October 21, 1967: Egyptian naval forces sink the Israeli destroyer INS Eilat, killing forty-seven.

Soviet-made P-15 missiles were used by Egypt against Israel in October 1967, when Egyptian Komar-class fast-attack craft sank the Israeli destroyer INS Eilat, scoring at least three direct hits. This was a milestone of modern naval warfare; for the first time anti-ship missiles displayed their potential, sinking the destroyer 17 km from Port Said.

Many travelers venture to Israel just to enjoy the beautiful and magical Eilat beaches. Visitors are quickly drawn to the 10 km long shoreline surrounding the Red Sea. The water is clean, clear and always refreshing. Because temperatures outside never usually drop below 68 degrees (20 Celsius) and it only rains about 12 days a year, Eilat is a perfect resort town.

Israel's Yasam Eilat Security Forces Unit
STRICTLY SECURITY | Israel's Yasam Eilat unit is supposed to be prepared for any situation at any time. The new unit is intended to be able to defend the country's resort city of Eilat in the event of an attack from the Red Sea and Egyptian border. Our Diana Skaya and Matthias Inbar have the story.
Story:
Able to act anytime, anywhere, in any situation — welcome to the special intervention unit of the Israeli police, the Yasam Eilat — a new unit established six months ago to respond to threats to Israel's Red Sea resort.
‘Our goal is to provide the quickest, most appropriate response according to the forces involved,’ says the unit’s commander Ahiad Afengar. In our different units, we already have 19 fighters who are experienced and we recruited the best we wanted from all over Israel.’
And one of them, Shahar Zamor, was one of the first victims of the recent wave of stabbings. In October 2015, he was very seriously injured in an attack at the Damascus gate in Jerusalem. He needed to be aggressive to join this elite unit.
He agrees to meet us, coincidently, in front of the Ink Flag. The symbol of the capture of Eilat from the Jordanians in 1949.
‘I feel like I am continuing their work; continuing to secure the southern border,’ Zamor says. ‘I had to redo all the tests in order to get in the Yasam unit — a physical exam, mainly.’ Zamor adds, ‘Constantly wearing a bulletproof vest and a helmet. To be sure that when the time comes, the pain doesn't hinder me.’
‘My inner voice tells me ‘what's the point? You got out, everything is fine,’ But my other voice, more powerful, tells me, ‘nothing will break you’.’
These fighters can be found in front of a run-down building that adjoins Eilat's port.
Shahar Zamor - Yasam Eilat Police Unit:
‘It's part of my recovery. That's my medicine. I couldn't stay home and rehash the incident — I can't stop thinking about it,’ Zamor explains. ‘But the best cure is going back to the field as a fighter. I had difficult moments where for six months I wasn't able to wear a bullet-proof vest, I couldn't even carry an M16 rifle.’
The group faces many dangers, often the unknown. Training helps to prepare these men as best as it can, but not every factor can always be accounted for.
‘As you have seen during the training. One of our fighters was killed. But what I mean is that we know what the risk is. But I'm here to prevent a mass killing,’ Afengar explains. ‘If the terrorist managed to kill one or two of our fighters, but we eliminated him, we succeeded in our mission. If he managed to get around us, he could have killed dozens or even hundreds of civilians in the city.’
The aim of the Yasam is to respond to an incident as quickly as possible, as was the case last 30th of November, when a Jordanian worker attacked Israeli officers with a hammer blow.
‘These men are highly professional, and prepared for contact with terrorists; a terror on our doorstep. They can intervene at any given time, and those who are able to respond to these threats are these men from Yasam Eilat,’ Head of security at Eilat’s port Yemini Canaan says. ‘The clash with the terrorists can only be concluded with the success of our forces.’
