well as the movement of artillery. Hanging only by a rope around their waist, the local indigenous men used dynamite on the cliff walls to clear the rock for tunnels, extremely difficult and dangerous work.
It’s called “Zhuilu Cliff” and is also known as “The Sky Trail of Taiwan”.
Safety Information:
This trail is rugged along much of its length and the cliff section is very narrow. Do not attempt it if lacking fitness, scared of heights or suffering from heart disease.
The weather in the mountains is very changeable. In the afternoon, wind and fog are common. Please be careful and stay warm.
Zhuilu Cliff Section is around 500 meters long (2.6K-3.1K). When crossing the cliff: (1)Do not use your cellphone, run, jump, or play, and do not get too close to the edge. (2)Walk as close to the inside edge of the trail as you can and grip the rope at all times; when passing others coming the other way, be careful, wait in a spacious place and give way. (3)When taking pictures, please be careful.
How To Get There?
▸Bus: Take a Hualien Bus(No. 1133A/302) bound for Tianxiang, Luoshao, or Lishan, and alight at Swallow Grotto (Yanzikou).
▸Drive: Head west on the Central Cross-Island Highway. The Swallow Grotto is approx. 500 m after exiting from the Xipan Tunnel.

Taiwan Manyueyuan Waterfall Hike
Just outside Sanxia (Taipei County) there is a great place to go for a hike and see a few awesome waterfalls.
See more of our Taiwan Adventures at
Hehuan Mountains (from Hehuan East Peak) 20120715
Hehuanshan (Mt. Hehuan) is situated in the area neighboring the Hualien and Nantou Counties. It is the watershed for several major rivers in Taiwan including Dajia, Zhoshui, and Liwu Rivers. The steep 457-hectare area is situated between 2300 and 3400 meters above sea level, at the highest elevation of any of the National Taiwan Forest Recreation Areas. At a mean annual temperature of only 6ºC, Hehuanshan has cool summers and cold winters. It is the best place to enjoy mountain flowers, winter whites, and the mountain terrain landscape.
The nearby alpines of Hehuan Main Peak, East Peak, North Peak, West Peak, Shimen Mountain, Shimen North Peak, and Hehuanjian Moutain are all well-known. Since they are each higher than 3,000 meters in elevation, these mountains are challenging to climb. Subsequently, they are the considered some of the best mountains for climbing, each earning designations among the Top Hundred Peaks. To the distance, the landscape consists of Qilailienfeng, Nanhutaishan and Chungyanjian Mountains of the Central Mountain range. This magnificent mountain landscape is very endearing. Due to low temperatures in winter, (in January, the coldest month, the mean average temperature is -1.2ºC), it snows each time that a cold front arrives. Snow-covered firs and icicles make this area the best place for enjoying the snow. Since the area is situated at a high elevation seemingly very close to the clouds, visitors can look up to observe the magnificent sunrise, sea of clouds, and sunset glow, all of which are unique views in Taiwan. On clear autumn days, stratus, cirrus and cumulus clouds float amongst each other, as if they are intermixing and mingling. Since this area is dark with minimal light, it has become the best mountain location for watching the stars in Taiwan.

COAST TO COAST - TAIWAN ON FOOT #19
I'm Steve, I'm travelling in Taiwan on foot.
Kaohsiung to Donggang (32 Km)
Donggang to Fangshan (35 Km)
Fangshan to Daren (38Km)
Three walking days. Not much to mention about the first two days. People have been nice as usual but not much to see. My feet actually started to be really painful so I had to stop a couple of nights in the same place to recover.
The third day was an exiting one. Finally the time to say goodbye to the west coast and welcome to the easy one has arrived.
I crossed the south part of Taiwan through the road number nine, skipping Kenting. The journey from east to west was actually much easier than I was expecting. Few travellers who did it on foot or on bike before me said it was going to be though crossing the mountains (463m elevation), but I guess the didn’t experienced the road from Taichung to Sun Moon Lake ( over 800m elevation). So for me was a easy one.
The only thing I noticed while descending the mountains is that my right leg started to be painful. It could sounds easier descending but it’s actually not. The 40kg trailer was pushing me so I had to use different muscles to “brake” the thing. This inconvenient will become a big problem forcing me to make important changes on my trip.

Small Town Travels Jiji
Small Town Travels-Jiji
Michella Jade Weng, Presenter:
Hi, I'm Michella! And this is my friend...
Michael Turton, American Expat:
Michael from Chang Gung University in Linkou, Taiwan. Today we're in beautiful Jiji, a small town top ten destination in Nantou, Taiwan.
A place where Chinese and indigenous Taiwanese people conducted trade with each other in the 18th century, Jiji became a booming town after railroads and a train station was constructed during the Japanese occupation. These days it's a quiet little area great for a cycling tour.
Michella Jade Weng, Presenter:
Here comes the train!
From the train station to the edge of the green tunnel, it's about a 7km ride and there are several attractions along the way. This is a military history park with real (but retired) tanks and fighter jets from the US. And this is a traditional Chinese wood-fired snake kiln built more than half a century ago, and it's still in operation.
And if you like bananas, you'll love what the locals call mountain bananas here.
Mountain bananas are sweeter. Because they're grown in the mountains and there's less water in the soil here, they grow slower.
Of course you can eat it raw, but there's nothing special about that, so it's also eaten cooked here.
Michael Turton, American Expat:
You've probably heard of fried bananas. But what about fried banana peel? Or banana fried rice?
Michael Turton, American Expat:
The bananas are very chewy and sweet, like little bombs of sweetness, boom! going off in your mouth.
Michael Turton, American Expat:
Jiji's wonderful. Great energy, yet really relaxed. Nantou - the mountains are beautiful, the people are really friendly. And the fruit - excellent. The bananas we had yesterday were very special. And if you look here, how often can you find such a long, beautiful green tunnel in Taiwan? The government's obviously done a great job in taking care of this. I've been up here several times by myself on my bike just because I like it so much coming through this area.
